    Hey Dave, speak to Orange, they should build you a signature CR120 DS Amp, this would be great!!

  • @swmorgan515
    @swmorgan515 2 роки тому +5

    From my reading of the CR60 manual, it seems like the amp is designed to push 8 ohms like the 120H and 120C, but is saddled with a 16ohms stock speaker which cuts the watts in half to 60. So pairing it with an 8ohms speaker should be an easy upgrade for more volume and headroom.
    Thankfully Orange didn't do the same thing with the Crush Pro combo (which I own) and gave the 1x12 combo an 8ohms 150W speaker which sounds great.

      The CR60 only has a single A/B power section. The CR120 has two. It's actually the same PCBs with silk screening on the second power section that says "CR120 only" and the components are missing on that area of the CR60 power section.
      With the CR60, having an A/B power amplifier, the power output is NOT cut in half with twice the speaker resistance. That's a characteristic of a class D power amp. For the CR60, it's likely about 42watts with the included 16ohm speaker and you can get the full 60 Watts by connecting a second 16ohm or just a single 8ohm speaker.
      Ornage advertising it as a 60 watt amp is one of those things that's "technically true" because you can connect more speaker load to achieve the 60 watt output but very misleading in practice because most people will just play it as-is.

    9:09 that is what I consider to be the not only the way a strat should sound but the great tone in rock. This makes me rethink all my notions that fender amps are the only way to acheive it.

    The number of speakers should not matter as long as the resistance is right. It looks like it can handle a 16 ohm. (the Amp does not see # of speakers, just the resistance and wattage).
    I'f im not mistaken your Marshall cabs are 16 ohms too. so you should feel free to crank em!!

      That is correct! It's nice to push 5-12" speakers all at once! I like to run a long speaker cable from my 1x12 PRS combo into a 4x12 on opposite sides if the room.

    The only time you need to worry about impedance mismatches is when the impedance of the speaker is lower than what the amp is rated for because it will draw excessive amounts of power from the amp, leading to potentially burning the amp out. An 8 Ohm amp going into a 16 Ohm speaker will simply result in lower effective power.

    The 60 was thinner and if you like that sound you can always cut the bass on the cr120. Cr120 is worth it for the head room. Still sounds beast at low volumes too and it's not like you're using up valves. I also wouldn't want to see the cr120 with too many gizmos. One of the aspects that draws a lot of players to this amp is it's very simplicity. It's a stand-alone amp that's all analog save for the Reverb. Also, I feel this amp was a form of resurrection of some of the great old solid states like the Sunn Beta Lead. Bare-bones simplicity and bare-bones reliability. As always, a fantastic demo with great musicality and playing, Dave!

    Awesome, David. My version of a CR120 MKII: Based on the OR120, two channels, two channels, Clean Channel with a Mid, and a Dirty Channel, super high headroom on the clean channel, a three stage gain on the dirty and a universal Master Volume. No FX Loop, keep it as vintage as possible, but I'd like a four way switchable reverb as opposed to a three way. On the MKII, have a Plate, Spring, Hall and a Cathedral setting for way more ambient, surreal reverb sounds. No FX such as Chorus, Delay, Tremolo etc. I can get away with Reverb, but I'm not into other effects in amps, I really like having more versatility in pedals. :)

    Orange needs to build you some gear because you litterally do the best reviews on their crush series this vid a year ago made me purchase the cr60 another one of your vids made me purchase the cr120 head and I couldn’t be more pleased. You pull tones from the crush series that would shock any rockerverb owner. So thank you from me all the way from the USA for great videos.

  • @EDCBushcraft
    @EDCBushcraft 5 років тому +13

    First time I have to disagree with you Dave:) As long as the impedance doesn’t go below 8 Ohms it really doesn’t matter if the amp is driving one, two or 8 speakers.
    The amp´s output section just sees the overall impedance, I doesn’t care about how many speakers it’s driving.

