Shohei Ohtani is the worldwide face of baseball. For people who aren't really interested in following baseball, he may be the only name they know. He's like the Michael Jordan of baseball.
Padres got four potential starters and a solid defensive catcher. Thorpe’s numbers in the minors are incredible. If Soto isn’t extended, that’s a scary, rough trade for NY. As you mentioned, good for both teams.
Never knew Trevor May had a UA-cam channel, really cool guy! Will definitely become a subscriber. Last memory I have of of him was Judge hitting a yack to tie the game during the subway series
Enjoyed this reaction and breakdown. Yes to more and I know ya just retired and deserve a break from ball but I would be interested to see your in season thoughts and reactions to things in the upcoming year as they play out. Blueberry is an all time flavor and blueberry muffins are all time muffins. Had a blueberry bagel for breakfast. Fuck yes.
Hey, you being a Northwest guy, do you have any sort of weigh-in on the whole Mariners payroll situation? Sure seems like they could have used an extra bullpen arm down the stretch this last year.
It's a lot to wrap our heads around. I get that he's a once in a century talent but the amount of money is... staggering. That said, if ownership is that profitable, then players (the product) should get their share of the pie. meanwhile I'm just over here trying to get by in life on a budget where inflation doesn't ruin me. Blueberry muffins and polite request for some cat cameos in future videos!
I think Ohtani allowing his team to be the only team in the league to carry 14 pitchers is also important. Especially for a team like the Dodgers who goes heavy with the bullpen. I wonder how much teams would be willing to pay just for an extra pitching spot?
As a business it makes sense. And as a team trying to win the World Series, it makes sense. So you make the deal and Ohtani signs it because Southern California is warmer than pretty much any other place in the country. But make no mistake: it doesn’t guarantee the Dodgers anything other than the NL West which they won by 16 games over the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season. Of course, maybe now they can win the NL West by 25 games.
@@Massachamp08lol cut the shit bro. There isn’t one single ownership group worth less than shohei, those guys are worth billions. The game doesn’t need a salary cap, cheap owners need to spend. The real issue is the fact that some of your richest owners field the worst teams with the lowest payrolls. Thats the real issue. They use the teams for tax breaks instead of actual caring about the game.
I wouldn’t trade blueberry muffins for 10 prospects but I think the Yanks and Padres both came out looking good on this one. Obviously the Yanks get their guy and that’s huge for them, but Padres getting King and several other serviceable arms isn’t too shabby.
Sad the mets couldnt land ohtani but lets face it we havent won squat in 40 years and our weather sucks half the year. Also theres so much pressure playing in NY. booberry muffins
Blueberry Muffins. This is a silly game haha How Ridiculous does a “44 Club” for the peeps who stick to the end of the viddys, your code words remind me of that.
I’m glad my Cubs missed out on both sweepstakes I’d prefer Soto join through free-agency rather than trade for a year of service And Ohtani would hav outpriced the rest of the offseason
If Shohei ends up not being able to pitch anymore 2 or 3 seasons into the deal. It becomes the worst contract in sports history. It’s only thing to pay for an Ace and a Power Bat, but if he’s no longer a pitcher and you end up paying all that money for a bat. However I am sure they probably have a safety in the contract just in case that happens.
BLUEBERRY MUFFINS!! Side question do you think the blue jays ever had a shot at Ohtani (toronto fans were literally tracking a plane that Shohei wasn't even on) or was it just a fluke from Ohtani to get more money from the dodgers?
Blueberry Muffins. I might sound old school but I think the Ohtani contract is bad for baseball. For a team to spending more money on 1 player than multiple teams whole payroll is not good for the health of the league. We already have issues with teams not trying to be competitive. What choice do they have now, they can't compete at all with that kind of money.
As a long time Yankees fans I was excited to acquire Soto in a trade, but I was wondering how much it would cost to keep him. I was thinking between 450 to 500 should do it, but after Dodgers insane signing has just thrown MLB salaries into madness. I'm seriously IDC how good you might think Ohtani is worth, he is NOT worth 70 mil a yr! I like when players get paid, but not to the ridiculous amount of money the Dodgers just handed out. Last season I believe Judge had the largest contract in FA 390 million a year later Dodger give a 700 million how does that even make sense! Is Ohtano more than 300 million better than Judge? That's a HELL NO! Some owners should be put in baseball confinement! MLB is going to need to repair salary structure , I mean really next yr I was hoping Yankees can sign Soto and now all I can see is Boras rubbing his hands with a huge smile asking 10 yrs for 900 million and YES! that's how ridiculous this all is!
