Nice video, you made a couple of good comments about FreeCad, how it's sometimes hard to find machining options in the settings but are available in the Data section and the terminology used for some of the setting options, but it's good to see some of the Go Arounds you mentioned. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

What you're describing as rest machining is usually called something more like "stock aware" machining in other CAM systems. Rest machining is usually to allow roughing with a large diameter cutter, and then going back with a small diameter cutter to finish the corners or narrow passages. Rest machining in all the other CAM packages I've used has the primary and the rest operations happening on the very same selected feature. I wonder if that is the case with FreeCAD Path.

@@Adam-tq5rs yes, that's exactly the idea. Sorry if I didn't explain that correctly. First use an operation to make most of the cutting, then use another operation to clean what was left. No matter if you use a different operation or a different tool bit

@@opensourcecnc I just wonder if the reason it doesn't work the way you expect, is because in most CAM software rest machining isn't meant to work in the situations you tried to use it. In other CAM packages, if you pick a different feature to run the rest machining on, it won't work, in the same way it isn't working in your video.

@@Adam-tq5rs I've tried to use it using the same operation, it does the same

@@opensourcecnc I made a response video showing what I meant. It appears to me that the rest machining in FreeCAD works similarly to how other CAM packages interpret rest machining. ua-cam.com/video/EPXYWb7HLgs/v-deo.html

For the rest machining - maybe a work-around is to just set the starting height for the 2nd pocket operation to the bottom of the outer pocket? Not ideal, but maybe that would work.

This works, I've been using it for quite a while. But the nice thing about rest machining is that it does it by itself and (should) update everything if you make a change along the chain. Setting it manually would mean you would have to remember to change it after modifying one of the previous operations. Well, I'm sure it will be solved

man i wish they would polish the cam workbench more. i really want to switch to freecad but the workflow is still not good enough :(

They will get there. If they don't, there will show up a fork that will focus on those things
