Karl telling you how he would never do this for a client. But meticulously shows you the lighting problems he facing with the one light. And goes in showing how you can solve that problem with mirrors. Just to be aware. Every mirror is a different light source. All the different light problems he’s talking about and the fixes is his level of skill and professionalism.
Started my photography journey about 14 years ago with Karl's DVDs. In 2024 this man never stops impressing me. Well done mate. Congrats on the growth and a big thank you!
I've watched this video earlier but today again I watched this video because I love the way Karl represents his working skills. Undoubtedly, Visual Education is the best photography education platform in the world.
Just watching the video, I got some tips on reflective services. May get some more stuff during the fall or spring to practice with. Thanks for the tips.
Awesome Tutorial Sir. Just Superb... I have one question. At 8:28 minutes into the video there is a small dark reflection of the card on the shiny rim of the vertical lipstick, that disappears later. How did it go away?
My first thought was another mirror, but dragging the shutter for 45 seconds, I didn't think of. In hind site, a mirror would not have given the clean gradation you had. What was the ratio from key to back, 1 to 3? Love your work.
Karl is the best in the business, if you haven’t already I would seriously recommend looking at buying his course because like this tutorial, his a freaking genius
very very good! lots of creativity for bits and pieces youve mentioned ACRYLIC mirrors in the past but in lots and lots of looking, i cant find any plain rectangular acrylic mirrors. Lowes nope. home depot nope. amazon nope... whats a good source for them?
I really like this course! This episode makes it very difficult not to join Visual Education platform. I hope it will take me from zero to hero in photography technique.
Is there any real benefit in long exposure though over taking 2 separate exposures and combining them in post. The only one that comes to mind is having it as a single file but not that beneficial over gathering more noise and having to move things around during exposure time for every shot you want to make.
In this instance you could have photographed the background light as a separate shot as it would have no impact on the first stage of lighting but in other instances where you may have wanted to light the product with the same light used multiple times on the product itself during a long exposure then that would be more difficult to accomplish as separate images and blend in post, the reason is that the blending is more natural if it's in camera on the same exposure. It can be done in post on separate layers if the areas being lit are quite specific and separate. Last week on our platform I demonstrated this on the BMW motorcycle shoot on one of our live shows.
Very good lesson, but please show your camera-assistant how to focus his cam. Even a simple mirrorless a7IV has the possibilitiy to use eye-autofocus. I am filming with sony FX6, FX30 and nikon Z8 and even if you dont want to use AF-C, a little tap with your finger on the backscreen is enough to tell the camera on wich point to focus in the frame. By the way, the best option is to pull focus manually, but this needs a little bit of practice. But not to focus is no option in such a professional photography lesson. On the older DVDs this was no issue.
This is a brilliant "proof of concept". 👏👏 But there are so many steps, so many tripods and accessories needed, that in the end it is cheaper, more practical and faster to buy another light source (whatever it may be).
That long exposure trick, so good...
Bloody genius!! 📸
I appreciate your generous free tutorials on this channel.

whats a good source for them?
Sign manufacturers or plastic suppliers
Hey Karl. What is the obvious disadvantage of using speedlites over other strobes? As you said you'd never using them for a client shoot.
There is no adequate modelling lamp on a speedlite for you to preview the shape of what the light will look like. And they're often less powerful.
bro that's too complicate to be real but it's so cool. you the best
👏👏👏
I really like this course! This episode makes it very difficult not to join Visual Education platform. I hope it will take me from zero to hero in photography technique.
This is just 0.001% of the gold nuggets on our platform
