When people talk about Absolutes, they always mention how great it is to have the enlarged art. But I actually really appreciate the bigger speech bubbles too. Having the text so much bigger, really makes a comic a lot more pleasant to read for me. And I don't even have old eyes yet! This is especially true for comics like Dark Knight Returns; some of those pages have like 12+ panels with tiny, tiny text. EDIT: Thanks for the video BTW!
I worked as Neal Adams assistant at a comic expo last year and I was fortunate to pick his brain about so much stuff. He was so kind and he signed my absolute green arrow/Green lantern book. I’m the biggest green arrow fan so it was a dream and I bought the absolute Kevin smith GA cuz we’ll like I said I’m a huge GA fan so I guess it depends lol I actually have Phil hesters art of GA as a tattoo sleeve on my arm. Great Vid man!!
I'm glad to see someone separating the wheat from the chaff when it comes to Absolutes. I see a lot of people who want almost everything to become an Absolute and I wonder what they're thinking. In my mind, the Absolute format should be reserved for the absolute cream of the crop comics. I don't own many Absolutes. I have all the Sandmans and they're the best looking books in my collection. I haven't seen any other Absolute put together with the same care as these volumes. I agree about Watchmen. I had the Absolute but I gave it away. I didn't think the artwork translated well to the larger size. In fact, it looked kind of fuzzy to me. The only other Absolutes I have are Hush (I'm a year in the future. The omnibus never happened), The Worlds's Greatest Superheroes, New Frontier and Crisis on Infinite Earths(mainly for George Perez's artwork). I passed on Kingdom Come because I always felt the story was derivative of Watchmen. I also agree with you about the Dark Knight Absolute. If it only contained the first series, I'd want it but once I learned it contained the sequel, I said, "Forget it."
I’m currently reading watchmen for the first time and I chose to get it in absolute format and I’m really glad I did, super good experience and glad I waited to read it in absolute.

Just got Absolute All-Star Superman yesterday. 100% worth the upgrade. Now it's time for some Alex Ross and his Kingdom Come + Absolute World's Greates Superheroes :-D
I only get Absolutes for special reasons like if the story has two different versions like Killing Joke or if I can’t find a different hardcover format like Batman: Hush (I hate Trade Paperbacks).
Hahaha! I get what you're saying! I have to buy a lot of books to keep up to date but I also have a budget - and I think it's smart to keep that in mind for me AND my viewers! I should probably make an updated "staying within your budget" video

I've only got three Absolutes: Kingdom Come, All-Star Superman, and one you didn't cover: DC The New Frontier. I bought all three for the artwork primarily (they just happen to have compelling stories, too!). I'm going to look for the absolute Worlds Greatest Super-Heroes for the Ross art now, too
The only reason I can think of for having left out a great book like New Frontier is that it might have been OOP at the time. Fabulous book by an all time great taken far too soon!
Incidentally, the deluxe of Dark Knignt Returns has Dark Knight Strikes Again tacked onto the back as well. It reminds me of Odyssey being thrown in the Batman by Neal Adam's omnibus.

Well, I have two that you've covered in these videos, the Absolute Greatest Superheroes and Absolute All-Star Superman. In addition to those I also have the Absolute New Frontier (15th Anniversary Edition), and the two Jack Kirby Fourth World Absolutes. Anyway, that was a lot of for what it's worth, but hope you're feeling much better by now, and thanks for sharing your thoughts on these books !
I'm glad I held off on purchasing the Absolute Wonder Woman. The price point of both the Absolutes was really hard to digest for me and knowing the Omni collects the entirety of the run for less cost. I am pre-ordering this from my bookstore asap. It's interesting that a month after the WW omni comes out DC is releasing the first 12 issues in a essential tpb collection. I don't know if the rest of the run is coming though. It's weird how the premium formats come out before the trade collections. The same is happening with Transmetropolitan too. I guess they are milking some of their properties as much as they can.

