Lately Ive been hearing my fellow nurses say that Atrovent thickens secretions. Is that true?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, that's a great question, I hadn't heard of that before so I had to look around to find out. According to the FDA in 2012, "Controlled clinical studies have demonstrated that ipratropium bromide does not alter either mucociliary clearance or the volume or viscosity of respiratory secretions." So according to the FDA, Atrovent does not thicken secretions.
      Hope that helps!

I feel like my lungs have been worse since they phased out CFCs & replaced them with HFAs. I know others who are having the same issues (but physicians just accuse us of not using the inhaler properly…even though I was able to use them properly when the propellant was CFC 🤷‍♀️ & I get the same poor results when using an aerochamber). I often wonder if I have a sensitivity to HFA.

That sounds awful! I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you have been able to sort that issue out by now, thanks for sharing.

@@NurseRyan shortly after I made this comment, I started taking NAC (N-acetyl l-cystiene)...GAME CHANGER!! My lung symptoms have been cut at least in half! I have barely had to take my rescue inhaler. I can't believe how well it works.

Hi, I always recommend speaking to your primary healthcare provider for any medical advice.
      - According to Mosby's 2017 Nursing Drug Reference (30th Edition): Guarana and large amounts of green tea may increase Ipratropium's bronchodilator effect. Other inhaled bronchodilators may increase toxicity. Phenothiazines, antihistamines, Disopyramide, and the herb belladonna may increase Ipratropium's anticholinergic effect.
      - However, other references report "no significant reactions"
      I hope this helps!
      - Ryan
