  • Ukraine has been demanding fighter jets for months and is finally starting to get some. Poland needed Germany's approval to hand over its MIG-29 planes, but Berlin gave its blessing and deliveries are reportedly underway.
Slovakia is also donating some of its fighter jets.
Is the Soviet-era fighter jet enough to change the course of the war?

The Mig-29 is without a doubt an elegant aircraft, but also kind of bulky at certain angles. I think that, for example, the F-14 Tomcat is better proportioned and was clearly an inspiration for the Mig-29 (where the F-4 Phantom was becoming old-fashioned). The challenge for the Mig-29 was that when we got to 1981 when the aircraft entered service, the US was only two years away from the F/A-18 Hornet entering service. Admittedly the F/A-18 is not an elegant looking aircraft, but technologically the F/A-18 was at least a couple of generations ahead of the Mig-29 and variants of the aircraft.

Cheap and doesnt really cost the US anything if they lost half of them tomorrow.... BUT it was perfect for missions in Iraq and against ISIS when you dont have air control and your enemy has huge numbers of anti air its terrible and would achieve nothing. Good thing is yes it would probably fly back to base heavily damaged it is the most protected aircraft in the world huge redundancy, many engines and heaps of armour also optimized for lift and slow speed handing so very stable but how will you use it? it fires maverick 50km range anti tank missles and 30mm 3km range Cannon with just sidewinder for defence its also slow at 350 MPH or 520 km hour cruise speed. Any jet can shoot it down and any medium range anti air like THOR will shoot it down eventually even if it survives teh first few hits. you cant get in close enough with those aircraft in 2023 and there too slow and useless for taking out drones. A drone is basically the same plane as an A-10 today in mission and size and speed just with far less armour, the drone can do the A-10 mission now and anti tank missles like Javelin make using A10's for tank busting too dangerous

The plane is old. The design is old but the avionics inside should be pretty _'modern'_ by todays standards. These MIGs should have seen their last update in either 2015 or 2019 (I think 2019...) which pushed them up to the NATO standard of interoperability between NATO countries.
MIG-29s are very good planes which is a total credit to her original designers. They are fast, they are manurable and very agile. The engines might be less efficient compared to more modern planes of similar design and role but thats to be expected with something from the 70s.
The way you speak of it is as if Estonia and Poland are sending them Spitfires, Hurricanes and P-51s to fight Russian Jets... Its not like that at all.
If Ukrainian pilots have good training and experience. They will dominate or fight just as well in the MIG-29 compared to their Russian counterparts.
*Also as point of note:* Estonia only retired their fleet of MIG-29's because America offered them 20 or 30 F-16s to replace them. If USA hadnt offered. Estonia would have kept their MIGs flying. Im not sure about Poland and their MIGs, Maybe the were offered the same deal from the USA but Poland being close to Germany, I think they would have been offered Eurofighters instead.
The only thing I dont know is how long Estonia and Poland have had their MIGs and if the airframes are still within the MTBF (mean time before failure) - Airframes have a life span and a lot of flying hours and high G pulls can cause microcracks/fractures in the frame as well as fatigue/weakness of the airframe/chassis - ultimately meaning that the plane is no longer completely safe to fly.
I agree that a Gripen would be a very very good option for Ukraine.

Australia was the best country to get upgraded F18's. These were all retired in 2021 and are in storage, they had a private buyer in the US for pilot aggressor training but that has not gone through yet or is held up by the US regulations. Australia had about 72 , Canada took the best 18 or so and there are over 50 left. These were upgraded with a special frame extention overhual called the HUG program around 2008 that increased there flight hours a lot and made the frame even stronger. They had the best non AESA radar of any hornet and were upgraded a lot , they would be perfect for Ukraine as they are available right now as Australia already almost has its full load of new F35s already ( they were an early buyer). Australia would still have also all the pilots too that can still fly and train and maintance the aircraft it was only taken offline completely in January 2022. Just 40 of these would make a good difference for Ukraine as no other western aircraft can use so many different missles and bombs the F18 can do everything well and has a very robust frame with 2 engines and great low speed handling. Malaysia also has 8 they could donate they dont use it anymore , yet there too close and friendly with Russia with many Russian weapons in there military. Canada is not ready to part with theres , Finland has the newest ones last production run but id say the US military with 40 hornets from Australia could set Ukraine up fine... later on they could easily get another 120 from Canada and finland as they retire there fleets. 150 hornets for an Air force the size of Ukraine is more then enough and still a capable fleet . The problem for Ukraine is that they're running low on ammunition for their long range air defense assets, something that NATO just doesn't really make, and Russia is attacking Ukraine from beyond the range of the non-sovirt era air defenses of Ukraine.

