  • Don't be afraid to invest in long-term freeze-dried storage simply because you don't know how you'll use it all before it goes bad. You can repackage it for smaller amounts and make it work for you!
    **Another way that I lost the footage for and didn't notice until it was too late -- you can vacuum seal the freeze-dried foods into vacuum seal bags or mylar bags (use O2 absorbers in mylar in most cases). .**
    PLUS~ I'll show you a quick and easy way to make awesome onion powder that won't make you cry!

    This is a game changer! And one of those "why didn't I think of that?!?" moments!! I have #10 cans that I could use but hate to get into them for fear of some of it going to waste...but not anymore!! Such a great idea, thank you for sharing it.

      Kathy Duncan don’t go crazy with prepping in the beginning like a lot of people do. Think about what you like to eat. Get the core things first. That way you will have things first. For example: Rice, beans.and sugar. You can live on just rice and beans for a very long time. Also there is no need to get tons of different dried beans. We just have pinto beans. It will work for most stuff. The last things you do is comfort foods...what ever that is for you.

    If you don’t have a vacuum sealer you can also use food grade silica packets. While they do not do the same as oxy absorbers, they will keep the food dry. You can buy them amazon

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  4 роки тому

      Actually - for long term storage the way we're talking about, silica don't do the same things as O2 absorbers do, which is what you would want instead of vacuum sealing. you want to remove the oxygen for long-term storage.

      If you don't have a vacuum sealer, you can use a manual brake bleeder with the Food Saver jar attachment to pull a vacuum in the jar.

    Thanks. Very valuable video. Great communication skills. I am going to pack our onions in food saver bags. I am going to put the in parchment paper pouches ahead of that. Question: Do you need, or recommend, putting oxygen absorbers with the onions in the package? Many thanks.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry

      You don't need O2 absorbers if you package properly. But if you want them, use them.

    So you can open all freeze dried food, vacuum seal it and it should keep for 10-15 years? You did this with the meat also? What about whole freeze dried eggs, can you do the same? Sorry I am ancient, but new to this.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому

      According to the manufacturer, no. But you if you vacuum seal it back up - you'll get an easy 1-2 years. You may get longer.

    Can you seal dehydrated onions or garlic in foodsaver bags? Ugh I just bought 3lb's of chopped onions and 1 1/2 lbs of garlic and was going to vacuum seal in foodsaver bags in 1/4 Cup amount (med size onion)...TOMORROW. Now I can't find anywhere if its ok to do.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому +1

      You can - but they can be air permeable over time - they were meant for freezer storage, not necessarily long-term food storage on the shelf. However, if you have the option, you can store in a regular glass jar and just measure out the amount you need when you need it - without the waste of the bags. But the other thing to remember about bags is that some dehydrated foods can have very sharp edges, which can cause micropunctures in the bag.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  9 місяців тому

      Sure, but every time you open it you need to replace the O2 absorber.

    Can the vacuum sealer attachment be used on half-pint jars - since they use regular mouth lids and rings - or just pints and quarts? I didn't know if the small volume of the jar would make a difference?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  3 роки тому +1

      It's regular mouth or wide-mouth, not necessarily the size of the jar. So since they are a regular mouth jar, yes, it will work!

    Could I vacuum seal in bags instead of jars? I'm trying to make my own meals, putting freeze dried brocolli, ground beef into a bag and vaccuum seal prepared meals from the bulk broccoli and bulk ground beef?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  3 роки тому

      Yes you can! But remember, some vegetables can be sharp and poke holes in bags. So a few things you can do are wrap them in parchment then vacuum seal, double bag them, etc. Your example meal will probably be fine just like it is.

    Does the 25yr count down apply for the all individual recanned products with oxygen absorber or just vacuum sealed

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  4 роки тому

      no, as I mentioned in the video, you can't guarantee that 25 years (and neither can they - they suggest up to 25 years). But it does give you at least 5 years+ easily .. and you'll likely get many more.

    This is a very informative video, the particular items you showed are actually dehydrated, not freeze dried.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  4 роки тому

      Yes, I know it is. It's what I had on hand to show how to do it, but the majority of foods coming from the companies in these cans is freeze-dried. It's not about the object, but about the process.

      @@ThePurposefulPantry Hmmmn okay, I think clarification is important as someone might purchase a product based on what was said and be surprised when they read the label. Augason farms specializes in dehydrated food, upwards of over 90%.

    So even though the companies say once can is open it has 1 yr shelf life you can repackage for longer life?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  4 роки тому +1

      An open can with no preservation does have a shorter life. When you vacuum seal it, you're extending that opened life (can't get the 25 years again), so you can keep it longer. But if you just leave it in the can like it is, you definitely have a short shelf-life.

    I came over from Suttons daze channel I have two questions about dehydrating I have a lot of cucumbers and zucchini can I dehydrate it and power it to add to food without changing the taste of the food I am adding it to ? I got a load of frozen chickpeas I was wondering if I dehydrate them and ground them can they be added to soup to thicken it and also add protein? Thank you

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  4 роки тому +1

      Yes to all. But you have to start small with the cucumbers and zucchini so that you aren't overloading your dish. I suggest 1/2 TB at the most as you get started, and add other vegetables into it over time to have a generic vegetable blend.

    How much onion powder do you get out of one of those cans? It would seem to me that buying and repackaging regular onion powder would be more financially feasible. Nice video though. I'm repackaging my #10s for smaller servings.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому

      Price isn't always the end goal. The fact that most onion powder from the store is pretty tasteless means that using this to make onion powder AND use onions in meals tastes much better.

      Amazon has the augason farms. But just a word order them separately because they seem to get damaged if shipped together.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  4 роки тому

      Yes, because when COVID hit, they were swamped with orders - and now all of the companies are struggling to produce enough to restock to demand...so it will be a little while. Thrive seems to be doing a good job of getting back in stock more often than Augason Farms, so you might want to keep a lookout there, as well.
      I don't rep them, but my friend, Leisa from SuttonsDaze does if you care to use her link: www.thrivelife.com/suttonsdaze

      Because it's what I had - most foods are freeze-dried, but most freeze-dried companies dehydrate the onions - it's the process of how to save the cans so that they last when you can't use them all at once - not what is inside that particular can.
