- In the history of the PlayStation, there have been 3 big hit titles that began as a very different game. #1) Activision's Apocalypse, #2) Capcom's Resident Evil 2, and #3) Pac-Man 3D. The PlayStation Museum has covered Apocalypse and Resident Evil in the past, and now we reveal Namco's original Pac-Man Ghost Zone.
Pac-Man Ghost Zone thrusts our pudgy pal into 14 wacky worlds, each loaded with 3D poly-gonzo thrills. Pac-Man doesn't just eat - he jumps, flies, swims, slides, and rolls in an effort to battle an all-new cast of bad guys and ghosts. Long live the king of game-dom, Pac-Man!

Moral of the story: Never insult Pac-Man. If you do, you’ll be trapped in Bubsy 3D
nooooooo
A sealed fate
I learned my lesson now
Well, even if the boy didn't insult the game, I think that the Ghost Lord still would've tested the Pixel Cannon on him! I wish that this was made into a real game after all, and I think that it can! Several things would have to be changed, especially the controls and the graphics, but the story should definitely remain the same. With some great teamwork and cooperation, I'm sure that Namco will make a wonderful new Pac-Man game for all video game systems, especially the Nintendo Switch! Either that, or there could be a full-length movie based on the Pac-Man series with this story! And it could be from the creators of the Sonic movie that came out last year! Don't you agree? 👸💗💟🌹💐🌸🎀🐱🦄🍰
This game is just a rip off of Bubsy 3-D!!!!
Really glad Pac-Man World got released instead of this. That game wasn't half bad! This looks... similar to Bubsy 3D.....
Just got done watching your review of Pac-Man World not too long ago. Convenient, I suppose.
James I love your vids, I feel like pac man world is better but it still would be cool to see ghost zone except for the bloody tank controls.
Love your vids man. But I have to say one thing that is better than Bubsy 3D. This game has things textured rather than a solid color. At least most of it is.
EDIT: This is why you don't comment until your done with the video. Half the game is textured I see...
😠So am I, those kids were annoying
And we all know how that went!
So the story is basically from what I summarized is
Kid: ok boomer
Pac man: YOU'RE GOING TO BUBSY 3D
Stupid tank controls. :/
Crispy Toast i agree
I love you crispy toast!
It was modelled after Mario 64 and controlled more like the first Tomb Raider. The main reason it was cancelled is because it just didn't feel like Pac-Man. Namco made the right decision in re-designing Pac-Man World, but Ghost Zone had a lot of potential.
Really Namco!!!
There's a chance to be redone as a dlc for pacman world re pac?
The rom ever gonna be released to the public?
Indeed it did. If anything I would love to see someone (either a fan like myself or someone at Namco) try to recreate this game but make it better in terms of controls, and story. Ghost Zone is basically to Namco what the original Toy Story was to Disney.
It is simply intriguing to me that this was originally ment to be what would eventually become Pac-Man world
Possibly the only game that could have competed with Bubsy 3D for "worst 3D Gameplay"
The voices were assumed to be supplied by the development team. The designer remembers providing the voice for the Ghost Lord.
Who is the ghost lord, I wish that I could have meet pac man...
That was for the initial development and dog and pony show. All voices were subject to change.
What is the music in this game!
He wasn't the designer.
@@victoriam.8652 the ghost lord could have been a prototype version of toc man
While I'm sorry most of the development team was fired, I'm really glad this game was scrapped. The tank controls make it look too much like Bubsy 3D, which wasn't very fun to play as a result of the controls. The level designs also really don't fit Pac-Man's style at all. I'm pretty sure this game would've killed any chance of another Pac-Man game afterwards.
Maybe without the tank controls this would've been slightly more fun, but I doubt it.
Still kind of interesting to see though. Wouldn't mind a prototype being leaked. Thanks for sharing!
Daluigi208 shut your ass up bruh it looks like a good game
Mask Gamer Yeah, I don't think anybody wants to hear the opinion of an "epic gamer!!" Seriously, why do 12 year olds keep putting "Gamer" in their username? That shit's not cool anymore.
@@ANTHONYACUNA1 i agree that the game looks good but chill bro why u have to Be mean he is just saying that bc the game was cancelled before the developers could put good graphics and details to the levels due to some of the levels look like they are testing places and have the Super FX chip in (SNES wasnt powerful enough to make 3d Details but it was still a success)
don' t forget about resident evil also known as biohazard it also has tank controls. but I almost this pacman prototype is almost as pacman world but the prototype title is pacman ghost zone.
To be fair the team that was fired kinda had it coming for not doing the real pacman development. So I'm glad we got pacman world instead.

