    • @ArtistsCry13
      @ArtistsCry13 6 років тому +11

      Geofanny Yohanes Because it’s supposed to come naturally. Vibrato is the air coming out of your lungs MAKING YOUR VOCAL FOLDS VIBRATE. It isn’t deliberate.

    • @skylerpowers8871
      @skylerpowers8871 6 років тому +12

      AJRA Technically, you can reach yourself how to instill vibrato without moving the jaw and the most technically adept singers can control whether or not any given note has vibrato. But Florence still uses her jaw for vibrato, which isn’t bad, but it’s still not real vibrato.

      @@ArtistsCry13 there's a ton of instances of her in this video where she isn't moving her jaw at all and still having that vibrato. She doesn't always do it. I think it's more of a choice than a necessity.

  • @arxsyn

    I think she's a dramatic Soprano. She is famous for her stamina which is very surprising to me because she doesn't look too robust physically. She can hold notes for long periods of time in full voice. And when she wails, boy, does she ever! When she speaks, she has a smooth, high, rather sweet and warm, feminine tone (higher tessitura than a mezzo). Her 6th octave notes have character and weight as opposed to the light, flute like tones of the coloratura Soprano. Sometimes she sounds like Celine way up there.
    She isn't my favourite, l get tired of her wailing and quick vibrato. I really love her fellow Brit Clare Maguire who similarly whose voice is HUGE but is richer Mezzo 😍... Shame she is very much underrated. My other fave big voice is Canadian singer songwriter Amanda Marshall. Her gutsy, rock tinged full voice singing is EVERYTHING, but still so beautiful and warm and so full of character! A stand out to illustrate the power of her voice is her amazing song "A Beautiful Goodbye".

    • @ocandro
      @ocandro 4 роки тому +9

      Definitely a soprano, no mezzo would ever have lows this foggy and weak, she just doesn't know how to take away some of that chest weight to truly blossom on E5 and above. That said, I think she is a full lyric maybe spinto, the head voice is waaay too light for a dramatic, plus her volume output is overall not big enough.

      Marlon Liendo Beyonce has the clearest mid-high belts and falsetto in the entire industry right now. Watch her performance of Listen on the x factor UK, for example. From the second she starts singing it's like liquid.
      Plus, Florence definitely doesn't have the range of many other modern singers. Ariana is the Queen of effortless high belts that stretch 3 notes above Florence's belted range. Demi goes significantly higher as well. Nicole Scherzinger too. In terms of some amateur singing competition singers with much clearer belts than Florence despite being higher: sohyang, Sisaundra Lewis, Amanda Brown, Alison porter, tesanne chin, etc.
      You are overrating her a lot

    Would love to see this updated to include High As Hope and Dance Fever eras. I know essentially nothing about music theory on this level, but even I can hear that her voice has developed a LOT in the last 8 years since she started taking serious vocal lessons. Both ends of her range are much more supported now, her lows are richer and her highs are (somehow) sweeter. She even has said in interviews more recently, that when she was younger and untrained she pretty much just yelled, haha.
    Personally, I like the raw and rough sound of her untrained youth-- there is something uniquely charming about her unpolished voice. But she has grown so much, I love her matured voice even more 😍

    Do we know what her supported range is? Her lows seem to barely hold B3s. Belts sound supported up to C#5 and I think some of her D5s carry support as well. Head voice, though? G5, maybe? I can never tell with female head voice...

    • @diosingson7261
      @diosingson7261 6 років тому +1

      Mic Ku I think she can support her head voice consistently till like an A5, and yes her lows suck, which is weird since she seems like a mezzo.

    • @strandedtraveller1038
      @strandedtraveller1038 5 років тому +2

      Since then she has had a lot of clear, solid, and well-projected A3s in live performances of "June", "Patricia", "Only If For A Night", "No Light, No Light"; as well as some decent G#3s in "Sky Full Of Song". I think her lower range definitely improved over time. As for belted notes, A4 - B4 seems to be the area she shines in, while she often sounds relaxed belting up to at least C5. Her consistency in head voice is kinda tricky because she seems to use falsetto quite frequently too, though they're both equally light and beautiful. Overall she's quite good technique wise, but I'm kinda having doubts on her actual vocal fach.

    Florence is quite a strange singer actually. I really like her tone and appreciate her for her abilities, such as sustaining notes for the longest time :D

      Um...upper belts are where she shines.

