- Jocelyn Clark, who is also known by her Korean name, Jo Se-rin, is a professor at Pai Chai University and a gayageum player. She has been mastering the art of the gayageum, a 12-string Korean zither, for the past 20 years, and she was honored with the Gold Prize in the Newcomer Division at the National Hyangsa Gayageum Byeongchang Competition this October.
The Alaskan-born gayageum player honed her skills and knowledge under the tutelage of prominent traditional Korean musicians. She also acquired her doctorate degree from Harvard with a dissertation on Gayageum Byeongchang. Despite having performed numerous times on stage throughout the years, she says her heart still pounds whenever she takes the stage.
We met with Jocelyn Clark at the Korea House, a cultural experience center established in Chungmuro for the purpose of introducing the traditional culture and lifestyle of Koreans to foreigners. We also got to check out how she practices her vocalization techniques inside her car, which provides the same effects of white noise as you would get if you were training under a waterfall. In addition to demonstrating how to play the instrument, she explained to us the different parts of the gayageum and what they represent as well as the various modes and styles associated with this instrument.
Join us on this week's The INNERview to meet Jocelyn Clark who holds a genuine passion for the gayageum and traditional Korean music.

Damn good answer to the interviewer's question at the end. Genuine and realistic. Sensible and profound. She's a very talented and intellectual woman. Inspiring.
What an amazing interview and perspective to watch....an Alaskan American encountering Korean culture in all its blessings and curses.
Not an easy feat whatsoever in field that is very traiditional. And her Korean is so good.
Wow! I loved the whole interview. I started practicing gayageum at my Korean school 6 months ago and I learned a lot from this episode...it's just spiring. :D btw I'm from Colombia.
Thank you for this wonderful interview. So many interesting information about Korean culture and music. Performer is so talented and interesting teller. She’s so inspiring, so I want to search more info about this instrument and Korean traditional music.
Like going from A all to Z from English speaking to Jeolla Pansori... can't imagine the journey to this accomplishment. She's got a whole slew of accomplishments under her belt since the age of 3. Amazing person.... so modest. Reminds of my aunt. Kudos!!
The Gayageum is beautiful. I am a harpist and black American I have always wanted to play the Gayageum. I study both Korean and Japanese this is Amazing! But I must say that that American lady should not think for all Americans maybe she is inspiration for other Americans who want to learn the Gayageum are the korean language. The Korean people I know are some of the coolest people they are the ones who inspire me to keep going, Beautiful interview!
This is so beautiful
