    As a kid who barely knew how to program BASIC I discovered Jim’s book on 6502 Assembly, and I convinced my mom to buy it. That book literally changed the course of my life. For decades I didn’t know what Jim looked like, but his name is emblazoned in my memory like few others. Rest In Peace my friend.

    Thanks for this Robin! And I agree, Jim Butterfield was an absolute LEGEND (R.I.P.) and I learned a lot from him and the TPUG magazine. In fact, I had something published in TPUG which for a kid at the time was mind-blowing!

    I had no idea that your channel was so new until this video - I figured it was a few years old and I only just found out about it (6 months ago). Your videos are so well done I thought you had been doing it for years. C64 is about nostalgia to me as it was my first computer - I wish I didn't give it away. You're giving me the itch to maybe try some assembly programming on TheC64 - I never went much beyond the floating balloon as a kid. I do find your assembly videos too fast paced though. Otherwise I enjoy your humour and presentation style. I think you should appear in more videos, as much as we enjoy your trademark hand gestures!

    Hi there Robin! When I first started watching this channel I thought it was quite an established and old channel. I'm surprised to hear that it's only a year old. Well, congratulations! It's an amazing achievement, and your channel will only continue to grow from here. I think that your format of videos is excellent, and I don't think you should change a thing no matter what other people say. Otherwise you'll lose interest and it'll become a chore to make videos. I have both a vic-20 and a Commodore 64and I recently acquired a TI 99/4a and it's been really interesting to play with while watching your videos. I really want to get the assembler cartridge for the TI-99 as well as an assembler for my vic-20.
    Anyway, congratulations again, and here's to another year of incredible growth!

    Thanks for your videos! I am a big Jim Butterfield fan and have been since I chatted with him on Q-link in the 80's. He is my c64 hero. BTW, this is a great episode to get a recap of all your episodes, added a lot of context and makes me want to go back and investigate many of them.

    In the early 90's I would often help staff the TPUG tables at a local computer show in Toronto (Computer Fest). I was invited to help out at the TPUG table for the World of Commodore in 1993 and got to meet Jim Butterfield, albeit briefly! Who knows -- maybe we ran into one another there? What a memorable expo that was, especially for a teenager! The A600 and A1200 computers were hot, as well as the use of Video Toaster and Amiga in its production of Babylon 5.

    • @8_Bit
      @8_Bit  4 роки тому

      That's really cool! I didn't get to World of Commodore in the '90s, it wasn't until the 2000s that I was there regularly. However, I did see the TPUG booth at a couple other computer shows in Toronto in the early '90s, maybe you were there? One was the same year that Apple had a big demonstration of their new QuickTime technology. I was there with another Amiga-owning friend and we laughed at their tiny postage-stamp-sized video playback. We were used to full-screen already!

    About a year ago, UA-cam algorithms recommended me your first video. I liked the subject and your calm, unagitated way of narration, which unfortunately is rare nowadays on UA-cam. So in an instant, I became one of the first couple subscribers. And loved every of your videos since.
    Frankly spoken, I guess you're up to par with your idol Jim Butterfield. Great educational videos, detailed, inventive, and I always learnt something new.

      The vinyl easter egg video was responsible for somewhere around half of the subscribers, with (now) over 500,000 views. Before that video there were around 7,000 subscribers; each new video gained maybe 100 to 500 subscribers. Most of the views were generated by UA-cam's browse features, though certainly the external views would help at times, coming from Facebook, and a bit from Twitter and when a bigger blog would link to one of my videos (especially the Super Mario one). Really, I don't know how it all happened, I mostly just tried to make videos about whatever was interesting me that week :)

    Congrats! I'm finally in on the first year of a great channel. And my reaction to seeing your face: "My eyes, the goggles do nothing!" ;) Oh, as for other 8bit computers, bring it on. I think most of us from back in the day owned, or were interested in a great many of those systems. I owned two versions of the Atari 2600, the small slim one and large one. A C64, breadbox and C64c. Amiga 500, 1200 and 2000HD as well as a TRS-80 model one with homemade RAM! I always loved the look of the Atari 600 and 800 computers and almost bought them instead of the C64, but ultimately went with the C64 as it had MUCH more software support for it.

