- Today is a joyous and emotional day for me. And I say so because this, today, represents one aspect of a journey. The pilgrimage; the pilgrimage of this country finding its way of our people finding the space, and above all else of the lessons of life that shall guide not those who have gone before, but those who must now come and face all that this world has to challenge it.
I start this evening by giving thanks; giving thanks not only to the Almighty, but giving thanks to all who played a part on this long journey. The journey started in 1937. And the journey started deliberately in the hands of those who understood that this country had good people, but it didn't have a good society.
And the people wanted to be active citizens and to craft their own destiny, to make that good society. Their living circumstances didn't differ much from what it was a century before when emancipation was rolled out, really not for the slaves, but to appease the conscience of others.
For if it were for those who were slaves, the living circumstances of their parents and grandparents and great grandparents of those in 1937 would have been far, far, far different from what they had to endure.
But this journey reminded us that history doesn't happen in a straight line. And that very often it takes all kinds of efforts including the acknowledgment of defeats, including the persistence to remain committed, and that lesson found itself not only in the actions of those who came and led the 1937 rebellion; it came also to be reflected in those who believed that that rebellion should never be cast in a light as if it was simply men breaking the law and never be cast in a light as if it was to be forgotten by those who would come after.
The resonance of the actions of those in 1937 can be found in those who found it necessary to start the process of enfranchisement; the political enfranchisement, the worker enfranchisement, the social and economic enfranchisement that would follow. And we saw the difficulty of the journey of those early patriots mirrored in the battle to make the current generation and future generations know of what transpired.
Ambassador Commission told us today and I thank him for that, of sharing the journey of how we have got here. His, Trevor Prescod and many other members of the pan-African community labored when no one would listen to them, labored trying to recreate for a modern Barbados that had so distanced itself from those memories. But there would not be daunted. I stand here today honored to pay tribute to them all, and I ask you to join me in paying tribute to them.

I have loved your beautiful country since 1998, when I first saw an awesome video of the BBC Songs of Praise video from Barbados. Sadly, I have not been able to find the unmatched beautiful Songs of Praise from Barbados anywhere again. God bless Barbados & God bless the Caribbean.
Greatest Caribbean Leader of our time.Congratulations Barbados.
An exceptional leader of great stature; may all Barbadians rise to the challenge of creating a nation worthy of her vision.
We need a Prime Minister like this in Jamaica. Strong, Proud black woman..
Jamaica needs a prime minister in the first place.
Jamaica needs a Jamaican leader to have the ability to lead a great people.
By the way she loves Jamaica very much.
And she quoted Marcus Garvey
" Emancipate ourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds"
I totally agree! ... that's why I have to love Michael Manley so much!
She is like the Michael Manley of this era. If Manley was still around, 🇯🇲 would have done with the Queen long ago! As a white 🇯🇲n, Manley was more African than ALL the other black Prime Ministers that followed after.
I am expecting that the next Barbados honour awards, this very strong African Queen 👑 be given the honour of a National Hero of🇧🇧
Powerful woman of Barbados @ such a time of now.
Thank you, madam. I am glad this speech is not just for you, Barbados, but for all Africans all over the world 🌎 you have done us good! I wish all others will take a step like you to bring us out and free us of colonization of our mine! The slave plantation days are over! We thank god for bringing you to this forefront to speak the truth and break us out of the bandage and lose our feet 👣 to walk and chew as you say! I laugh 😅 so hard! I love this lady so much! A Conference of African Heads of State would do well to ask her to be a guest speaker.
She quite likely, would light a "fire" to help unite the Continent of Africa once and for all.🙏💪✨✨
Her heart felt words are that powerful.

It's so unfortunate that 🇯🇲have lost/is losing all It's known for. 🇯🇲politicians these days are as useless as those in the African Union.

Well said PM Motley ...!!!
Speaking as a Norwegian, I also long for the day when we welcome our new Republic 😀
Barbados is a different situation. The monarchy there was foreign to them. Democracy flourishes in Norway as far as I know. Love that area of the world ❤
Wished our Jamaican prime minister had even 1% moral value of this Woman speaking.
I like this lady very intelligent and gangster
A good role model for all lefties politicians. Her labour party won 29 out of 30 parliamentary seats. Well done
That achievement is beyond amazing. No wonder she emphasized protecting the minority.🤗

@@Kmelch09 My teenage daughters said they want to be like her. My friend my girls look at me and said those words i almost cried. She is the perfect antidote for this terrible pandemic. Barbados happy total Independence from Britain. Congratulations.
You should have let Barbadian make this decision on they own with a referendum then it would made history but only 25 people decided the future of Barbadian so sad.
O Please" it is in the constitution. Hush! Yuh'.association.
Wat will Barbados benefit from this
You wouldn't know unless you've been colonised
They should have removed their mask for a special moment in history.
