    Forty divided by .08 equals 500. Is this a problem or just something to talk about?

    You could have shown many other examples in the length of this video. Just show how to solve the problem with multiple examples to drive it home and do away with most of the carrying on and promoting. I'm watching math tutorials because my grandson facetimes me to get help. Yours are helpful but I just zoom to where you do the answer and move on.

      Maybe your grandson should watch since he may be the one who can make use of the tutoring. The teacher is trying to teach, not just the mechanics of the math, but the rationale behind it. That is why we MAY "zoom" to see the answer and then go on to another problem, if we get it right. But if we don't know the process, we can watch and learn.

    Hello everyone,
    here is my solution, without watching the video or reading other comments:
    8 % of x is 40
    0.08 ⸳ x = 40
    x = 40 : 0.08
    x = (40 / 1) / (8 / 100)
    x = (40 / 1) ⸳ (100 / 8)
    x = (5 / 1) ⸳ (100 / 1)
    x = 500
    Control
    500 ⸳ (8 / 100) =
    5 ⸳ 8 =
    40
    qed
    Best regards
    Marcus 😎

      That's it : ( x . 8)/100 = 40 that is : 8 . x = 4000 so x = 500. Just simple logical. No fussing around. Why so many words here. The teacher is a pain... Would never take his courses.

    When I was at school (1970s) percentage questions like this were mental arithmetic.
    8% of x is 40 >>> so x = 500
    Why ?
    Because 40/8 = 5 ... so 5 is 1% of x .... and 5 x 100 = 500

  • @CMBR
    @CMBR 2 роки тому

    These problems are solved in a very simple way.
    Replace the % as divided by 100.
    Replace ‘of’ with the multiplication sign X
    Replace ‘’is’ with the ‘=‘ sign
    Solve the expression.
    So 8% of x is 40 is written as 8/100 X x= 40
    Or 8x = 40 X 100 or x = 40 X100/8 = 500

    • @jazzdirt
      @jazzdirt 2 роки тому

      Funny how you say "replace" the % (per-cent = per 100) as divided by 100 as that is quite literally what "%" means. An x amount PER 100!
      In a similar fashion ‰ means per-mille = per 1000.
      "Cent" and "mille" being the Latin counting-words for respectively 100 and 1000. And "per" has been adopted by the English language 1 to 1 so it means roughly the same in English and Latin.
      Don't use tricks, just try and understand what it actually says... Because mistakes are going to happen if you do it like this.. if it's written down slightly different...

    • @CMBR
      @CMBR 2 роки тому

      @@jazzdirt Short cuts and tricks are not for everyone. They are useful to those who understand the concepts. They help in saving you time while taking a test.
      A really good teacher would have taken 3 minutes to explain the concept and then used the rest of the time to work out a few more sample problems and teach the students the ‘tricks’ to do things faster.
      Here a lot of time is spent on self promotion and marketing. There are teachers in this space who get to the crux of the problem really fast and thus their videos are very popular.

    • @jazzdirt
      @jazzdirt 2 роки тому

      @@CMBR Maybe true, but if it's written down slightly different this particular "trick" doesn't work.. Because of the second line.. And the first and the third are basically replace the same thing with the same thing...
      If it helps him understand .. fine.. but it's utter BS.
      This "trick" basically shows he doesn't understand and arrives at an answer by replacing things with other things and not understanding they are actually the same thing... It's not a trick, it's someone grasping. And at that point a teacher should help him understand rather then supporting it because he arrives at the right answer with it.

    • @CMBR
      @CMBR 2 роки тому

      @@jazzdirt Well, if it is written down differently, figure out a different trick. I said these are for those who understand the concepts. You just don’t get it, do you?

    Just stumbled across your channel. Once again, I guess my brain just works differently. I start by multiplying 8 by 10 to get 80, and 8 by 2.5 to get the other 20, totaling 100. So I just have to multiply 40 by 12.5 to get 500.
