Won’t hurt a thing. If it bothers you, scuff it with scotchbright, shoot it with rustoleum and call it a day. I watched some of your vids on the Hellcat and agreed with you as far as the chassis issue and buyback but now chips in paint from normal driving and sticky tires, now some surface rust on the chassis? Sounds like you wouldn’t be happy with anything from any manufacturer. If it runs, rides, and drives like it should, spend a few hours fix the minor things that bother you and then enjoy your nice car. I had a 16 Hellcat and it was awesome, not perfect, but still awesome!!

Man, if you purchase any car that was made in the winter, theres going to be rust. You leave your car outside while driving in the rain, your rotors will show rust the next day. Get some scotchbrite and wd40 and throw some elbow grease into scrubbing it off if you're soo worried.

I'm a corrosion engineer in the oilfield but also know the SAE specifications on corrosion. That surface rust is normal even for a new car. You are looking at unfinished surfaces exposed to atmospheric condensation. High strength heat treated steel rusts faster and should remain uncoated. Unpainted surfaces next to galvanized fasteners are also subject to galvanic corrosion. You do not want to paint those surfaces or you will subject those surfaces to under-coating attack and premature failure. My 1956 Nomad came from the factory with a partially painted engine and an unpainted transmission. Normal production, and it has lasted 63 years so far. Even the Duesenberg chassis had a sloppy paint job with unpainted parts and surface rust. They were very expensive cars back in the day. They are now over restored million dollar cars now, so you don't see that. If you take this to court, I would be an expert witness for the defendant. You might want to study the SAE specifications on how rust is controlled in design, manufacture, and assembly.

  • @purebredcats
    @purebredcats 5 років тому +7

the components you're pointing out as rusted are made out of a mild steel. from what i can see, it's all surface rust. i'm not sure what makes you think those parts have been out in the atmosphere or under water for 5-6 years. the nastiest bolt looks like it's maybe a year old.
i also don't see any surface galling on the bushings. you would expect to see that if they were pressed in while rusted.
you point out the head of one bolt, but the shaft of another and ask why they are rusted differently. first, you're pointing out bolts that may be of a different composition because they're on different parts of the car. but the issue is more likely that the anti corrosion film on the threads has been worn off because they were threaded through a nut. you'll also often see that the leading edges on the bolt heads have small spots of rust from contact with the driving tool.
to all of this, you might ask why do they not use stainless products in their suspension? mild steel tends to have a greater tensile strength and yield rate. that's something you want when it comes to components which are going to be put under the types of stresses you see in a suspension. because they're built in canada, i suspect they use metric grading. the bolts theyre using are probably an 8.8 or 10.9 class, depending on the metal theyre mating to. to get the equivalent tensile strength of those in stainless, youd probably have to go to an A4 bolt. that'd quintuple, at a minimum, just the price of the bolts.
aside from that, because of using dissimilar metals, they would have to take extreme care in whatever the bolts were fastening. you generally shouldn't be mating a stainless bolt into a mild steel component. it will cause corrosion and exacerbate what you think you're trying to make chrysler fix.

Omg it's bare metal! Bare metal will rust no matter if the car is parked in the garage or driven daily. And it is a Dodge. The metal will rust 10x faster on it! The parts you are pointing out are not coated in anything. They're bare metal! The bolts that have no rust are zinc coated. Zinc doesn't rust. Surface rust will not affect the bolts clamping force and is in no way dangerous as you put it. It really does sound like you're going after a buy back to me. I have a 2018 BMW M6 and I live in SC. The car has never seen the rain or snow is always parked in a heated/cooled garage under a cover and guess what? There's rust in those same exact places. It's part of having bare metal exposed to air. Have I complained? Not one bit! And that's on a $130,000 car. Quit complaining and just deal with it.