  • @sleepy4x
    @sleepy4x 6 років тому +3

    I heard no big diference. The CR60 was thinner, mostly on the clean channel. Overdriven the CR 120 had a slightly fatter sound. For Live performances i would prefer the CR 120, but in the rehearsal room, the cr 60 would be my choice. Well, at home even smaller one would do the job.

      aunt jenifer I choose V30 because I know how it sounds, it is most popular speaker, also I am planing to use CR60 as a guitar cab with other amps, most of them paired with V30 by manufacturer. CR60 by itself excellent choice for my workshop, and after I swapped speaker for V30 I am 1000% happy with it! If someday I’ll get bored with V30, I definitely will check Legend, thanks for advise!

    They sounded the same to me except the CR60 had less low end in all the examples. Personally I prefer a little less low end because at gig volumes the bass gets louder anyway and makes for a more balanced sound IMO.
    Now what I really want to know is if the Crush 35RT sounds anything like the fully cranked tone in this video because if it does then instead of buying a CR60C I'll get a Boss Katana 50 and a Crush 35RT for the same total price!

    To my ears there's hardly any difference for the clean and gritty sounds between both amps, it's at the higher gain sounds I seem to notice that the 120 is pushing a fair bit more low end and the 60 sounds a bit squishy because of the 'lack' of low end compaired to the 120. But then again, I'm hearing it through a silly Ipad speaker so pretty much everything sounds squishy.
    Great stuff again. Great stuff in general, it really helped me get passed the 'tubes/valves or bust' attitude and made me look at things differently.
    I've always loved my old Vox VT100 but somehow moved to Valve amps that I never could get to sound the way I wanted them to sound apart from my Vox Nightrain. But I am seriously looking for a decent solidstate to use once I join a band again. Thanks for helping me realise I don't need a Valve amp to sound good... I really want one of those AC30VR's but I might just give the old VT100 a try again when I get the chance to take it from storage.

      It's in your head. Open the amps up. They have exactly the same PCB and components except where the two power sections exist, one is screened "CR60/CR120" and the second one is screened "cr120 only". Other than the second power amplifier, they're absolutely identical. No difference whatsoever. None.

    I was just watching your most recent "Answer of the Question" upload with the Katana vs Bandit question, and I mentioned that I thought about getting a Katana 50 to pair with my CR60C... then I see this and am reminded I want to upgrade to a 4x12 because I only jam in my office so why not rock a 4x12. :)
    It would be nice to see what changes they bring in the next revision of the CR60/120. I wouldn't mind seeing a stripped down mini version of the 60 in head form. Just the dirt channel, effect loop, reverb, foot switchable boost perhaps... just something the perfect size for their new vertical 2x12's. :) I do like your idea of dropping the clean in favor of the a 2nd dirt channel though.
    What has been your favorite speaker to pair up with the CR? The speakers in the Marshall cab, or the speakers you put in your Orange 4x12? I know you mentioned not liking the Voice of the World speakers. I agree with your high end fizz assessment, although I typically only notice it when close mic'ing. I feel like [at least with the 1x12] the VotW speaker also has way too much low end [or perhaps its just the CR] and I usually have the bass rolled way back [if not on 0].

    I've serviced both. The PCB inside has silk screened on it CR60/CR120. There is a second A/B power amp in the 120 which says "CR120 only". So, the ONLY difference is the second power amp to double the power output. Otherwise, completely identical. Same PCB.

  • @nolarocks
    @nolarocks Рік тому

    You should be able to run both amps into your Marshall cab at the same time. The Marshall cab should have a stereo mode where you can use two 8ohm inputs at the same time. So plug the 8ohm out of one amp into the back of the cab - and the other into the second input on the cab. It'd be a great way to compare the two amps! You could turn one down at a time and A/B the two amps. Might be a fun experiment.

    I couldn’t hear any discernible difference in the quality of tone between them other than the 60 sounds thinner, if that makes sense, but as you said that will be down to it coupled up to the 4x12. It was more noticeable with headphones too.

    Depending on personal preference • Both sound good •
    Cr120 is 👍 But Bugera TriRec All Day Long and you don’t need any pedals like the Cr120 •

      Interesting (i had a doubt because i searched a lot :p )
      I asked because it could be cool for me with a 2x12 cab. But i need a Gibson too, or A ce1 boss and so much things i lost my mind really. Thank you for your answer and your vidéos :)

    Where's the video mentioned at the end about "how quite it can go", I've played a few CR60's in different stores but haven't found a CR120 combo anywhere to try it out