@@moofusgoofus oh...... well, it so happens that I'm working on a series featuring pac man and all his friends, pac man is named pakku and he is a teenage, he lives with his mom and dad and dog, chomp chomp.....
This would have made a great VineSauce if it was real
R.I.P Pac man ghost zone 1996-1997
Studio Gohma It is real, it was just cancelled.
Yep
Darth Vader just chillin in an arcade machine
I can imagine what the lines could of been
"Wha?... Huh? Uh I'm AHHHHH!!!!!!"
This game heavily reminds me of that other travesty, Rascal.
Thank God this was thrown out.
I see the only thing that was kept was the pellet-throwing ability although if I'm not wrong I think the rev-roll was shown in a much earlier uploaded video.
Pacman keeps making the minecraft "OUOH!"
I'm also glad that this was scrapped in favor to Pac-Man World, but what people in the comments doesn't seem to understand is that this was barely a *work in progress* , of course it's gonna look bad as f&@#!
Definitely. What you see is actually eight months of development. We adapted a method the Japanese used. We created place holder art to develop play. That way programmers never had to wait on art. Placeholder was replaced with fully developed art down the road.
Be careful of who you'd call "a bad video game" LOL
Kid: pac man is bad
Ghost Lord: ima trap dis kid in bubsy 3d
The Kid finds the real Pacman and rescues him. This game had great potential. What you are seeing is early, early work. One of the first progress videos. The levels were all blocked out, place holder art or preliminary work to be tweaked later. This was done in the first three months. We knew we need time to polish the characters and environments. The importance was to hone the game play first. Metropolis Digital and Sapphire were making the interstitials based on the storyboards.
Sorry for the question, but were you working on Pac-Man Ghost Zone at the time? I mean, you're one of the developers?
@@l_Zero_l I was the art director for the project with a shared credit for concept.
@@MoYvStarkey do you know if the kid goes back to his world after beating the final boss?
@@Gorilla-r4g Yes. It was a "hero's journey" sort of thing. The boy gains an understanding of PacMan's world when he returns to his own reality.
@@MoYvStarkey you happen to know what's the name of the kid? I wondered that since he was a selfish person in the begining of the game, he would become a likable character in the end with the character development he goes through.
We need a fan made remake of this. I kinda liked the Ghost Lord
Therapist: Tomb Raider Pac-Man doesn't exist.
Tomb Raider Pac-Man:
Who actually takes a look at Mario 64 and says "Hmm, you know what, I think tank controls are better"
It just doesn't make sense
Definitely some interesting aesthetics but, like the majority of the comics, the tank controls (as Bubsy 3D has shown us) don't translate well to a 3D platformer game as it makes the overall pace horribly sluggish and clunky. Pac-Man World is the clear successor to this cancelled game but still great to see the development cycle nevertheless!
It's funny the fact that there's no ghost on gameplay
Clyde is right here in the background: 2:03
The intro should be a new meme.
indeed.
*ready the weapon*
no it shouldnt!
“Where’s the fire button?”- Random Edgy Kid
personally i think if sony had made the twin analog dual shock standard right from the start i think a lot of these games would have turned out a lot better
*honestly still better than the ghostly adventures pac-man design*
I watched that show. And i thought it was pretty decent.
It would appear that the pacman model used for this game was touched up, modified, and re-used in Pacman World 2, as it has similar animations to the pacman model from that particular game.
I honestly am glad this was cancelled. After all, we got Pac-Man World out of it!
And I was wondering if this were the spiritual predecessor to the Pac Man World series.
Would this footage be replaced with new high quality footage?
Probably not until next year assuming I can have a storage unit safely shipped.
This feels like a weird fever dream.
The voice over...this might be Lani Minella if I am not mistaken.
I think that boy shouldn't talk garbage about Pac man or he's going to the pac realm
Kinda wanna see the prototype get released to see how it would've been to play it
@Econniff To tell the truth, this looks like it was based off the Bubsy 3D engine, but modified. Either that, or Bubsy 3D used Pacman Ghost Zone's engine.
This should be remade for PC or PS4!👍
replace "where's the fire button" with "ticket dispenser" and you're all set
Although they made the right decision in canning this game and starting over from scratch with Pac-Man World, I kinda wish they would've used the song that plays here in the final game. I find it kind of amusing.
The dlc for bubsy 3d looks great!
I Think That The Team The Made This Game Went On To Do Pac-Man World
They were mostly fired
pac-bubsy
Reminds me of Banjo Kazooie sort-of, and I think with some more time it could have been something awesome.
