Only little birds like vehicles with miniguns and unguided rockets. Where if you go for an attack you are vulnerable. Apache, KAs style helicopters with their atgms and independent cannon traverse would be op or useless depending what aa you would add. I feel like the combat units and map voting is going to cause a meta to develop, which I don't think will be healthy for the game. People are only gonna vote for whatever the best combat unit is, making it hard to experience the rest of them. Just by looking at what equipment is going to be available to each unit it's readily obvious that there are good choices and bad choices. Doesn't sound fun from a gameplay perspective, despite sounding like a good idea from a surface level.
The only way it's gonna work is if the dev have though about it in term of "infantry artillery horsemen" where 1 group is strong only because of the choice of the opponent.
Even if the worst case comes true with this, it will still be better than the current system of mirroring vehicle rosters and very little change layer to layer.
I wouldn't be against conditional exclusions for some factions. E.g. if Team 1 picks light Infantry, team 2 can't pick heavy armour to squash them, but can still pick Motorised or Mechanised. Could make for interesting tactical choices for your team's loadout if you know armour is powerful for the opposing team on certain maps.
It is absolutely fun to be able to chose yourself, but some divisions definitely are just plain better than others. For example, on Falluja you could pick a Rus brigade with two instant T72s and two BMP2s right off the bat and go clear the map with minimal resistance - or a Turkish faction that has no access to heavy AT with only a single Pars 25mm and one M60 tank on delayed spawn. When we played that we got stomped to the stoneage, with not a single death and 100+ kills between the enemy vic squads. It was kind of exciting because every time you heard armor approaching it was like the preamble to a boss fight, but at the same time being camped on nearly every hab by unkillable armor was not fun.

Gotta be honest. While all those changes are really neat(really look forward to more BLUFOR v BLUFOR layouts that look like wargames), I am not really fond of the changes made on the Leopard 2's gunner sight. Personal opinion, but a good fix could have been an automatic rangefinder on the commander seat and it's synchronised with the gunner sight. However, it should be a one-way(commander-to-gunner and not viceversa). This could have convinced people to work with a 3-crewmen setup for tanks more and would have improved the role of the commander seat on the Leo which lacks of a RWS system. The Challenger makes it up by having a fourth seat for the RWS.
For the voting I just hope recently used factions are blocked for at least the next round so you don't play the same units over and over. Also @MoiDawg does the last winner or loser pick first?
I love the map layer changes but I really want OWI to get rid of named layers as a whole. It's not really rewarding to do it and it's super punishing to new players who are confused why they can't capture the only point they can spawn on. TLDR: Objectives should be random or unknown unless you are playing AAS.
It really doesnt take that much thinking to see why this isnt possible. A map only has so many points of interest that make for good objectives, and they have to follow a semi predictable chain or they will be a horrible zigzag (which still happens rarely and is annoying) the best thing moving forwards is to atleast give equal information and show squadlanes ingame for those who still haven't memorized every map and choose to not use the app.

I was loyal player from early Beta, played almost every day. Then ICO hit and I like many others thought it was quite awful. Haven't played a full 5 matches since ICO dropped, as I couldn't get it to grow on me. These updates may actually be what I needed though
Some great changes but I'm worried about about certain factions getting sidelined, a lot of people out there don't care for MEA PLA UK and even insurgents and I hope we dont get just US RUS games and a meta forms.
Back in my day, a good leopard gunner was worth his weight in gold. I'm gna miss the old leopard sight, it added extra bragging rights to the war stories.
All of those are good fixes and adds. One thing I have noticed that in Sanxian islands invasion layer the invaders start with 800 tickets while the defending team only has 200. That is a bit bugged
I hope that the map and unit voting can be made somewhat partial. Something like every other round and random picks in between. Otherwise its going to get real old fast.
With the Specialized Combat Units, Squad's probably going to be rolling out some balance passes every once in a while, to adjust for strength like a lot of online pvp games. Imagine if they internally were tracking statistics to find out what needs buffed and nerfed.
I had a lot of fun playing Squad last night, with the exception of the map and faction voting. Good feature, but flawed in that it takes way too long to submit. Each vote phase should be like 15 seconds max, not 1-2 minutes. Last night people kept re rolling like 2 or 3 times in a row because they didnt like the PLA. Also i'm not sure if it was the server, but the staging time took considerably longer.
it would be neat if they add the older AUG as a thing to some of the sub unit types (non front line non infentry etc.), if they are takeing out most layers and only adding special layers later I worry the AUG will be out of use until this is added
The only downside to map voting is it takes a little bit too long, maybe decrease the timers, or if you re roll reduce the timer, but that's just nit picking
To avoid radio spamming while on map voting. Players should have the ability to mute players who spam voice chat or server should have script to mute players who spam voice chat for morethan 30-60seconds..
the lack Modern FCS in Tanks is really something that bothers me in squad, yeah it increases the skill required, but also nerfs tanks a lot, and im not even speaking about auto-lead just ranging...
