  • My maternal grandfather served his country in World War II as a cook for the Illinois militia (later National Guard) at Fort Sheridan near Chicago, Illinois. He was too old for the regular infantry, but was able to serve as a part of the state militia on the homefront. Fort Sheridan was officially closed in 1993. It took almost 30 years, but I was finally able to take my mother and visit this site where my grandpa was stationed and served. The fort is no longer here, but there are remnants of the former base all around. The area is a national historic landmark district and has at least one structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, much of the grounds has been transformed into a nature preserve filled with hiking trails, bike paths, playgrounds, and more.

I enjoy roadside attractions, Americana, historical sites, theme parks, and quirky places of interest. Although I tend to focus on travel, history, literature, theatre, and film, my interests are vast. I particularly enjoy visiting the weird and unusual; the places and things sometimes overlooked. There are stories and history all around us. It is my goal to unlock these stories and share them with the world.