You're correct that the suspension is brought into BAP (Brampton Assembly Plant) as bolt on module. The module is supplied by TRW (St. Catharines, Ont.) as a tier 1 supplier to the OEM.
The corrosion spec. used calls for ASTM-B117 (Salt Spray Test). Per PS-508, E-coat Black @ 240 hrs - w/no visible orange rust. Per PS-79, Zinc-Dichromate yellow (bushings and bolts) @ 96hrs - w/no visible white rust.
The black E-coat is done on suspension parts for appearance only (as a class B surface) and does not affect the longevity or seviceability of the parts. The zinc dichromate parts could have seviceability issues if not properly treated at manufacture.
I believe that TRW does their own E-coat in house but sends the zinc out to a tier 2 sub-contractor (for which the tier 1 takes full QC responsibility). Seems that TRW is falling short as those parts should NOT be in that condition at this point.
That said, the failure mode observed would be regarded as a minor cosmetic / customer satisfaction issue. Onesies / twosies would be repaired on a "goodwill" basis by the OEM. But, if TRW has displayed a systemic problem with their process the OEM will smack their pee-pee, place them on a costly containment plan and threaten to forward warranty costs to them. At this point "goodwill" replacements will likely cease. Best you can get then is a wire brush treatment and some rattle-can tough coat from the dealership on TRW's dime.
I've seen your other vids and the troubles you've had and I feel you man. The Hellcat is a halo-car and it's just shit that this happened. But it really is a minor issue and, from an engineering standpoint, a rattle-can fix (done with care) is just as good as new parts.

Id have to agree with Paul and most of the sane people that have commented, if i spend all that money on a car to have it delivered right to me that vehicle should not have any rust on it, those parts should be coated from the manufacturer to prevent those issues, obviously over time that coating will wear off and we as consumers then should be responsible for upkeep, my 2017 gmc canyon denali has 20,000 miles on it and doesnt have that kind of rust and that was driven through Idaho winters with salt and snow on the roads, my 2013 chrysler 300 doesnt have rust on my suspension, i also have a trackhawk on the way and if it comes with those issues i will not accept it if it has this issue, it should be their responsibilty to coat those parts not mine. I also went to go buy a charger hellcat for my fiance the other day and after seeing Pauls redeye in person the first thing i did was look under that charger and decided not to buy it because of the rust. Pauls pictures do not do the rust justice, its worse in person then in the pictures.

I have a Scat Pack that was special ordered in April and delivered in June of 2016. Upon delivery, my car had rust on suspension arms, bushings, and hubs similar to your Redeye but no where near as extensive. I just checked the bushings on mine, they have rust but no where near as much as yours. And mine in almost 3 years old. What mine does not have is severely rusted ball joint bolts like yours does. The coating on the suspension parts on my car is not good, the coating on yours is terrible, in some places there is no coating at all. The bushing on yours and mine do not appear to be coated at all. Since your car was special ordered I don't buy the "it sat in the yard" story.
The extensive rust on the ball joint bolts is troubling, possibly a safety issue. I would press to get them replaced under warranty. I disagree that the rust on the suspension components is a safety issue but agree it is unacceptable on $93K Redeye Hellcat. I would suggest that rather than purchase new suspension components (they will likely rust just as the originals did) that you remove, media blast, and paint the components. It will look sharp and give you the least rusty Challenger suspension on the road.
While I may disagree with you on the safety issue I am in agreement and sympathize with you that the undercarriage or your Hellcat should not appear as it does. Ironically I have been contemplating ordering an Indigo Blue Redeye Hellcat for several months. Your video won't dissuade me but if I order one I will give a minimal deposit and examine it on the lift before taking delivery. If it looks like yours they can put it back on the truck.
    Good luck Paul.

So the small circle inside of the rotor - that’s part of the hub, that isn’t the rotor itself. And talking about rotors coming from the factory coated in rust - chrysler rotors come coated in a grey material(You can even see it on the outside edge and inner diameter of the rotor where the pads never reach) to protect them during shipping and to break in the pads, I am a chrysler tech and EVERY rotor comes this way, if you see shiny rotors, then that means the pads have grabbed the rotor at least once. Once that shiny metal is exposed, rust will accumulate. I can park my car for a week outside with shiny rotors then come back to see rust, but that’s okay as it is just surface rust and when you brake for the first time the rust comes right off.

