Everyone who says Raul shouldn't be here should never watch again. Brilliant shooting and heading technique. Teamwork. A gentleman in and out of pitch. A role model for all
Surprised to see Raul at number one could have been any of these players that weren't even included. Xavi, Paolo Maldini, Brian Laudrup, Peter Schmeichel, Johan Neeskens and Steven Gerrard. There are also the players that had little to no playtime in Europe such as Pele, Zico, Socrates, Maradona and Garrincha
I don't know if this is true but back in the day, there were two separate awards, one for the best player in the world (world player of the year) and one for the best player in Europe (ballon d'or). That may be why Pele and Co didn't get into the video. Not sure about Maradona and I'm surprised he hasn't won it. Correct me if I'm wrong
+arsenalally1 It's interesting to see that you mentioned Brian Laudrup, because the thing that I always liked about him was that he was the "less appraised" Laudrup. Michael never won the Ballon d'Or either even though he was successful at both Barca and Real, whereas Brian is remembered mostly for his time with Rangers.
+Sid Iyer He didn't win it because the Ballon d'or was only open to European born players. It was basically an award for "Best European player" and not "Best player in Europe). It stayed like that till 1995 when it was opened to all players playing in a European league, regardless of nationality.
@@mo2k638 Statistics don't prove anything. Nedved carried Juventus to the UCL final and Shevchenko pretty much destroyed every team in Europe from 1999 to 2005. Henry always disappeared in big European matches
+Froggen88 not literally of course. The Netherlands probably flew by aeroplane to South Africa, and that was probably piloted by a professionally trained pilot.
S Gerrard? Quite possibly the most complete footballer of the modern era. He could do anything required to win the match. I remember the 06 World Cup, where Gerrard had been registered in 6 different positions from CF to RB. This is when he was regarded the best player in the game, right after the infamous CL Final against Milan. He should've won the ballon d'or that year without a doubt.
+Trailer .HD "S Gerrard? Quite possibly the most complete footballer of the modern era" Grade A trolling , Alonso made Gerrard look good . Gerrard was a fucking flop in england team
panzer9248 LOL coming from a guy who called gerrard the most complete player in modern era........ Gerrard is a decent player nothng more or less plus he flopped big time with england
Marko Kacoli I am a bit biased as I hate Barcelona, but I always thought Iniesta was the really world class one of the two. Much more talented and versatile than Xavi.
Xavi never had one specifically brilliant year, although consistently world class, there were always 3 or 4 players who had a better year than him. This list is partly considering people who actually came really close to winning it
***** I always thought he was a bit overrated, everyone everywhere raves about Xavi all the time. He was a great player, but the hype has built up so much even now after leaving Barcelona, that you start to think he almost didn't justify it
Maldini, Casillas, Schmeichel, Xavi, Baresi, Kahn, Cantona, Hagi, Riijkaard, Pirlo, Scholes. Just a list of players who deserve to be on this list more than Bernd Schuster.
Maldini, Gerrard, Lampard, Vieira, Giggs, Zoff, Banks, Rijkaard, Baresi, Kahn, Koeman, Pirlo, Laudrup, Neeskens I at least expected a couple of these guys in there... Also, because the Ballon D'or used to be Europe exclusive the likes of Garrincha, Pele, Santos, da Guia, Cea weren't even allowed to win it so I'd have expected some of these names in there
+Tuomas Saarinen Incorrect. Buffon has been a brick wall for the past 21 years, he has won everything there is to win and even at 37 he is an outstanding keeper. Casillas had 10 unbelievable years for Real and Spain and he won everything as well but age has gotten the better of him and he has severely deteriorated in form. He is also younger than Buffon and is not playing at Buffon's standard. Don't get me wrong; Buffon and Casillas are 2 of the greatest keepers of all time, but Buffon is better than Casillas.
james mottershead bundesliga a joke? First of all a lot of these players were from the bundesliga, plus bundesliga is better than let's say for example serie a and bpl atm. Only La Liga is better so you're basically saying all leagues are a joke except for la liga
How on earth Alessandro Del Piero is not on this list? He brought Juve to 3 consecutive european cup finals (one UEFA Cup and 2 Champions League Cups one of which won by Juve) on the period from 1994 to 1996. He scored the decisive goals in 1996 UEFA Super Cup and 1996 Intercontinental Cup (both won by Juve). He was a complete, unstoppable player that produced a massive amount of goals and assists and he was just a joy to watch. Not to mention that a particular way to score was named after him during those years. He arrived 4th for Ballon D'Or two consecutive times in 1995 and 1996 (6th or lower during other years but always nominated) and both times the winners were ridiculously unworthy compared to him... At least that's definitely the case for the edition of 1996 when Matthias Sammer won it... I mean, really? Sammer was better than Del Piero? Especially in 1996? Based on the motivations used in this video he deserved a Ballon D'Or more than Thierry Henry and at least as much as Raul.
+Niccolo Oresto but giggs also had to win with scholes Beckham and many others since the whole united team in 1998-99 was too great but none of them won the ballon d'or.

