OK this is what you gonna do:
    1) Make your external ssd or hdd a free space: For Windows you can use Partition Manager or if you don't have any os in your computer you can boot gparted to a usb and use it for making free space.
    2) The installation process is pretty straightforward: Press next for every window (don't forget to tick the graphic cards)
    3) When you come to the disk selection part choose 'Something Else'. Then create two partiotions in your free external device (ssd or hdd): First -> swap area(Logical, end of space, 8 gb), Second: ext4 file system (primary, beginning of space, remaining part of your external disk, mount point is "/")
    4) Press next and finish the installation.
    5) Enjoy!

Thanks for making this video. After about a year of running Linux Mint MATE successfully on a USB stick, I was ready to commit an entire Hard Drive to the OS.
But, knowing Linux, I expected this to be a clumsy and awkward operation. Your step-by-step explanation made it all nice and clear, and simple, and I now have a brand new Linux Mint 17.2 hard drive which is working just fine.
Like your video, mine also will boot right into Windows 7 if I so choose.
There may be other tutorials out there, but yours is a tutorial that made sense to me and actually worked.
    Thanks again!

Worked around the problem, taking inspiration from this video. To have a working linux OS on removable external drive, I installed another Debian OS on a little partition on the internal drive, FOR LAST. This last OS provides the GRUB table and recognizes all the previously installed external OSs, if they are connected. Then, it works even with all the ext. drives disconnected. If You try to access a disconnected OS GRUB simply displays "no external disk found", and get back to the menu. Thanks Lenny!

hi the video is great, however i am facing the following issues: I am using a ventoy drive which i created on a usb which contains the linux mint -cinnamon ISO. I booted successfully into Linux mint. I ran all the commands as detailed by you successfully. The identified partition is on windows :97gb /vol 6/ Letter U/ Raw which is sdc4 on linux. The installer began and i selected the partition sdc4 , however it gave an "Error - operation not permitted during write on /dev/mapper/ventoy" - what to do ??

If you're struggling to mount an ISO onto your HDD then how have you ever installed Windows or Mac via USB? You need to install the bare bones of Linux onto your hard drive which is what you see right now.

    • @colm9419

    • @kevincioffi9115

+Colm Mathews Right, but in this instance he’s assuming that you know how to mount Linux to your hard drive. You don’t need to install Linux to run it. You can use Linux without having it fully installed. This is why I said you need to know how to install the barebones of Linux, if you can’t mount it to your hard drive then perhaps moving onto other projects such as Raspberry Pi might be a better idea until you’ve got the right idea.

I installed peppermint os on a usb stick. It booted and worked great on my dell with win 10 on it. I put the same usb on my i mac with corrupted hard drive and it would not boot however the i mac would boot the iso for peppermint on the usb. So for giggles I installed Manjaro xfce on the usb however I let the calmares installer do the automatic install and it works perfectly on the i mac with the dead hard drive. I noticed when Calmares did the install it added one extra very small boot-loader partion to it. I believe don't quote me because it was a week ago it was a 3 mib uefi partion. I have not used Manjarro in a couple of years but I am very impressed that calmares created a persistent usb automatically and yes I tried to do it automatically with peppermint and it did not work on the dell and I Mac. However my Manjarro usb done by calmares works on both machines.

WARNING: Followed exactly the steps in this tutorial. I'm 1000% sure, I selected the external drive as "device for bootloader installation" but nevertheless my windows bootloader got overwritten with grub on my internal drive! F*ck, thank you man! Was able to fix it like this: askubuntu.com/questions/429610/uninstall-grub-and-use-windows-bootloader
Installed distribution was linux mint ulyana xfce edition, internal drive was listed as /dev/nvme..., external drive as /dev/sdb.
As far as I understand the askubuntu writing, the grub stuff was installed into the EFI folder in the system partition of the drive (so not really boot sector but something with UEFI).

Really great tutorial!! I want to install Ubuntu on a TerraMaster F4-220, which has no exit for a monitor (I have ordered an adapter cable, but it is a long way from China, LOL). You can connect an USB drive with the firmware to the internal USB plug of the NAS. Before I get access to the NAS I install Ubuntu to an external drive and plug it afterwards to the NAS. The rest can be done over the network.
Very important is your remark to inhibit overwriting the other disks. Espacially the swap partitions will be overwritten, if you do not exclude them separately. I could find no solution for this problem and stopped installation when I saw, that the swap partition of other drives would be formatted. GOOD JOB, THANKS!!

Is there any way I can put the installer on the hard drive to make it go faster? My install of mint takes forever, and it even takes a long time to format hte ext4 partitions? Would putting on hard drive make this faster? Is my USB 3.0 stick not a good stick for EXT4?

how can i install kali on a external usb stick. I have an usb stick of 64 gb and i try installing kali though another pendrive on that 64gb pendrive by using it as one of the drives in "choose disk" option. Every time it installs grub and all the files but during boot it dose not boot. In kali 2020.1 it gives a black screen with cursor blinking in kali 2019.4 it gives "tty1" loop error all the comands such as update, upgrade startx dose not work as bash error and in kali 2018.4 it boots and work (after setting grub nouvemau.modeset=0 due to nvidia driver )but after updating it stops working with white screen and a face saying some kernal problem and report to administrator please help

To be honest, I tried Linux for the first time last year on November, and I actually liked and disliked it at the same time. While I did overall enjoy the positive aspects, I sadly cannot access my external, Samsung PSSD T7 drive, (in other words, view the files I've stored inside) since its incompatible with Linux and there is no Linux version for VideoProc yet.

I know you love the XFCE desktop. I've been wondering what are the perks you love about about it? Also I've been having a problem that I looking for answers too. I do a lot of editing mp3 files in audacity. I take a bunch of them and batch load them into separate audacity windows. While I'm waiting for them to load up, I want to go to a different workspace and browse the Internet. But audacity will start loading up into my new workspace. Is there a fix for this?

The reason I enjoy XFCE is because I can eliminate screen tearing by using a special startup command involving my nvidia card, and I don't need compton. Therefore XFCE's built in compositor can still be used, giving me the benefit of it's tranparency settings, etc.

Len I'm using a nvidia card GM107 [GeForce GTX 750 Ti] and currently I'm still using compton to make the panel transparent. I have both Force Composition and Force Full Compostion Pipeline saved in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. I the vertical screen tearing is ok but not the horizontal. When I scroll up and down the screen tears. What do you do about that?

Thanks Len for another useful video. I presume the same procedure could be used to put Arch or Manjaro (Mate) on an external USB device. Thank you.

Hello, after going through the whole process as shown my drive will no show up on the boot menu, and also it wont show up as a drive when I boot onto windows as normal. If I go to do the process again and re -install on the drive it will recognize the drive.