I'd say the car hauler drove that down in a multi day constant spray from salty wet roads. And the car got soaked in salt. They will corrode almost immediately from salty wet roads. It's all about the quality of the steel. The higher grade bolts are less prone to rust than cheaper ones etc... The cheaper the steel (the more inferior the steel) the more it will rust. Porsche chassis and parts are hot dipped or something like that and also use a lot of galvanized, stainless, and aluminum parts. (no rust under my Boxster S) It is rare to see rust on higher end euro cars. Even if they are driven in the salt. Your car was made with cheap steel and forged components. And they weren't hot dipped, or coated at all. At the very least they should have a waxy spray coating to keep rust at bay for a few years. Get your new parts and the underbody of the car treated by a dealer that uses Krown rust preventer. May be hard to find in your area but common up north. Also you will have trouble bleeding your brakes and everything. My last Dodge Ram diesel was not old and rusted out bad. The dealer told me they could not bleed the brakes or adjust the headlight angle the parts were that rusty. It was 3 years old. Our 9 year old Volkswagon diesel Jetta has no rust under it anywhere and it is driven in the northeast and not treated with anything. The Euro cars have much higher quality metals and treatments. Think about the last time you saw a Jetta with the fenders rusted out (never) and the last time you saw a Ram truck with the fenders rusted out (literally every day here in PA). This is shitty. You have the right to be disgusted. I would be sick in my stomach to see that.

The Demon I ordered was delivered in mid Jan. 2018, it had a white residue (salt?)under the car and the same rust you described, I THOROUGHLY cleaned the undercarriage and wire wheeled all the rust off everything, it was all surface rust, used touch up to detail and a rust prevent on all the parts to keep the parts free of future rust. I knew what I had to do but I shouldn’t have to go to that extreme on a new car!

well for one... could be wrong but the RT bushing housing almost appeared to have a galvanized coating to it could be that they skimped out on that on the SRT. But I wouldn't say that I would expect that stock factory parts are that great anyway. But either way I would be upset too which is why my 08 car has been 1/2 apart in my garage for 3 years as I am repainting everything on it.

I have worked on various cars for over a decade. Having surface rust is completely normal. What I see here is surface rust. If you want to see rust issues go look underneath a car in Chicago. If you don’t want to see rust then you would need to apply some sort of undercoating like what people do in the salt belt. The car from what I have read is built in Canada so it’s certainly possible that could be rust from transporting. Just saying.

I had a $109k 2009 Mercedes E63. Rotors would flash rust after a rainstorm or car wash within hours. Bushings would have surface within months but since they were consumable items, it never mattered because they were replaced with normal maintenance. As for your contention about this is not normal for a 'new car'. The car is only 'new' to you. It may have been built 4 months ago and sitting outside waiting to be shipped. If you're unhappy, sell the car. Otherwise, stfu and drive it.

I looked under the car just to check it out and I have these rust spots too, the exhaust also, it definitely looks like it is covered with dust underneath( I live in SC, no salt over here). These cars are build in canada so they probably were transported through some crappy weather with salt all over the place. I’m gonna hose the undercarriage off and spray some wd40 on and be done with it. Was disappointed to see it though, especially after spending this much money.

I purchased aftermarket lower torque arms for the rearend and they had the same kind of bushing uncoated. Yes the manufactures are half assing coating the undercarriage to save a buck wich really sucks for the consumer.

Oh Paul. Do you really think they care what you don't like? Answer == No!
"THAT'S NOT NORMAL" You're looking at a 2019 car and comparing it to a 2015 car. They save money where ever they can. The metal or the coating they are using in 2019 is totally different from what they used in 2015. So your statement "THAT'S NOT NORMAL" Is incorrect. It is normal for a 2019. Now, Is it right that it's that way? Answer == No.
I can't answer that part really. But I don't think so?
Yes. Everything you just videoed is just surface rust. Scrape, sand some off. You'll see that 99% of the rusted area's do not have pitting going on under the "surface" rust. I mean, how many of us told you "NOT" to buy another Dodge. But you went ahead and spent another 100k on another Dodge. Now you're not happy with the product you bought.
I wish you would have asked some of us if we would like to bet that you'll be happy with your new car. I'm pretty sure I would have taken that bet.
I'll also bet they don't leave them sitting outside for any length of time. They more than likely do assemble them then install as a unit. But outside for any length of time. I highly doubt it.
So what are you going to do now? If you go out and purchase all new parts that have no surface rust. Install them. A month or two down the road. They'll be rusted again! If you are going to replace all of them. Take them down to the powder coating place first. Powder coat them a stock silver. Them a few years down the road. They will look brand new. Just like a "Normal" 100k car should. Not a Dodge car. They will always be cheap somewhere. This is your "Where"
    What's next?