king zlatan ibrahimovic.. what he has done throughout he's career is amazing and the fact that he's over 30 and still continuing to be world class is unbelievable.
Jari Litmanen in 1995 for ajax, he was the top scorer for them, he won CL, Eredivisie without losing a match, Dutch super cup, Intercontinental cup and European super cup in same year, he only came third after Klinsmann and Weah
Pirlo. That man can curve a free kick better than anyone else. Along with him in his prime, the god couldn't be stopped. Could play a ball on a pin, along with a few nifty tricks under his boot!!
People regularly fail to acknowledge or recognise Henry's assists!!! He still holds the premier league assists record!!! A striker with the premier league assists record!!! He was selfless! Won every trophy. Won the European golden boot consecutively! He used to get 15 plus assists a season!!! As well as 30 plus goals
Ibrahimovic should have been there. He is one of the world's best player ever. Not so many footballers could/can control the ball like him, plus his height is definitely making it harder for him-making him a hardworker. Scoring over 280 goals in his career(over 341 if national team is counted), which many of them were long shots or his magnificent free kicks. I'd like to mention his 35 yard overhead kick against England, too. Not so many people could do that.
+Smit Vaidya totti scored over 300 goals for AS Roma...kenny dalglish only had one or two good seasons for liverpool...please don't tell me that dalglish was better than players like klose, del piero, inzaghi, maradona etc...
+Adrian Musat Hagi, maradona, and pele (and others, eg puskas) didnt win it not because of biased fans etc, but simply because it didn't exist when the played lol. Also, fans have absolutely no say in the Balon d'Or
What about iker cassilas? Has At Least won of these trophies if not more. Has won copa del rey, la liga, champion league, world cup, euros, club world cup, Uefa super cup, and super copa. And some of those he won more then once
In my lifetime, Henry, Xavi, Iniesta, Maldini are the ones that deserved but never won. Maldini due to bias against defenders, Xavi, Iniesta due to Messi, but Thierry Henry due to pure stupid choices. In 2003-2004 Henry was red hot. Ok, Nedved had a good season with Juventus but Henry was lethal, a beast.
+realistic man Messi was out for 2 months so he should automatically be excluded from the shortlist. Yes, he had a great year but he was definitely not the best player of the year. He hasn't played a full calendar year so why should he be in the shortlist for best player of the calendar year? Speaking of exclusions, why on earth was Buffon not on the shortlist but Ospina was?
Deathly Badger thats just make his year all the more great...out for 2 months and still only 3 goals behind cr7 and 8 assists more..... also all the trophies and to make it to copa america final, uefa best player, espy best player and all the other individual awards....so ya kindly fuck off

But as said in the video sometimes people don't appreciate goalkeeper as we should. In the end, great video :)
Actually in past decade just 2 players dominated football so much that many greats couldn't get that much recognition that they deserve..MESSI, RONALDO just out of the class and established their own class which in past decade noone able to match or come close
If anyone says that Sneijder should be on here, then you're also saying that Ribery should be on here as well. They both won the treble but were beaten by Messi and Ronaldo, respectively. The Ballon d'or is an individual award, and individually Sneijder wasn't better than Messi in 2010.
How could you not include Ibrahimovic, he has won more trophies than Messi and Ronaldo and he has won the league for every team he has played for except Malmö. He buries PSG and he is so underrated, how had he not even been in top3 candidate.
Michael Laudrup, Iniesta himself said that Laudrup was the best player never to win a Balon D'Or
Couldn't agree more👍
I was thinking the same thing. Laudrop was phenomenal
Yea both of them
True
Laudrup was without a doubt one of the best playmakers ever. However, Raul getting snubbed in 2001 is still the most absurd Ballon d'Or.

But as said in the video sometimes people don't appreciate goalkeeper as we should. In the end, great video :)
I'm not saying he should be in the top 5, but Nándor Hidegkuti needs to be in there at some point
+Jason Button His goal record is superb but he did not play at a high enough level domestically to warrant the best player in the world imo
+divkid28 the Hungarian league was pretty strong and played the best national teams around, they were much stronger than club teams in those days
JAMMMIEEEE VAAARRRRDDDYY
Xavi, Maldini, Baresi, Michael Laudrup, Del Piero, Pirlo...
why did u put Michael Owen is that picture, he won it as an Liverpool player
Actually in past decade just 2 players dominated football so much that many greats couldn't get that much recognition that they deserve..MESSI, RONALDO just out of the class and established their own class which in past decade noone able to match or come close
If anyone says that Sneijder should be on here, then you're also saying that Ribery should be on here as well. They both won the treble but were beaten by Messi and Ronaldo, respectively. The Ballon d'or is an individual award, and individually Sneijder wasn't better than Messi in 2010.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic😍😍 you have mist
You got this idea from the Football Daily comment section!😂😭 How original!
Xavi, Pirlo, & Maldini should have all made this list
Most are defenders , or should be , but defenders dont get the credit they deserve
why werent totti, del piero and maldini mentioned?
Petr Cech won chelsea the CL in 2012 and barely got mentioned
Michael Laudrup. The mind of Pep guardiola's barca side.
How could you not include Ibrahimovic, he has won more trophies than Messi and Ronaldo and he has won the league for every team he has played for except Malmö. He buries PSG and he is so underrated, how had he not even been in top3 candidate.
