  • 2006 Mazda mx5 with a faulty electric window.
To fix the window we had to remove the centre console and dismantle the window switch
    Fix it
    Then reinstall it all
Luv it when we attempt stuff we nothing about and it works!

Thanks for the video, used it to help my son diagnose the issue on his MX-5 NC. Hopefully as a useful tip for others, you don't actually have to lift the centre consol fully out after struggling to unclip the connector. You can just reach under and press the metal corner tabs on the switch module allowing it to pop out with the cable still attached. You can then screw the consol back into position until you have the switch unit fixed when you simply clip it back in. If you have a dry joint then just flexing the connector whilst popping the switch unit out typically gets the connection back up and running as a temporary fix anyway.

Hi, I have a 2008 GT PHRT, thanks for your video, every year the problems increased, I am doing the repair and hope when I put the battery in the car this spring that everything will be fine. Thanks again, it’s much appreciated.

Woohooo!! Thank you, same failure on my US drivers (left) side window. Window was intermittently failing randomly until it stopped working entirely. Same pin.. we probed the resistance between the header pin and PCB trace, and found a 0.5 ohm resistance.. it presumably increases as the connection wears, until the resistance drop across the connection is too high to drive the motor.
Anyway, thank you again, I love Australians!!

Holy crap. Buddy, you are my hero. My son's driver's window (USA, left side) only worked occasionally. It had this exact failure on the same pin. Obviously a design flaw. You saved my untold hours of debug time. Thank you.

Thanks so much for your video. Saved me a ton of money. My drivers window would intermittently not work at all. Found a bad solder joint on the board, different one than yours. Works great now. By the way if you have to take your center console apart again, your emergency brake boot just pops off.

Thanks for the vid. After loosening the console I managed to pop the switch by wrestling the 4 clips while prising the unit from above. THEN disconnect the 2 wiring clips on my 2009 NC PRHT auto. The part number for this one, black, reads N174 66 350.

Thank you. My 2009 Mazda Miata MX5 GT has a power window broken. I will look at this. Thank you for such detailed information. Thank you for saying 99% tin and 0.7% copper. Who knew? My amateur radio call sign is KF5LJN. My friend Rob May W5WS told me the Weller WES51 is a good soldering iron. FYI I bought a Fluke 17B+ Digital Multimeter. Rob said that one has a better internal circuit protection. I like it. Anyway thanks for the help. My mom might help me open the console and get the correct solder. My car sold new in Austin, TX, had two owners in Arkansas, then an airplane pilot bought it in Texas at auction and now me. It has problems, but Mazda made a strong machine. My VIN begins with J indicating made in Japan. - Mr. Michael Griffin

Thank you, thank you , thank you! This resolved my issue (twice). The first time, a year or two ago, I did a bad job of soldering, this time I did a better job. Having a US 2008 model, it affects the driver side window. A replacement switch is currently about $200 US dollars. Also, the entire boot over the parking break comes off quite easily, on my car, so it isn't as tough getting the console back into place.

Shoots! I have this issue for almost one year. Opened it and only looked at the golden contacts trying to find oxydation... Without success. Finaly I ordered the part on Mx5 parts for 130 EUR...
Didn't received it yet. Too bad I didn't saw your video before.
Hats off and thank for sharing!

I just want to thank you both for wonderful video. I had two friends helping me over the past month or so and After I could not do a perfect job with a soldering iron that would not heat up to the required temp, My friend brought his better soldering set up yesterday and got a perfect bead build up on the gpu contact. I put it back together and turned on the ignition and we both just dropped our jaws with shock and delight!! Woopee! The cost of the switch part for me with Miata Club discount was going to be $250, not as bad as yours but still on a retirement income, I pursue all self repairs I can.

Thank you so much for the video! Same issue in my 2008. This video saved me $250 USD and, more improtantly, hours of trying to diagnose this in the North Carolina summer heat. I was able to get the interior panel off with the wiring harness connected to the window switchs after disconnecting the parking bake switch and the harness tiedown on one of the shifter studs. A magnification light helped with the soldering and watchmaking tweezers helped a lot to get the PCB screws back in place.

Guys, thanks so much for this. Some forum walkthroughs about but this is class. EXACT same issue with my MX-5 2.0lNiseko hardtop. Passenger window went out of the blue, couldn't take down hard top. Window half open and it's cold and rainy here on the mud island. Fixed up in a couple hours today. There must be a factory defect with that unit, because it's quite common that DPU contact failing over time and none of the others.

Your video was the first one I watched from my Google search results. Had the window fixed Sunday afternoon so I went for another drive. Because I already had a soldering iron and solder, it cost about 5 cents.

I wanted to add my thanks as well. Dude! Thanks! My '07 MX-5 with PRHT and Automatic trans had the same issue. No mechanic near me would touch it. Followed your instructions on getting the console and the switch out, with some minor differences. My switch had two connectors and there was a wire connector to light the Automatic Trans panel in the console. But when I got the window switch out, it had the same badly soldered pin. For the price of a little soldering iron, I got it all back together and working perfectly! Thank you so much.! From the other side of the world in Atlanta Georgia, USA. Blessings friend!

Thanks for the video. I would have never tackled the problem without your lead. It turns out that the solder on my circuit board was fine, but the "down" contact on my passenger side (right side in the US) rocker switch was corroded. I elected to replace the switch because it is not as expensive here in the US. I dont sauder. I use the trim tools on all my Miata interior kit. FYI, I also removed the boot for,the brake handle as needed like for the gear shirt. And I have a different after market center piece replacing the cup holders. So 4 screws not 5. I just happened to come across your video while searching for how to remove my door handle from my 2008 MX-5 GT RTH. I decided to watch it because in 2019 I had the same problem with my driver's side window not working as well as my retractable roof not working either. So I watched your video to see how you resolved the problem.
Back in 2019 I could not easily find a solution to fix my car, so I had to resort to Trial and error. At 1st I thought it was the window regulator and bought a replacement, but it wasn't. Then I tried to replace the center consul switch, but the replacement I got from the salvage yard was from a 2006 and I ended up blowing a fuse. I eventually found this discussion in a forum ( forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=606768 ) and decided to take my switch apart. Guess what... my solder was broken on the same pin as yours and the one in the forum. I soldered it over the old solder like you did and that fixed my window and roof problem too.
It's been working for two years now. I wish I had come across your video back then, but you had not published yet.
I just wanted to share my similar story. Your video was good and I'm sure it will help other's with similar problems. Thanks for this video, now I need to keep searching to find out how to remove and repair my door handle. I have keyless entry system and the rubber button in the door handle is worn, so I ordered a replacement button on eBay.

      Hi Thomas

      Good luck with door handle!!

    • @thomascain1177
      @thomascain1177 3 роки тому

@@gavanbrowne3063 I managed to get the door handle off and replaced the rubber button with a kit I found on eBay. Unfortunately, replacing the old rubber button did not solve the problem. The switch must be worn out, so I will have to replace the switch component. I'm pretty sure it's the switch because the keyless entry button on the passenger side works all the time.
