I was lucky enough to be in the US Navy in the 90's and I got stationed in Japan for a few months. That's where I discovered two things: the Japanese cassette market and CD rentals. I loved experimenting with the different manufacturer's tapes. I must have tried a tape from almost every manufacturer. That's where I first experienced the first-gen CDing 2's. They were just as meh there as they were elsewhere. That being said, the Japanese TDKs I used seem to have a lot less quality control problems than the American ones did. I don't think I ever had the problems with railroading that the American ones do.
The one tape I really wish I still had was Maxell's Metal Vertex. I only bought one. Incredible sounding tape, horrible labeling system.
BTW, Axia is indeed Fuji. Fuji's own name isn't used as much in Japan. A lot of the Axia tapes have Fuji contemporaries elsewhere. And they were all really good tapes.
That Keep, though, never heard of that one.
That Axia is a very nice cassette. I've never seen one of those before. I love the GIG and the CDing2 was great with the dolphins on. You have lovely cassettes.
The TDK is pretty, the Sony is very pretty, the Axia is beautiful. And they all sound great!
I love those Axia tapes. I own only 6 or 7 of them still sealed. Omg that Sony is pretty 😍
I do love seeing these mysterious cassettes unwrapped and tested. It's a nice reveal. But, I get just as excited at that one moment in the video when we know we're about to see which deck you're going to fire up today.
"Keep" is an unlucky name for a nice cassette. The ONLY minidisc I ever lost was full of cherished, irreplaceable recordings.. labeled "DO NOT LOSE!"
@Fur Q 16 years now that I've been drilling myself with that exact question 🤦
Keep CDX is made by GoldStar Korea.
When Taiyo Yuden stopped making cassettes, their hubs appeared in GoldStar and General Magnetics Singapore cassettes. Shell That´s RX is different from this Keep.
It is really not uncommon for cassettes from China and Korea to appear in the Japanese market.
I have exactly the same version of Keep CDX as in your video, and then I have another Keep, but a different model. This is made in SKC.
Great video 👍. I just came from a thrift store buying a 6 pack of unopened Maxell UR type 1 for $1.00. They record pretty good.
Axia tape looks the business!! Yet again another great in depth analysis of audio cassette tapes you don't usually see!! Great video Tony!! 👍
Tony, a tip for future Japanese market tapes is to use the google Translate app on your phone, point it t text and it will give a live translation. Results vary with technical data, bu the paragraphs of info should translate well enough.
Yes, I know this video is 2 years old and the follow up video is 1 year old, but I'm expecting a part 3, 4, 5 aaaand 6! haha
Beautiful vídeo Tony!!!Thanks!!All of them performed very well, which makes difficult to choose one cassette in particular better than the other .What it's clear to me after seeing your vídeo is that Japanese market has very high ,if not, the highest standards. Thanks again Tony!Regards!Rafael
The “Keep” cassettes were perhaps made by Goldstar. The tape leader is similar to Goldstar tapes. Gold star also had the same hubs as That’s tapes in some of their cassettes. The Keep tape in the video looks the early 90s Goldstar DJ including its shell.
Possibly. Never had a Goldstar with That's hubs, but yeah, the leader could be.
Here is one images.45spaces.com/f/aud/goldstar-type-i-5-aud.jpg
Sure was good to see a video from you again Tony. Always good to see something new and fun. We’re having a bit of a bad surge of Covid over here in the Colonies. You be safe and take care mate!
Love the Axia Tony. That's one sexy shell.
They all performed top notch there. Amazing tapes
Great video, Tony! I will wait your videos about japanese tapes!
Thank You! I Was Looking For Japanese Blank Cassettes. Sony Gig Blank Cassettes.
That Axia shell looks great and you can't fault the performance! Same thing with the Keep. Certainly performs like That's.
That AXIA looks and sounds great. It seemed to get better the more you cranked it up. Can't wait for the Denon "Spanking New", makes me wonder what the Denon marketing executives got up to at the weekends!!
Cool. You picked exactly the 4 that I wanted to see first. I hate those slim tape cases though!
Very interesting. Even those AXIA tapes are the same as the FUJI ones. All made by that company.
Literally said "oooh, big hubs" in unison with you hahaha
All I know of Axia is they are responsible for the Hello Kitty themed cassettes and minidiscs.
TDK did Hello Kitty to !
i really want those, the blue ones fine for me
Great video again, and SURELY not the first comment!!! Worth it for those Axia GIANT HUBS alone!