While the Stryker MGS addition is awesome I would have preferred the Stryker Dragoon which has a Unmanned turret with a 30mm. The 2nd cav hasn’t used the MGS for years now, they started getting Stryker Dragoons like 7 ago
The names were used but in practice they had minimal effect on the vehicle lists. Now the differences are far more drastic, have changes beyond just vehicles, with more differences suggested down the line, and of course the assymetry of it.
As ico, let say, doubter, I am glad to see OWI listen to reasonible player feedback and adjusting weapon handeling. I can't quite be sure if these changes go far enough until I have tried it myself, but it looks a loot better. I was starting to get concerned considering pretty much all the feedback I saw was either "The ico is the best thing ever!" or "Revert the ico!", with almost no nauonced disscusion of how these changes. So I hope after this update people will be willing to criticley evaulate the weapon handling and be more willing to consider the possibilty that it had (or maybe still has) significant room for improvment.
3:55 im curiouswho would chose a Support unit into a active battle scenario without ability to chose another unit, like why would you chose an auxilary unit for a frontline battle?😮
Really wonder when they will fix the comical sight pictures of many weapons. You do not glue your eye to the aperture. Other games manage, i wonder why squad cannot.
Heck yeah door gunners on helicopters being more effective. Great fix! Maybe we can shoot from Logi’s on next update. Gun trucks with a whole squad shooting back like they did in Vietnam!
Whats about the weather and daytime setting for maps? It was locked to layers before. Or is every map now sunny midday? I would love a random weather/time setting.
Personally i start to hate voting part, in theory you could get interesting layer or faction combo, in practice this solution have a decent amount of problems: - when you have less desired factions like MEA or Insurgents people tend to vote on same meta factions like USA or Russia, barely clicking other ones - today some joker yelled "hey vote TC", which is not popular at all for various reasons, as a result server died, pure fun, yesterday guys won with some British light infantry at Sanxian, while enemies had full amphibious setup - rework of faction variants limited layers with vehicle heavy layers and people who dont know what each variant mean, can fuck up whole map when you go light vehicles vs heavy for no particular reason - each faction have less logistics than before, like some of them kept 3 logi, while most have now 2 only+1heli, as a result its harder to refill habs or prepare counteroffensive if you rely on very limited amount of vehicles -choices are like: You wanna these Chinese soldiers or these Chinese marines, while no other faction choice, or you get 4 American variants, 1 Ins, 1 MEA, as a result none of last two stand a chance vs America, i would like to see Blufor which dont consist most popular choices to make less popular countries less obsolete
I love the faction sub-unit additon. However, it seems rather nonsensical to me to have Lord Strathcona's Horse/LdSH having their own subunit within the Canadians: LdSH is a subunit of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group/1 CMBG which has it's own sub-faction class now. Not only that, LdSH is just an understrength tank regiment along with some armored recce/cavalry subunits that operate as a Brigade Reconnaissance asset. They don't have any dismounted infantry as they attach themselves to PPCLI subunits to help form combat teams. In terms of reflecting the units IRL, it just doesn't make sense having them as a stand-alone sub-unit/sub-faction.
The changes are pretty cool but NGL, the number of clueless people joining making squad names like "did they fix the game" and just going on and on, and being frankly...awful at the game at the same time are making it hard to play atm :P
man the urge to play squad has never been bigger and ofc my pc breaks during it, oh well just another excuse for another build. Cant wait to see what squad has in the works next
I don't know how I feel about the voting system yet because it takes so long espescially if both teams reroll. I think it would be better for the faction selection to be at the same time and not one after the other
Thank goodness! After about a year away from Squad I got back in a lobby and pulled out the trusty Mosin. It was basically unplayable. It's a truly an embarrassing state of a game when I, a sweaty university student have better control over my Mosin IRL than this video game character.
"If you like holding weapon straight again?" - Moi Dawg. This is all I wanted, I'm going to have to play more to see if it's enough. FPS game developer's should adopt this mantra "Realism(or emersion) as playable(or fun)". You can do realism or add emersion without making the game suck. I'm not a fan of how far ICO went off the deep end, and they are just now starting to find their way back. I also have a theory or a feeling that there is desync with ICO mechanics (for example: weapon sway) becoming desynced between Client (player) and server (the server:). Even Tarkov went through a period of time where they were trying to increase "Realism" and changed recoil. Which took agency of the player over their weapon away from the player. They in the past what 8 months from now (from: 3/20/2024), reworked recoil and brought it back more in line with "Playable" than "Realism". Guns in Tarkov have less recoil and the agency back to the player. ICO has removed a lot of agency away from the player. The mouse feels disconnected from the rifle. Squad is now starting to put gunplay agency back to the player. This is a good thing because it is a shooting game anyways. I hope they keep tweaking ICO until it puts enough agency back to the player and it can without losing the emersion that ICO was intended to be (IMO). Squad went to far towards a larpers game and it needs to come back a bit to a gamers game :) All in all good changes they are really headed in the right direction. And great video Moi, thanks for the info. Cheers!

@@_Tristen_ shitposting was never ever been that effective. 😂
@@_Tristen_ Thats so bullshit.
