Forty divided by .08 equals 500. Is this a problem or just something to talk about?
John, I thank you and the left side of my brain thanks you. I enjoy refreshing my math skills with your daily video updates.
I was about 7 when I was taught this. What do they teach in schools these days?
You could have shown many other examples in the length of this video. Just show how to solve the problem with multiple examples to drive it home and do away with most of the carrying on and promoting. I'm watching math tutorials because my grandson facetimes me to get help. Yours are helpful but I just zoom to where you do the answer and move on.
Maybe your grandson should watch since he may be the one who can make use of the tutoring. The teacher is trying to teach, not just the mechanics of the math, but the rationale behind it. That is why we MAY "zoom" to see the answer and then go on to another problem, if we get it right. But if we don't know the process, we can watch and learn.
Hello everyone,
here is my solution, without watching the video or reading other comments:
8 % of x is 40
0.08 ⸳ x = 40
x = 40 : 0.08
x = (40 / 1) / (8 / 100)
x = (40 / 1) ⸳ (100 / 8)
x = (5 / 1) ⸳ (100 / 1)
x = 500
Control
500 ⸳ (8 / 100) =
5 ⸳ 8 =
40
qed
Best regards
Marcus 😎
When I first saw this, I went dead!
0.08x = 40
0.08x/0.08 = 40/0.08
x = 500
That's it : ( x . 8)/100 = 40 that is : 8 . x = 4000 so x = 500. Just simple logical. No fussing around. Why so many words here. The teacher is a pain... Would never take his courses.
Seriously?? 9 minutes on this problem?? That's a lot a jabbering!!
I am math useless. I have seen two of your videos now and am happier. Thanks. I have NEVER (I am in my 60s) successfully completed an algebra word problem (one train leaves at 2PM going 35 mph and another ..., let X =- the number...) . Do you have any idiot-proof videos on that? Thank you.
Hahahaha 😄😄😄
I've never been good at math. But I did learn BASIC math. I LOOKED at this and knew the answer.
No pencil required.
WHY are they making it so difficult? Trying to drive kids crazy?!
I did it slightly different. I figured out how many times 8% divided into 100% and then multiplied that by 40. So you end up with 40x12.5 which is also 500.
Did exactly the same, 2 seconds tops of mental arithmetic.
This is educational.
40 / 0,08 = 500. You don't need 9 minutes for this answer. Not even 9 seconds.
Iam 60years and still trying to solve some of your sums Infact iam happy since iam refreshing my brains l, I remember to have coaching my son maths at primary in eary 2000, but now he's a graduate and now working He is an A,Material so parents dont ignore the little knowledge you have, it can save your families destiny.
X=40×100/8=500ans
8% of x is 40 can be solved quickly by dividing 40 by 8 and then taking this number and multiply by 100 to account for the the use of percentage.
: 40/8=5(100)=500.
This is equivalent to (0.08)x = 40, or x = 40/0.08 = 4000/8 = 500.
I majored in ME…45 yrs ago, had up through Tensor Calculus and therefore failed to write down here probably too steps done in my head.
OH MY,.... WHAT DOES SCHOOL TEACH NOW? I was in school in the 60's this was like a 5 sec problem for me. no need for paper or pencil. I was just a avg. student.
When I was at school (1970s) percentage questions like this were mental arithmetic.
8% of x is 40 >>> so x = 500
Why ?
Because 40/8 = 5 ... so 5 is 1% of x .... and 5 x 100 = 500
8 x 40 is 32 move decimal point of sum 1 place left. 3.2
Except the answer is 500
You didn't understand the task. Correct is 40 / 8 = 5, move decimal comma two places right: 500.
I said 8 x what number equals 40. So 8x5 is forty then added another zero. I checked it by saying 10% of 500 is 50 so 8% would be 40. Old school
Thinking
I am not a math wiz but this how I do it in my head, because I like to shop sales. 5 ×8 =40 and then add the zeros back and you have 500. It might not be the correct procedure but it is easy to do in your head while shopping. 🙂
Man. You said use a calculator ? Like. I thiught you were supposed to show how to solve the equation. Not use a calculator to do it for you. You didnt show the steps..
if 8 percent equals 40 then 1 percent is 5 and multiply by 100 equals 500...why does it take 9 minutes to explain this simple question?
8% x X = 40 => X = 40 /8% => 40 / (8% x 0.01) => 40 / 0.08 = 500
8 goes into 40 5 times so 8 percent is 8 over 100. So 100 times 5 = 500. There's your answer folks.
Do you have homeschool materials / tutorials too?
Where can I find them?
New subbie here.
8 goes into 40, 5 times. Multiply 5 by 100 (to make it a full %) =500.
7% of 20, Start with 1% of 20 is .2, .2 x 7 = 1.4
No algebra needed.
40/8 = 5.
5X100 = 500.
X= 500.
done.
!
I divide 100 by 8 =12.5
then I multiply 40 x 12.5 = 500
Simply, 8% = 40 therefore 40 / 8 = 5, 5 x 100 = 500
Thank you! You are the only one that wrote this to make sense to me.
@@ST-rj8iu Your welcome, remember the fastest way to get from point A to point B is in a straight line.
@@ST-rj8iu With this particular problem you could have said "what is the value of 8% of 100 =12 1/2 so if 8% = 40 then we can multiple 40 x 12 1/2 = 500.
8/100=40/x and solve in your head
2 seconds. 1% is (40/8) = 5. So 100% =500. x=500
I've put in my calculator 40 ÷ 0.8 and it said 50...where do the extra zero come from?
0.8 is 80% not 8%. 0.08 would be 8%.
Didn't find this one difficult if 8% =40 then 1% =5 (40/8=5) then x100=500
Exactly how I did it...👍 🇬🇧
I really like this problem,too😀
40÷.08=500. It's as easy as that.
Any of this type of problem, your argument should be , because you want to find principle amount, say if 8 from 100, then 40 from what?
So 100× 40 ÷ 8 = 500
This can be applied for any ratio.
No need for a calculator if you keep the numbers whole. 8/100 = 40/X; 100*40 = 4000; 4000/8 = 500.
I started by thinking 8/100 and reduced to 2/25 then did 25/2 or 12.5 to get to 100%. Then took 12.5*40 then 25*20 then 50*10 is 500.
$500 dollar dinner at a super expensive restaurant, minimum 20% tip....LAWD why did I bring my family here!
0.08*x= 40. 40/0.08= 500
Dam!!! Get to it!!!!
Great commentary
8x/100=40
8x=4000
x=500
get to the point 😭

