  • Neca’s Nosferatu figure. Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (German: Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens) is a 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a vampire who preys on the wife (Greta Schröder) of his estate agent (Gustav von Wangenheim) and brings the plague to their town.

I too have been perplexed about the decision to include Orlok in the Universal Monsters line. Universal is distributing the upcoming remake, but they have nothing to do with the original, nor have they ever. My best guess is that NECA just didn't want to release it as a standalone figure, but as part of a line, and the UniMonsters were the closest fit.

Focus is distributing Nosferatu in the U.S. while Universal Pictures International handles international distribution as of Nov 28, 2023

I was kind of confused about it, too. But apparently, Nosferatu is definitely considered one of the Universal Monsters. I'm not sure when that changed, but after digging around the internet, it does appear that way.

I'm unable to find any information indicating that Nosferatu was ever in any way affiliated with Universal. The only connection I noted was that Universal is distributing the upcoming remake, but that has nothing to do with the 1922 version, which was distributed by the Film Arts Guild for its US theatrical run.
While it certainly provided much inspiration for the early Universal horror films, as far as I can tell, the 1922 Nosferatu is not associated with Universal Pictures in any way. The original film is in the public domain, as is the novel on which it is unofficially based. So at this point, no one can make any legal claim to this version of the character.
