I had zero expectations for Chloe Gong’s The Violent Delights as soon as I saw the plot summary, just because it sounds ridiculous and very detached from Shanghai. (Doesn’t help that I hate YA in general) The ill marriage between the plot and the setting doomed the book imo. Having grown up in East Asia the book definitely reads like it was written by someone unfamiliar with the culture and did not grow up in it, and just wanted to use the place as a backdrop without delving into and utilizing the cultural background for the story, which was subsequently proven when I went to look up the author’s bio.
I would however recommend a book of the same title that came out just a little bit before Chloe Gong’s - These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever. It’s “dark academia”, and an overall enjoyable and well written book 📚(and certainly less ridiculous/more believable of a plot and setting)

Oh noo I couldn’t find These Violent Delights I was so excited but the things you don’t like are usually things I really don’t like books either! Well I don’t feel too bad about not reading it yet! 🤷🏼♀️ I’ll just wait for when an audiobook comes out! 🤣

It's always so sad when a book has such a beautiful cover and then turns out to be not very good. I've been tricked a couple times and DNFed very beautiful books because I absolutely couldn't stand them. I guess that's why you aren't supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but... aesthetic haha
Oh wow Emma got more thoughtful presents from the internet family than most people get from their real families!
If I start getting too many problems, poor character development, cliche, or just crappy writing, I will not finish the book.
With that it is hard for me to give a book 1 or 2 stars. Those are the ones I do not finish.

Merry Christmas :) I recently read Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, which is a modern Antigone retelling. It really left an impact on me. Maybe you’d like it too :)
I didn't really like The Painted Girls either. I found the structure of the chapters grating and confusing. And yeah, it was definitely too long. I did like the focus on the sisterhood aspect though. Happy Holidays!

You should try the darkest minds. Alexandra Brackens writing style is phenomenal in my opinion and the book it’s self. The plot and the characters are just stunning. If you’re looking to read anything please read this book.

to be honest, I am currently halfway through These violent delights and I am enjoying it, but just like you said, Juliette is a bit hypocritical. For example, in this one scene, (not really a spoiler) they're driving to a very luxury party and they're driving through this very poor part of Shanghai, and she literally sees people dying and crying on the streets and she's like "I can't even look at it, I feel so sorry" but then does NOTHING about it. It feels like the author tries to make her seem very empathetic but doesn't take it further (doesn't make her actually do many things about it). I think Juliette feels as sorry as someone who has been born into a rich family can feel. Just my thoughts.

I can't stand books that refuse to use contractions in their dialogue... it makes it sound so awkward and disjointed which makes the book difficult to enjoy