40 diveded by 8 is 8, so q% is 5, times 100 is 500
I can do these problems but none of the GED questions
What Ged questions? I don’t see those
(40*100)/8=500.

X is 320
(40/8)100=500
X=500

Nine minutes to solve this is making a mountain out of a mole hill
I wanted to know first what 1 percent of x is. So I divided 40 by 8, which is 5. Then I multiplied 5 by hundred and that's how I came to the correct result.
These problems are solved in a very simple way.
Replace the % as divided by 100.
Replace ‘of’ with the multiplication sign X
Replace ‘’is’ with the ‘=‘ sign
Solve the expression.
So 8% of x is 40 is written as 8/100 X x= 40
Or 8x = 40 X 100 or x = 40 X100/8 = 500
Funny how you say "replace" the % (per-cent = per 100) as divided by 100 as that is quite literally what "%" means. An x amount PER 100!
In a similar fashion ‰ means per-mille = per 1000.
"Cent" and "mille" being the Latin counting-words for respectively 100 and 1000. And "per" has been adopted by the English language 1 to 1 so it means roughly the same in English and Latin.
Don't use tricks, just try and understand what it actually says... Because mistakes are going to happen if you do it like this.. if it's written down slightly different...
@@jazzdirt Short cuts and tricks are not for everyone. They are useful to those who understand the concepts. They help in saving you time while taking a test.
A really good teacher would have taken 3 minutes to explain the concept and then used the rest of the time to work out a few more sample problems and teach the students the ‘tricks’ to do things faster.
Here a lot of time is spent on self promotion and marketing. There are teachers in this space who get to the crux of the problem really fast and thus their videos are very popular.
@@CMBR Maybe true, but if it's written down slightly different this particular "trick" doesn't work.. Because of the second line.. And the first and the third are basically replace the same thing with the same thing...
If it helps him understand .. fine.. but it's utter BS.
This "trick" basically shows he doesn't understand and arrives at an answer by replacing things with other things and not understanding they are actually the same thing... It's not a trick, it's someone grasping. And at that point a teacher should help him understand rather then supporting it because he arrives at the right answer with it.
@@jazzdirt Well, if it is written down differently, figure out a different trick. I said these are for those who understand the concepts. You just don’t get it, do you?
And yes, you can have the last word.
Hello love from New Orleans ❤️
🤔. 👍👍👍
Duh, 40 divided by 8 or 500. 3 Second algebra problem solve. You took 10 minutes. What a waste. Want to do something productive, write a textbook that is UNDERSTANDABLE by the common people and that will help them pass the GED or even advance in math. Otherwise, stay out of my class room.
Just stumbled across your channel. Once again, I guess my brain just works differently. I start by multiplying 8 by 10 to get 80, and 8 by 2.5 to get the other 20, totaling 100. So I just have to multiply 40 by 12.5 to get 500.