At least you didn't just say "First!" 😁
I found a Hungarian site that deals with cassettes and it goes into detail about individual tapes, and they had a section on Keep cassettes. According to them, Keep is made by LG/Goldstar, and Keep seems to be its own company.
The site is ez647.sk/cc/audio.html.
I think the Axia was made by Fuji because there's Fuji's Logo the wrapper
Axia = Fuji and Fuji = Axia
lol i have more than a dozen AXIA tapes i that i bought at japan surplus stores in the philippines. thanks tony
Those Axia cassettes are great!
You got a great collection of JDM tapes!
I did. They were a proper suprise.
Cassette Comeback
Right on! If you ever run into the Axia BE, your Dragon will love it!
See you on Tapeheads!
clamsterdamm
Too bad, Axia never made it to the US market, because other brands like TDK, Maxell, Memorex, Sony, Fuji and a few others made blank cassettes.
@@Musicradio77Network Axia =Fuji so its in the States ;-)
hi tony.
i take it you like bricktop lol.....
they are all very nice looking and great performing cassettes and tbh like you the tdk cding 2supprised the heck out of me as i have a load of these dahm things as i brought a couple of 10 packs back in the 90's and like you i have never got a decent recording from one they are to me truelly crap the level difference is a joke. but i have brought another nip to try on the recently acquired 3 head deck but i dont hold out on anything for it to perform. by the way those ltd ed cassettes you done for candy apple blue look fantastic
can't wait for that sexy looking 90's denon goodness
In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary, come again? 😁
@@CassetteComeback you can bet your balls to a barn door lol
panasonic PX1はTDK Super CDing IのOEMです。
Thanks
I'm sure someone else has mentioned this, but you have likely exposed more music from the UA-cam royalty free library than any other single channel probably has. The AXIA was pretty slick all around. One of my favorite Fuji cassettes is a DR-1 that was sold here in the States in the mainly Black and "Granite" toned wrapper with Green and Blue accents that indicate a Japanese only origin. The cassette shells have understated diagonal molded lines in the plastic and matching green DR-1 90 logo. There are Korean made versions in the same wrapper that have a plainer shell. The Japan made ones seem to usually have hubs with "square" spokes that don't go all the way through. The Korean versions seem to have plain hubs. I think the tape is the same in both though.
Лайк за отличное видео!
A long time ago I got a That's FX 60 and it had recorded flawlessly from the beginning to the end. Now, when I try to record, about half of side B has terrible dropouts on it! Other parts of tape are fine. Tape isn't overdriven, dropouts stay the same even though level is decreased.
What can I do?
Deck used: Aiwa F660
I've found That's cassettes to be fragile. Sounds like this one has succumbed too.
@@CassetteComeback Yeah... It's a shame: That cassette sounded so amazing with my Aiwa! It made the sound somehow more rich and open
What about That's (Taiyo Yuden)?
However amazing video... Nostalgia of high end 80/90s decks!
I've done an early video with That's in.
Hi ,I'm a big fan of yours always watching your fantastic vids ,,wonder if you can give me any tips on head cleaning ,,i do a lot of mix tape recording on Maxwell urs,,,but noticed now the sounds not as clear ,,so I purchased a trackmate audio cleaner ,,are these any good ??or would you recommend cleaning the heads manually?? Be great if you could point your expertise my way ,,thanks
100% Isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds for head cleaning and capstans. Servisol foam cleaner and cotton wool buds for the pinch rollers is what I use.
Thanks very much indeed 👍
Aye, who's stomping on my ground :P lol.
Looking forward to seeing who you have to say about these. Right, going to get my White Russian and sit back and enjoy this one.
White Russian? Just like the Big Lewbowski :-D
@@CassetteComeback oh yes! Love a white Russian with cream.
Well, just saw the vid. Happy that you liked the Axia PS1. They're Awesome tapes. Got a few of those.
Also, thanks for the shout outs! 👍 Better get on with those Axia specials. Just waiting for a few more Axia tapes to arrive.
I think it would be safe to say that Japanese market cassettes are the "designer cassettes" of the format? Just look at all that colorful printing... makes most US market Memorex bland looking lol.
That and I find it amusing that some brands like Maxell had certain hub designs and shells that were only for the Japanese/ Asian markets. So they had a full set of molds and machinery set aside for one market set of their tape lineups. I'm no financial expert- but that sounds like a lot of money set aside for a market that can't be nearly as big or competitive than the rest of the world.
Japan has always treated themselves better. Look how many great Japanese products never made it out of Japan. We just got the common stuff with the decent profit margins...
Sony shell is super cool
Wow, that Axia sounds superb.