    • @rmi9345
      @rmi9345 9 років тому +3

      ***** Hmm no, I don't think so. Unfortunately there is no mixed quality in her upper belts, thus they are very throaty and cause her to go flat on certain notes. I personally love her tone and stylistics, but believe me, she is struggling on those high belts.

    • @FlorenceandtheMachineBG
      @FlorenceandtheMachineBG 9 років тому +10

      +Mojo Pin I can agree. Her belts above Eb5 are hit or miss, although she has a good technique and doesn't strain IF she is static on stage. Due to her expressive style on stage she is often unstable.

    • @rmi9345
      @rmi9345 9 років тому +5

      Florence and the Machine BG Yeah, let's all agree that she is in fact a very talented vocalist has some impressive pipes. Do I think she is technically perfect? No, and I wouldn't say that she doesn't strain on high belts, even at her best. I really don't want to offend anybody, especially since I love Flo + The Machine, but there's a difference between a chesty mixed-belt and a chesty "throaty" belt, so in order for her to have "effortless" belts, she would have to start mixing :) But that's just my take on her, anyways :)

    • @FlorenceandtheMachineBG
      @FlorenceandtheMachineBG 9 років тому +2

      +Mojo Pin By ''doesn't strain'' I mean she is rarely pulling her larynx high while belting. I got your point tho. :)

    • @diosingson7261

      @ArtistsCry13 6 років тому +2

      Listen to the belting segment. Her second passaggio is clearly at E5, which is a Lyric Mezzo. Her upper belts are so tense and shrill because she tries to sing them with the same amount of heft as her mid-belts (B4-Eb5) whereas she should be mixing more starting at E5.
      Easier said than done, but when you’re a professional singer you’re kind of expected to take care of your voice...

    I love Florence but she needs to learn how to do vibrato with better technique. I always see people congratulating her for such a fast vibrato but she’s doing that through moving her jaw. Even I can do ‘vibrato’ if I move my jaw and I don’t sing. As it’s about the control of air and opening your vocal folds you shouldn’t need to move your jaw to make the vibrato happen. Don’t mean any hate, I love Florence and the machine, just pointing it out as it would improve her life vocals sooo much

      As long as she's not going for bel canto or classic musical theatre, there aren't many rules as to how you're going to achieve something. There are obviously healthy and unhealthy ways of doing it, but Florence has an unbelievably healthy technique in everything she sings, especially considering it's popular music. Using your jaw to do vibrato is not unhealthy and does not damage your voice in any way, and considering she can do it both ways (as you can see in the video), she doesn't "need to learn how to do a better vibrato". She simply chooses when to use each.

    I used to think she is a mezzo, like most people, because she shines so much in her 4th octave and has this bell-like richness and thickness there and her upper belts are often disappointing and clumsy. But why would a mezzo soprano suck so much in 3rd octave (I know she finally improved a lot in hbhbhb but why the he'll does it take so much effort?), do pretty quick runs and sing somewhat clear E5-F#5, despite very chesty mix (and they are so pretty and soaring and blossomed, when done well occasionally), then there's that pretty light, beautiful head range, where she seems at ease (though her C6 and above, a gold standard for true sopranos again confuse me, because she uses them a bit like exclamations, rather than real singing...). I don't think she cuts through instrumentation like a dramatic or spinto, though she can be on the metallic side at times. I'm starting to consider a possibility she is a very chesty, untrained full lyric soprano or some hybrid (edit: I no longer agree - hybrid voices are not widely accepted and frankly none of them fits Florence).

      You're not wrong, I do believe she might have a hybrid voice type.
      I just didn't put the efort to look deeper for it.

      She's absolutely a soprano of some sort. Her lows are too breathy and unsupported to be anything else and her ease in the fifth and sixth octaves in her head voice is pretty indicative of that. I think she could very well be a spinto soprano that's just untrained. I think her voice has way too much weight and cutting power to be a lyric soprano though.

    Great job on the video.
    I know it's a bit late but for some reason I think Florence has hit some nice lows in her live version of Breath of Life you might want to check out.

      +iTeacupPanda Sorry no lows on that song (there's some good A3s but it's too high to be taken as a mezzo low)

      Her song “Bedroom Hyms” has a really low note in the second verse I think. Haven’t looked for a live version though, i’ve just listened to the regular track
