I totally agree that being a multi-instrumentalist increases one's ability to develop new ways of soloing along with boosting an understanding of an arrangement. Picking up the bass along with violin and mandolin really gave me added insight.
thank you so much for this video, I am a french violonist for a long time (45 years!!!) and I have just discovered that mandolin is nearly the same as a violin! So I have bought one and now I'm trying to play it . I hope it will be fun! your advices will help me , sure! Thanks again from France
This is such an informative video from a violinist perspective, which is perfect for me, thanks 😊 I don't have a mandolin yet, but that's a minor detail, lol
"...might be a cool melody" Immediately starts to play the first few notes of Canon in D 🤣 Thank you so much for this video! Love, a classically trained violinist wanting to learn mandolin
@UCkHQIYWAAAhUIfoHqPYLDqg Because the Mandolin is tuned like a Violin, it's an ideal 2nd instrument for Violinists, a Tenor Guitar tuned like a Violin down an Octave (GDAE) could be their 3rd instrument, & a Tenor Banjo tuned like a Violin can be their 4th instrument. The frets will make it easier to find the notes (there are Fretted Violins too).
An octave mandolin tuned GDAE could be their fifth instrument. A mandocello, albeit tuned to CGDA could be their sixth instrument. An electric fender mandostrat could be their seventh instryument.
Amazing play and so informative about how to play mandolin and get so captivating melodies/harmonies. As a guitar composer/performer for book trailers about comics who also trained on viola and is still influenced by orchestral players, your modeling here and playing is captivating since you explain nicely how to pick and inspire various musical ideas that can be compared to violin or any instrument. Many cheers!
Thank you so much Dorothy! I really appreciate your comment! 😊 I would love to hear some of your music! Please let me know if there is anywhere I can listen! 🎶
Congratulations, you play really well! I really admire those who know how to play various instruments, this is fantastic! Congratulations and q God bless you always.👏👏👏👏✌✌✌👍👍🔔🔔😁😁😁👀👀🇧🇷🇧🇷🎻🎻🎻
The Mandolin is way easier to play than a Violin because it has frets & you get to play w/ a Pick. It's much easier for beginners to make a good sound on the Mandolin. Thomastik Precision Strings are Flatwound Strings designed like Violin Strings.
@@JonathanHWarren The frets on a Mandolin do help with the chords, you can also tune a Tenor Guitar like a Violin down an Octave so that it can be your 3rd instrument.
I will definitely make another video on that! But it is basically one shape for each of your playing fingers! Very exciting way to learn something in all 12 keys! Helps with improvising too! Thank you also for the kind words on my video! 😊🙏🏽🙏🏽
Yes definitely! Borrow one from a friend or pick one up at a pawn shop just to try it out! I think you’ll find it hard to put down and really fun to play! Especially with all of your violin experience! 😊
I'm thinking about getting one, but being left-handed, there aren't many options to choose from. So far, only one company that I know makes one for left-handed people, but it's a bottom of the line quality.
There's a neat method book to help with that called "Mandolin for Violinists" which includes some backing tracks you can use as your background band.
That’s awesome!

The mandolin has intrigued me for some time. You're only encouraging me to part with more of my hard-earned money. Thanks for the great instruction!
It is such a wonderful instrument! A very fulfilling investment indeed! 😃Thank you for the kind words Jeff!!

Super helpful video! Thank you so much and greetings from Sweden
Thank you so much!! Hi from Nashville! 👋🏽 😄
Mandolin is a great 2nd instrument for Violinists, cause learning to strum Chords kicks in.
Absolutely! Chords can be such a foreign concept on violin... but on mandolin they become a fundamental! Love the mandolin for this reason too.

This was such a nice video! I'd really like to learn the 4 shapes you mentioned. 🙂

I’ve always wanted to pick this up since I’ve been playing violin since 1st grade. Maybe this is a calling...🤔

If you look closely. This guy is playing a McClanahan mando, meaning he probably knows way more about playing Amanda Lynn than he's letting on.

That’s tough… I haven’t heard of a left handed mandolin, now that I think of it…. If you find a good one, please let us know!
Cool