    • @Okurka.
      @Okurka. 4 роки тому

      Homemade RAM? How did you do that?

    • @NeilRoy
      @NeilRoy 4 роки тому

      @@Okurka. I didn't, I got it from someone else who did. It was a large box with some sort of wire wrapped electronics. I know about electronics and memory, but I don't understand how he did it. I suppose he could have replicated the same circuits that exist in modern RAM somehow. It was pretty neat. I wish I still had the system, but alas, I live in an apartment building and am limited with space.

    You're right, I skipped all the interview videos that Retro Man Cave did. But it's not just retro type interviews, I just skip those in general across all genres. Keep up the programming videos, most of the time, I'm already familiar with what you are covering, but I've still learned a few things that surprised me even after all these decades. I released a bunch of C64 programs back in the '80s. You can find them on the GEnie archive under the "ST/R" name.

    I like your channel very much because it has quality content and is a bit different from other channels. I learn things I didn't know when I was a kid, and it inspires me to connect my commodore computers to my 1084S Monitor and try things out for myself. One thing I have to say about videos with low view count: I think it is pretty normal that a broad range of people are attracted to this channel, even those with less programming skills/background. The whole 8 Bit scene, from The 8-Bit Guy to your channel and so on consists of different type of people. Regardless of your view count, I think if you produce some videos where you know that they will have a lower view count won't hurt your fan base. They will strengthen it nonetheless. And one thing that I would be very interested in would be if you do some Commander X16 stuff in the future (if you like). But that is my personal wish of course. I wish you all the best and will take a look into patreon!

    I have already gotten so much out of your videos. I am glad you are doing what you are doing ;) I have actually downloaded some of your videos in order to keep a local copy in order to reference to. The Fastload video taught me a whole lot of stuff I never knew about the cart I have been using for the past 30 some odd years.
    Thank you!

    I'm a programmer professionally. By watching your videos it puts my profession in perspective, and makes me realise that in the end... there is genius in every language, and on every kind of hardware.
    Don't fuss too much over downvotes... the point is, most of us think you're doing great work. Move forward on that positivity.

    keep up the great work. I particularly like your more in depth videos that involve programming, especially assembly. There are a log of people that cover game reviews, product review, etc; but few people can cover assembly code, and make it understandable. Thanks for all your hard work.

    I of course had to sit through the whole set of Jim Butterfield videos. I laughed probably far too loudly when, on his sequential files video, he slipped in a reference to _Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice_. Oy!
    Wow, nice to put a face to your voice. The beard's quite nice!

    Butterfield quote at 4:00 “who else would stay up till 3am cursing and swearing and then claim they had a good time?”
    My wife did that the other night.... We both woke up wide awake at like 1am and looked at each other, and agreed that we could both do something that didn’t cost anything. She’s walking around a little funny at the moment...

    Well..no offense to the great Jim Butterfield, but I have to say you have hit upon a winning combination. I find your presentations fun and engaging, and you have one of the most pleasant presentation styles I've come across. Even amongst the best of speakers there is usually something about them that I find irritating, or detracting from the videos. Not so with your channel: I can say that after having watched a pretty good portion of the approximately 160+ videos you've got on this channel alone, I haven't come across one negative thing I can say about your delivery style.

    The most boggling thing for me, is that kids today are absolutely obsessed with simple games like Minecraft, and although i've never seen it, I would bet my left nut that this could run on a Commodore 64.
    The Real C=64 could be sold in shops NOW and still be a huge success.

    I find these very interesting but (or because) I never owned Commodore. Will you ever do anything about other 8-Bits like ZX Spectrum or Atari?

    • @8_Bit
      @8_Bit  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I did have my Timex/Sinclair 1000 on in the VIC-20 text adventure episode, and showed my Tandy CoCo for a bit in the Microsoft Easter Egg episode recently. I don't have a ZX Spectrum yet, but I do have some Atari computers that I'll try to show soon. I just don't know nearly as much about those computers so I'll have to learn a lot to have something interesting to say, I think :)