I don't honestly know what the deluxe collects, but the Absolute has over 120 pages of extras! Tons of character bios, sketches, scripts, it's the most interesting and fun bunch of extras in an Absolute I can remember. It's packed!

Thanks for the video, man! I'd like your opinion on the following subject. I REALLY like the New 52 Wonder Woman art, it strikes to me as very few arts on comics have. However, I'm not very fond of "traditional" super heroes like DC, Marvel etc., and I've never read anything from Wonder Woman. Considering this context, would you recommend getting the New 52 WW absolute on a 25% sale or something? Jess, this is a great idea. I have dark knight returns in deluxe. I haven't read dark knight returns yet, but I'll read it out of morbid curiosity, it looks terrible in a funny way to me. I bought those alex ross absolute reprints on day one, they're meant to be the biggest format possible. I'm debating on Wonder Woman. My wife wants to read wonder woman, but she's not fond of omnibus. The Absolute are big and split in two, which looks manageable to hold and read. But man they cost more. What to do. First world problem, lol.
Dark Knight Returns is great, it's Dark Knight Strikes Again that's so awful lol. I'm keeping my WW Absolutes, FYI. I like the art on as big a format as possible for this book.

Great video Jess! I was on the fence about Justice and it's pretty cheap locally right now so I think I'll pull the trigger and get it. My one question was what about the Leob/Sale Batman Absolutes, Long Halloween, Dark Victory and Haunted are they worth owning in absolute? I have Long Halloween and Dark Victory I can still get but it's out of print. Oddly enough the first Absolute I owned was the Watchman as a wedding gift. But I don't think I've ever read that copy I always read my trade. Thanks for a great video.

I was never much of a Watchmen guy, was before my time (read it once and enjoyed it though). But I was there for Kingdom Come and that book is my personal Watchmen. Dr Sasilekha V.S for some reason I can’t access your Swamp Thing question so I’ll answer it here. It’s an amazing story but the art is subjective. If you love the art, then you should get it in Absolute format.
from Ikea I use Kallax and the narrow Billy's and Absolutes fit fine on those. I wouldn't use the wider Billy's for anything other than trades or OHC's as they tend to sag in the middle
If you go to Amazon and a book is only available from third-party sellers at a higher price than cover price, then that's out of print. If it's available on Amazon for cover or less that's a sign it's still in print
The world's greatest superheroes you really need the absolute format to get the most benefit of its amazing art. Absolute transmetropolitan is worth every penny too. The trade quality is too poor and there is no omni. The watchmen I'm tempted to buy the absolute from time to time... Others I'm contended with omni or deluxe.
I think you're right about Transmet, I jumped on that the minute it came out. I'm just not sure the story is for everyone. But what the heck do I know lol?!?!?
I read the issues of All Star Superman and thought it was just okay. I still have the tpb of Dark Knight and avoided both sequels (plural). Finally, I have an 2008 HC of Watchmen and wonder what slight upgrade is worth it? The DC Black Label of Watchmen of this year or something else??? -- Matthew
Frank Quitely's art is great... for 2000 AD. To me, it looks weird on Superman or the JLA. I don't mean it as a disrespect. Some of my favorite Judge Dredd artists (Henry Flint, for example) would look out of place drawing mainstream American superheroes.
As a young reader of comics who came to them in recent years, I absolutely can't stand Dark Knight Returns. I know it was incredibly influential and groundbreaking for its time and all that, but without the nostalgia bias for me it reads exactly as bad as Miller's other, more universally disliked stuff. Full of hateful attitude, machismo and bad characterisation, this book has pretty much all the same things that people hated so much about Zack Snyder's movies. And Miller's art is really ugly, too, but that's subjective as you said, to me it just doesn't look any better than in Dark Knight Strikes Again or any other book of his. Just my opinion, and I know it's a wildly unpopular one, but I'd never recommend this book to new comics readers at all.

@symbiote007 I have the Graphitti edition. I decided to keep that and I gave the Absolute to a friend.
I think the Absolute Preacher volumes are a bit better in terms of build and design but Sandman is a close 2nd.

