As the last speaker on the proposition Michael Irwin begins by saying he himself would be interested in the option to have a doctor assisted suicide. He mentions he has accompanied people to Dignitas in Switzerland two of which were terminally ill and had dignified deaths, another was a man who was severely disabled and the last was a personal friend of his with progressive arthritis. He says that this isn't an issue of law but one of a human right. He states that the opposition says that this is a slippery slope, but this is a good slippery slope that will allow the terminally ill, the disabled and the elderly to have comfort in a choice to end their life on their own terms. He concludes that when you think about it, good palliative care is an example of doctor assisted dying.

What if you simply do not want to grow old and frail? What if you simply want to control how and when you die ?
I honestly think this option should apply to more than just the terminally I'll people.
To me wasting away in a nursing home or stuck to a bed all day is worse than death.

This is what happens when people don't actually bother to improve their mental healthcare facilities and actually try to help people. I get that assisted dying would make sense when someone is terminally ill, but allowing people to just die just because they wanted to? Isn't this the same thing we have been trying to prevent for decades through mental health programs???

You are making a claim that the only kind of person who would want to die has to be mentally ill. This is tautological. What if someone just weighs out the positives and negatives in life and thinks that death is preferable to life? What right have you to tell another person whether they should live or die? Should people live for your sake?

When you send a soldier to war. .. he signs the line knowing he may die. And believe me we think of this when we land. We dont have fear of what you find the most fearful. Where is your faith? Don't you trust that you will have a heaven waiting for you. Or is it that you know you won't have that and your running from yourself.

You think those poison pills they just invented are going to "fix" everyone's minds? They barely know how the mind works. Many rich and famous people with access to all the best doctors around the world kill themselves. Also, what about people with serious medical conditions, do you know what it is like to have ALS?