A little off topic- well a lot- but when a commercial tape has the Dolby symbol, should I assume this is Dolby B?
Yeah
I have one question for you do is good Technics casette deck RS - 631. MY OLD KASETTE basf CHROME 90 WHEN I TRY RECORDED SOME FROM MY GRAMOFONE LOOSES LEFT CHANEL .IN RWEPRODUCTION IS GOOD , WHEN I PLAY RECORDED SONG LEFT CHANEL IS A BAD,.MAYBE DECK IS NOT GOOD .KASSETTE STAYS 20 YEARS WANISHED .MAYBE CASETTES NOT GOOD.
なかなか おもしろいですね。 これらのカセットテープは、オークションで入手ですか? It's quite interesting. ━ Do you get these cassette tapes at the auction?
No. They were sent to my by a viewer.
Cassette Comeback Thank you reply to my question Recently I also remembered the cassette deck. Therefore, I bought a cassette deck and tape at the auction. MA and AD of TDKs
Do we love proper Fuji/Axias? Of course we do... Got a couple of hundred Fujis here!
Question, what tapes is techmoan using in his videos....they look nice.
I do wonder if Tony watches Techmoan, :-)
Do you mean the ones with the open reel type spools? I think Techmoan has mentioned in one of his videos, but I can’t remember. However TEAC is the the most famous brand for making these kind of cassettes.
Yeah I watch techmoan. I'm disappointed he uses those cassettes. They're what cassette poseurs and flippers use in their decks. A 1985 Maxell UDI would look better 😁
@@goodull argos dis some like that about 30 years ago.....yes I am that old.
ROCK ON TONY!!
Really love the look and performance of the Axia.
It seems that Japan has the good stuff. I didn't hear any distortion on my end from any of those cassettes.
They always keep the best stuff to themselves. Watches, tech, cassettes...
@@CassetteComeback I agree.
JDM cassettes for your JDM car
Dragon andZX-9!!!
Tony how can I buy tape recorder from you what I have to do thank you
Now that you have better monetization scheme in place, any chance of using real music? You get more views and more support from viewers than youtube adsharing could ever possibly give you.
No. This is the last video with any mention of the patreon. Less than 0.1% of subscribers appreciate the videos enough to support them monetarily, so it's been closed down and everyone refunded.
Are these new products ?
Did Kodak ever make cassettes or tape
I have som Kodak VHS cassettes and I saw some BETAMAX ones.
All the best.
Kodak was big in reel-to-reel tape, but stopped around 1970. There are also some Kodak cassettes from the very early days, partly made by Kodak themselves in France, partly re-labelled Philips. And there is a version from 2014 which says Assembled in USA; I guess this was NAC winding in NOS pancakes in random shells. Here is an overview: www.45spaces.com/audio-compact-cassette-blank-tapes/a.php?a=kodak&c=xa
Kodak video cassettes from the 80's and 90's were OEM products all over; first made by TDK, then Saehan, then BASF.
8:08 who's that foster guy?
I live in Japan, so if you ever need help finding anything out here, lemme know :D The unopened, "new old stock" cassettes I've found at the thrift stores here would blow your mind (and the prices would too)! Example, 900 yen ($9~) thrift haul: i.imgur.com/TRik7sY.jpg
Yeah, find me some TDK AD-S and Axis HD Masters 😁
@@CassetteComeback they are not that hard to get, but i doubt bout the brand Axis ;-)
カセットテープに日本円価格のシール貼って有りますね◎○
beauty is not skin deep -BUT ugly is to the bone-lolol
"That's" cassettes are made by Goldstar. So "Keep" cassette probably made in Korea by Goldstar.
ChevyCaprice90 Yeah, in fact on the wrapper it is stated that the tape is made in 韓国 (Korea)
That's cassettes are made by Taiyo Yuden.
@@CassetteComeback Yes, but it was an unusual combination. Shells for cassettes were made by Taiyo Yuden. But they ordered tape with some elements like hubs from different manufacturers. For example, the tape in "That's" FM-series cassettes were made by Sony with hubs and leader-tape. Actually inner Japan-market kinda weird. For example, Fuji cooperated their Fuji-branded cassette production with Sony and SKC, but their cassettes branded as Axia were always made with Fuji Japan-made components.
ChevyCaprice90 Yes, that KEEP cassette screams Goldstar to me.
Не обижайся на меня мужик за мою остроту.. Я все твои видео пересмотрел! но ты распечатываешь кассеты так, как будто у тебя руки из жопы.. и спешишь куда-то)