@laartwork -That has very little to do with it. The business is winning baseball games. The real question is what do you know about baseball? The Dodgers are going to look silly, just like the Angels, if this doesn't work. The real question is are big contracts the way to win the Worid Series, and it's a fair question.
@@qazymanWith the fact Shohei just had Tommy John Surgery, I feel personally like the Angels already got the best out of him. The thing I worry about the most in this whole deal is that the Dodgers are doing an insane deferred payment plan for his contract, and I seriously worry that the Dodgers might also be doing this to match Shohei's contract for Juan Soto and buy him next year too. It simply won't even be remotely fair for other teams if this happens, and MLB needs to prevent that at all costs.
@@Massachamp08 I agree. But look at the Angels. They invested a major fortune to surround him with the best players in the league. Trout, Redone, Pujols, and made the playoffs once. 700 million can buy a mile of depth and quality. Something the Dodgers aren't likely to have.
@@laartwork Yeah I;m sorry I don't buy that Ohtani pays for himself crap! We the fans ends up paying for it, businesses are NOT in the habit to lose profit! Otherwise do would not be in business long!
I always scratch my head when 2 players from the same team are finalists for MVP. Wouldn't that mean they aren't the "most" if they have another? 😅 Blueberry muffins
I'm going to throw this out there....would it make sense spreading Mookie, Freddie and Ohtani in spots 3, 6 and 9? There's only so many runs they could knock in if they were stacked 2,3,4. One of them will get the RBIs while 1 of the other 2 will lose RBIs hitting all 3 in a row ... I think they could generate more runs spread out....just thinking outside the box
Pretty sure no one wants one of the biggest stars in baseball having 1 fewer at bat per game. Welcome to being a new baseball spectator. I hope you enjoy it.
@@laartwork That's the only way you're going to squeeze out more runs. He's just replacing JD Martinez in the lineup. Say Betts and Freeman replicate their same seasons and the hitting order stays intact. That means Muncy and Shohei are only going to just barely break 100 RBIs. ...only so many runs to go around regardless who the player is hitting in that lineup spot. Shohei's impact on the team will be in merch and ad revenue more than the on field impact run production.
I'm very happy, hoping this will help further increase player salaries, especially higher end ones. Maybe it will also shame teams like the Yankees, Mets, and others to spend even more
I am very concerned about the precedent this sets for the game of baseball. The Dodgers have done nothing but spend billions to do fuck all when it matters and choke every year in the playoffs, and hogging the free agent pool and simply pricing everybody out to where teams simply can't compete with them on spending. And no, I don't want to hear the excuse of, "well all the other owners need to spend like them", because not every team is the exact same market or net worth as the Dodgers or Yankees, and expecting every single MLB team to just be a charity like the Dodgers have been for players is not realistic, nor does it set a good example. And plus we already know Ohtani is injured and unable to pitch for a year or two. I don't think it's fair at all that one team can just stack themselves this much especially when they always choke every year, and part of me thinks the Angels already got the best out of him. I anticipate my comment getting flamed into oblivion but this is just my honest thoughts on the matter. The more I think about it, the more I realize the 1994 strike was a mistake and that MLB knew what was coming.
🧁 I don't know if that's a blueberry muffin, but here we are. I only bring this up because I think it matters to you: the audio sync seems off for me? At any rate, I love your videos keep up the great work!
Tigers could have afforded him. The Illitch Family is on the Forbes Top 50 Billionaires, but unfortunately junior doesnt give as much as of a shit about the city as his Dad did.
His AAV is MORE than 8 major league teams... Their ENTIRE mlb rosters! 8 teams total rosters as less than one players aav! Let that sink in!
Yeah think about how much more those teams can put into their teams
That’s the owners fault
It’s deferred money so it’s not gonna be 70 mil a year
yea that seems like those franchises should pull their head out of their ass lmao

I am happy for him and he’s the man. However, I’m concerned on the precedent this sets. He’s guaranteed more than some owners are worth

Good for Shohei and the Dodgers 🙃
