Who Shouts Loudest Wins. Or Do They?

  • A little less adamancy in the world right now might go a long way towards both sides actually getting the results they want.
In case anyone hasn’t noticed, there’s a lot of shouting going on, both literal and figurative in the form of your average political comment on social media. In case those people doing the shouting haven’t noticed-and apparently, they haven’t-it’s not producing the desired result. Nobody else is listening-their audience is too busy shouting back.
So, shouting is ineffective, yet we are doing more of it. That’s insane, to refer again to Einstein’s definition.
By “shouting” I also mean conversations that involve more telling than asking: what some call the “tell-sell-yell” syndrome. Neuroscience has shown that shouting, in all those forms mentioned, activates the amygdala region and the fight-or-flight response. In other words, when you’re shouting, you’re literally turning the other person into your enemy.
Conversely, collaborative, co-creative conversations activate the prefrontal cortex and signal trust. They create a context in which both sides are open to learn from the other and neither side is trying to push their agenda. Nobody wins, and yet everybody wins.
It’s worth noting that social media, where most shouting happens, is designed to generate addiction through frequent dopamine hits. Perhaps we’ve become dopamine addicts and shouting is our drug. Sadly, when those enemies that we created do the same back to us, our amygdala fires up and we find ourselves in a vicious cycle.
Ironically, all this means we’re less conscious, a lot less in control of our brains and our egos, and yet we believe the opposite.
Is there a way out of this? That's what you'll find from 06:32 onwards.