Nobody doesn’t *not* like the art of Hush. Jim Lee is a national treasure. The Absolute format of Hush makes it a must-have.

Dark Knight Returns is great, it's Dark Knight Strikes Again that's so awful lol. I'm keeping my WW Absolutes, FYI. I like the art on as big a format as possible for this book.
@@OmnidogsVault oops, I meant Dark Knight Strikes Again was morbid curiosity, not for Dark Knight Returns (I did read it and it was great). Thank you for the WW feedback. I think i'll save up for those two. My wife did like the Absolute formats of the Alex Ross books, so they just might work.

I got the Deluxe Edition of All Star Superman and i just ordered the absolute of all star superman i felt it's well worth the double dip lol

I have a Titanium Edition of Marvels but I had to buy the deluxe so I could actually read it again lol!!

How do you feel about the Sandman Absolutes? I personally went for the 3 Compendiums but I got the Death Absolute and honestly I'm thinking about getting the Absolutes...

Great video Jess! I was on the fence about Justice and it's pretty cheap locally right now so I think I'll pull the trigger and get it. My one question was what about the Leob/Sale Batman Absolutes, Long Halloween, Dark Victory and Haunted are they worth owning in absolute? I have Long Halloween and Dark Victory I can still get but it's out of print. Oddly enough the first Absolute I owned was the Watchman as a wedding gift. But I don't think I've ever read that copy I always read my trade. Thanks for a great video.
I meant to address the Loeb/Sale omni. I think that's an omni I'd buy and avoid the Absolutes due to the costs of the Absolutes. Thanks for watching!!
OMG Jess you're right. I've been too focused lately on getting that Absolute Dark Victory that I completely forgot about he Omni. For some reason I kept thinking it was cancelled like the rest (even though it's been out for a while). Man I need a vacation.

I was never much of a Watchmen guy, was before my time (read it once and enjoyed it though). But I was there for Kingdom Come and that book is my personal Watchmen. A masterpiece of written word and painted art.

If you love the art, then yes. My opinion is that Absolutes are for stories that are great with art that is outstanding!

from Ikea I use Kallax and the narrow Billy's and Absolutes fit fine on those. I wouldn't use the wider Billy's for anything other than trades or OHC's as they tend to sag in the middle

If you go to Amazon and a book is only available from third-party sellers at a higher price than cover price, then that's out of print. If it's available on Amazon for cover or less that's a sign it's still in print

The world's greatest superheroes you really need the absolute format to get the most benefit of its amazing art.
Absolute transmetropolitan is worth every penny too. The trade quality is too poor and there is no omni.
The watchmen I'm tempted to buy the absolute from time to time...
Others I'm contended with omni or deluxe.
I think you're right about Transmet, I jumped on that the minute it came out. I'm just not sure the story is for everyone. But what the heck do I know lol?!?!?

I read the issues of All Star Superman and thought it was just okay. I still have the tpb of Dark Knight and avoided both sequels (plural). Finally, I have an 2008 HC of Watchmen and wonder what slight upgrade is worth it? The DC Black Label of Watchmen of this year or something else??? -- Matthew

Frank Quitely's art is great... for 2000 AD. To me, it looks weird on Superman or the JLA. I don't mean it as a disrespect. Some of my favorite Judge Dredd artists (Henry Flint, for example) would look out of place drawing mainstream American superheroes.

As a young reader of comics who came to them in recent years, I absolutely can't stand Dark Knight Returns. I know it was incredibly influential and groundbreaking for its time and all that, but without the nostalgia bias for me it reads exactly as bad as Miller's other, more universally disliked stuff. Full of hateful attitude, machismo and bad characterisation, this book has pretty much all the same things that people hated so much about Zack Snyder's movies. And Miller's art is really ugly, too, but that's subjective as you said, to me it just doesn't look any better than in Dark Knight Strikes Again or any other book of his. Just my opinion, and I know it's a wildly unpopular one, but I'd never recommend this book to new comics readers at all.