Hit ‘em in the back with small recon and small unit operations and punch ‘em in the face at the front door hitting them with two prongs with the help of GMLRS missiles. They do have a fair amount of HIMARS and MLRS systems now. The Ukrainians know where and how dug-in they are. Who knows what it would look like but the Ukrainians have war gamed this to the point, where if history repeats itself, they will take the objectives that they have set for themselves. They held the Russian by the neck in Bakhmut and gave him a bloody nose and confused him, and they took casualties to achieve that. The problems are that these Migs are all 32 years old or more. The Russians at least managed to build some after the break up of the Soviet Union, but they all went to the Russian AirForce. The last brand new aircraft to join the Ukrainian AirForce I think was a Mig29, and that occurred in 1991. The ones Poland, Slovakia had and the ones Germany inherited from East Germany were likely built in the 1980s. At least Ukraine can use these almost straight away, but they are old and rickety airframes and all of them would today probably be in the process of being replaced if it were possible.

To briefly write down my view of things in Bakhmut.
First of all, the city is not yet in a kettle. Since both roads, both the one through Khromovo and the road to Ivanivske, are not yet under Wagner's full control.
But it is evident that the battle for Bakhmut is slowly but surely coming to an end. UA is being pushed more and more west. The target field for artillery is getting smaller and smaller, which brings clear advantages for Wagner + RU units. UA has an enormous disadvantage in this area anyway in terms of artillery.
In addition, the reserves in Chasov Yar, Konstantinovka, Kramatorsk, Slavyansk and Druzhkovka have been successfully hit for weeks. This makes it difficult for UA to send more reserves to Bakhmut anyway.
But now there are fights on both supply routes. At Ivanivske very close to the road. At Khromovo directly on the street.
So only 90% dirt roads remain.
Now we come to a crucial point. It's starting to rain more for the next few days. Which makes dirt roads very difficult to pass again. In addition, all exits from Bakhmut are under RU fire control anyway.
So if UA want to leave Bakhmut (which I personally don't think they will) but they should, they would have to withdraw in the coming hours or tomorrow. Since tomorrow evening the dirt roads will be impassable again.
So either they go now, or there will be very, very high losses for UA for almost all units that are still in the city.
Because of the weather alone, a counter-offensive in the Bakhmut area makes 0.0 sense at the moment. Since this would not end successfully with 99%, because a lot of the equipment would simply get stuck in the mud.
I'm curious what will happen in the coming days.

Look the airframe is Mig-29 but you could retrofit it to modernize it in a sense. it won't have the stealth capabilities of the F35 but it could hypothetically have the ECM, Guidance systems and Radom of F35 implanted into that airframe.. As always the risk in giving these systems to Ukraine is that they could be reverse engineered and exported to hostile countries. Its interesting how the Arab League Countries , who Ukraine always votes for, never supplies them with anything, it all falls on the west (And no followup on Egypt selling weapons to Russia, but if it was a country like Israel doing that they'd probably never hear the end of it) . So I guess what I'm saying is that Zelenski needs to give more assurances and loyalty to countries who are willing to provide help, Why hand off F35 tech when it could easily end up at the wrong hands?

It generally isn't a great idea to be using aircraft built by the country that you are fighting with
Western aircraft would be a better option for Ukraine, since we would then be better positioned to resupply/repair such aircraft

It isn't like we don't have thousands of them and they are aging out of our air force