If you look at Ghost Zone as a concept, it actually has some good ideas! I like the idea of playing inside a world modeled after the inner workings or electronics of an arcade cabinet! If the controls were refined and not tanked (which is odd as how Tomb Raider’s controls were fine but other games that tried to replicate it like Buzby failed miserably.), and the concept was tweaked a bit (I can tell Namco must’ve been pissed at the opening cutscene mocking Pac-Man) this could honestly be a great idea for a new Pac-Man game or even a spiritual successor to the World games! I’m honestly interested in pitching a new version of the Ghost Zone concept to Namco Bandai in the future. The story of the development of this title almost parallels that of how Toy Story was nearly ruined and canceled in development because Disney meddled with the story and made the characters unlikable.
the icon top-center makes me think the intended control scheme for this involved a ball mouse lol
Did you guys know that pac-man can toss dots like in Pac-man World? when he eats those blue things?
if bubsy 3d had effort
This game's story sounds very interesting! I wish that this game was made after all! Maybe it can be! It should definitely be remade into a game for the Nintendo Switch! I know that many things will be changed, especially the controls and the graphics, but the story should definitely remain the same! I hope that you all like my ideas! 👸💗💟🌹💐🌸🎀🐱🦄🍰
let me just say that this game looks SO cool. I know there is a bunch of glitches BUT soon they could fix it.
"No 3D, No Fighting." Well, you got your wish by being sucked into this, kid.
WOOOOOUH
This game almost looked complete and has a intro in the storyboard process.
Indeed they have to add some more music and perfect the controls but had they given it some more time, this game would have seen the light of day
Still this game looks awesome and I would like to play this one some day
I developed the story boards and directed the final 3d intro. Metropolis Digital were the guys put it all together. They were great.
@@MoYvStarkey That's rather badass. Though this is the first time I've heard of Metropolis Digital. Learn somethin' new everyday :D
I like the part where he says “YIHHHHHH!”.
This game would've been poorly recieved :/
Just by looking at it, I can see quite a few flaws, in terms of level design and it's overly generic platforming.
Thank god this game wasn’t released but I see it being a good parody to laugh at.
I never understood why they never released the protos they had.

Bubsy 3D:Pac-Man Edition
@brettzels Lol, Pac-Man World 3 was made years ago, back in 05.
@cmurillo100 The kid got blasted with the ray and turned into pacman. They did this so that they could use Pacman's likeness without acquiring the actual Pacman rights, to which Namco of Japan refused to let them use.
Looks like Namco doged a RPG bullet with this one
I Like That
Bubsy 3D but pac-man
i wish they release this game
Ok, that makes sense, thank you.
Where is this now? Would it be possible to get this dumped/backed up properly? It would be very nice to see this released rather than stuck as just videos
I missed that pac man ghost zone here... ;(
Everybodies talking about the bubsy #D gameplay but nobodies saying this
The plot's kinda cool. it's a interesting idea
ooh
"Ohh?"
Well I mean Jack got that 3D he wanted so bad. ;)
@20eric07 I guess not Namco of Japan. It's weird, apparently Namco of Japan has the rights to Pacman, not Namco of America. This created some sort of problem where JP wouldn't give NA permission and they decided to use their own story or something.
...riveting.
The story is ok but the gameplay it's a little weird. I think Pac Man World is better but I would love to see a comic or mini series about Pac Man Ghost Zone, it would be nice ^_^
Well, I do know a bad game when I see one.
sometimes I miss these graphics
Cool
where I can find the demo of the game ?
I want to play !!
Pacman early voice actor
That kid sounds just like Bubsy from Bubsy 3D.
In fact, Pacman kinda moves like Bubsy when he spins, and the has game tank-controls, which is another thing Bubs 3D had... Geez, if this game didn't get cancelled, it could pretty much have turned out to be Bubsy 3D 2.
@Econniff Funny story, actually. A Pacman platformer called Pac-Land came out a year before Super Mario Bros. did, so technically all platformers are ripoffs of a Pacman game. (Though there may have been a platformer or another before it...)
I think this could be a good game
Or not the game play looks like to control like bubsy 3D
I wish Namco would actually make this game in the future, 'cause this game looks really interesting. I've also made a video talking about this game. if you haven't seen it, then click the blue text to see it ua-cam.com/video/tMXshU8x4nw/v-deo.html
I would've played it
Lets all be happy we got pac man world instead of this.
Me habría agradado mucho jugarlo, ¿Cuál es la diferencia de estos dos juegos en cuanto a escenarios y modos?.
+Nub Smoo
You had an old 3D Pac-Man game on the PC that played like the classics? Could it have been Pac-Man: Adventures in Time?
I feel like if the gameplay was reworked, the game could have been pretty good. But yeah, as it stands, it was a fucking mess.
Looks like the controls are simmilar to Bubsy 3D...
@20eric07 I don't know. I guess they thought that a character turning into something resembling the copyrighted character in question made them exempt from having to obtain permission or something.
