- Justin Lewis, a former F-14 and A-10 driver, has updated his homebuilt BD-5 with the help of FLSMicrojet. He was invited to perform at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2013 and, with sponsorship from US Fleet Tracking (www.USFleetTrac...), brought "the world's smallest jet" back to experimental aviation's biggest stage.
Still a massive fan of this design since reading about it in Popular Mechanics all those years ago! And of course Bond... ;-)
Perfect! It's an awesome resurrection of the original Bede Jet! Great seeing it fly.
Great interview. I saw him perform at New Garden Pa and he was very pleasant to talk to as well. There was a Honda powered prop BD-5 there as well.
That does look fun.
Jim bede would be proud of you guys.
Bravo! Great presentation. As the former program manager for the Coors Light Silver Bullets I'm excited to see the enhancements and excitement the BD5's legend brings. Can't wait to see more.
You fueled part of my flight dreams, too. Thank you for the sweetest of memories.
Definitely an inspiration. Thanks for the video, guys!
WOW, that’s the biggest RC plane I’ve ever seen. And it can carry people. Except that this one has the avionics with a pilot seat instead of the remote control electronics.
Air Guard after his active service in the Navy. We had a few Army guard Heli pilots that were former Navy A-4 drivers. Fun guys to talk to. :)
On the plus side, Martin-Baker is coming out with some (relatively) lightweight ejection seats... ZOOM!
This is so amazingly cool. I've owned sportbikes that weigh more than this jet airplane. Wow...
What a great guy ! great 5 !
That's a nice finish that silver.
i wonder how it compares to the Subsonex jet
It's 100 miles an hour faster, for one.
Interesting mention about landing it. I've heard my glider instructor mention a few times to transitioning powered pilots that they will flare too early since you are low in a glider.
Learning to fly a glider can be a real benefit to being a powered flight pilot.
Nicely done 👍🇺🇸
It's beautiful plane!
I have done a great number of things in my life however I think I have found the next great thing I want to accomplish at my age in life.....
Too cool
Does this aircraft have the Riblett wing profile ? It was added to some -5s but if added after the wing was complete, it had to be re-profiled with foam and glass. Was this wing built from scratch with the Riblett profile ? Current issue of Kitplanes has an article about Riblett, [RIP] and it briefly explains the -5 airfoil problem. Ribletts book has a fuller description of the problem and solution.
You retire from the navy or don't re-enlist, latter most likely, then enlist in air national guard. That's how you go from F-14's to A-10's...
From jets to helicopters? That's a big switch. My Army Guard unit (89-93) was an attack heli battalion; a bunch of our pilots were Vietnam guys.
He said he went from F-14's to A-10's. An A-10 is not a helicopter, it is a tank killing jet aircraft that excels at low level flight.
Recently a BD-5 kit jet sold in Michigan. Unfortunately no jet engine
What a guy. :)
hola amigo esta hermoso tu avion saludos
hello about F-14 from usa im taker amny years in watter landing air pout ship please usa this can your writng on detals i hav this logo on in JET ENGR FROM USA
Is this jet expensive?
I saw a B1rd once
95% Justin talking. 5% aircraft flying. Maybe.
Where can I buy one
Could you put the BD-5 down on an aircraft carrier?
I want one!
Curious to know how a former navy Tomcat pilot is flying an A-10 now?
He was active in the Navy... and joined the Air National Guard as a reservist. In the reserves, pilots will go job hunting and any guard base can "hire" anyone they want to, including across military branches.
Is there any way you could make this look like a F22
What is the range and fuel economy like? Landing speed? Landing distance?
Short
Breathtaking
Breathtaking
Long
Cool. Still think James Bond first every time!
Oh cool, the Octopussy jet reinvented :D
I want one too. were can I buy one?
Daniel Maloney on FB you can find our group expiremental aircraft bd-5
how i can buy this airline from india
What airline ? 🧐
My go-kart weighs more than this thing
Air National Guard
The BD-5J has killed quite a few experienced pilots per 1,000 flight hours. =:O
There might be a limit to how small a jet can be and/or how little wing area it can get by with.
PS: Lewis & Clark, arr, arr, arr... ;')
The plane crashing isn't due to the design and or wing surface area. It's mostly due to pilot error or being under-powered.
@@christopherrogers6194 wrong, the design played a major role . That's why the FAA refused to certify them in earlier days when Jim was working on getting it certified
if this jet has so bad fame of crushes due to engine failures... why none is talking about replaing with other safer well known engines?
The original snowmobile engine was failure prone. This is the jet version. It was made a jet to overcome these issues. Turbines rarely fail.
So, it is an LSA 😭
320 mph = LSA???
@@josephc.9520 No, but it could be a motorglider
Yawn, don't think much of the five minute roll rate...
Where did Bob Bishop get off to?