The suppresion was the best part of the game past the ICO. It made you acc play it normally. It was so much fun.
Now you have blueberries just lasering people down while literal bullets wizz past them without giving af.
Its so goofy
@@honkhonk8009yeah it's fucking annoying. They need stop giving in to the COD lovers and listen to the marines and vets and bring back the realism they need bring back ico test version the very first one or second was one best. They just kept going n going n tweaking it to much. Head to forums and have your say about suppression please.
I love the specialized brigades, adds more variety to the game while still being realistic. Awesome!
Back in my day, a good leopard gunner was worth his weight in gold.
I'm gna miss the old leopard sight, it added extra bragging rights to the war stories.
Democracy ruined this game,.Literally. People keep playing the same maps, same factions...
All of those are good fixes and adds. One thing I have noticed that in Sanxian islands invasion layer the invaders start with 800 tickets while the defending team only has 200. That is a bit bugged
Map voting is just amazing
I really wish that OWI will update some of the old factions
Yeah uk sucks
@@gurra5666 they should get a Mastiff and cage armor for there vehicles. Also some more stabilized weapons
great vids man. you got me into playing this game! i love it
Oooo man, im soo exicited, there''s no time to test everything now ;) good vid moi
They should add the rifles regiment for BAF Light infantry
Not being able to hear other people pres the horn makes me so happy ❤
The RPG reload bug has gotten me killed so many times and more times over, made me miss big opportunities. Thank. God.
All updates are game-changing
Huge W update - hope they will add specialized weapon/loadouts to the sub-factions next.
LOVE ALL OF THIS!
Loving the changes ...keep moving forward OWI....now about those grappling hooks for the engineer.....
nooooo they ruined the historical sights for the leo😭
Less bragging rights too my brethren.
Playing Squad since almost its creation I would love to see a video or some kind of summary that shows how the game evolved.
Might finally be able to see a BAF Tank Brigade fighting the VDV on Harju RAAS (East) 👌
I have almost 2000 hours but haven’t played much after the ICO update but this makes me want to come play.
it would be neat if they add the older AUG as a thing to some of the sub unit types (non front line non infentry etc.), if they are takeing out most layers and only adding special layers later I worry the AUG will be out of use until this is added
The only downside to map voting is it takes a little bit too long, maybe decrease the timers, or if you re roll reduce the timer, but that's just nit picking
It's configurable server side :)
Over all great update. Can't wait to jump back in, been helldiving for weeks now.
To avoid radio spamming while on map voting. Players should have the ability to mute players who spam voice chat or server should have script to mute players who spam voice chat for morethan 30-60seconds..
The only downside imo is the 10 min heli respawn, they can get shot down so easily so i dont get making the respawn longer
the lack Modern FCS in Tanks is really something that bothers me in squad, yeah it increases the skill required, but also nerfs tanks a lot, and im not even speaking about auto-lead just ranging...
Looks great!
While the Stryker MGS addition is awesome I would have preferred the Stryker Dragoon which has a Unmanned turret with a 30mm. The 2nd cav hasn’t used the MGS for years now, they started getting Stryker Dragoons like 7 ago
so now aiming takes 1 business day instead of 2, great change !
weren't the sub-factions aka battalions already in game? that's how you'd know if there were 2 or more tanks etc
The names were used but in practice they had minimal effect on the vehicle lists. Now the differences are far more drastic, have changes beyond just vehicles, with more differences suggested down the line, and of course the assymetry of it.
yeah but they didnt have specific vehicles or weapons attached to them
Yeah but they were just used as names only, they had no real effect. Helped with immersion though
So I hope after this update people will be willing to criticley evaulate the weapon handling and be more willing to consider the possibilty that it had (or maybe still has) significant room for improvment.
oh my goooood the honk is the BEST thing in this update!!!!
3:55 im curiouswho would chose a Support unit into a active battle scenario without ability to chose another unit, like why would you chose an auxilary unit for a frontline battle?😮
This update is going to be awesome and i do like the idea of sub factions and such.
Vehicle combat overhaul needs to come soon to help with the natural balance!
this update is sick man honestyly bongers
Really wonder when they will fix the comical sight pictures of many weapons. You do not glue your eye to the aperture. Other games manage, i wonder why squad cannot.
Heck yeah door gunners on helicopters being more effective. Great fix! Maybe we can shoot from Logi’s on next update. Gun trucks with a whole squad shooting back like they did in Vietnam!
Lemme know when they properly implement track IR and hotas support for helicopters.
there looks like no difference in the stamina sway minus the first couple seconds?
Whats about the weather and daytime setting for maps? It was locked to layers before. Or is every map now sunny midday? I would love a random weather/time setting.
So won't team 2 have a leg up?? They get to see the selection from team 2 before they pick their army composition??
Personally i start to hate voting part, in theory you could get interesting layer or faction combo, in practice this solution have a decent amount of problems:
- when you have less desired factions like MEA or Insurgents people tend to vote on same meta factions like USA or Russia, barely clicking other ones
- today some joker yelled "hey vote TC", which is not popular at all for various reasons, as a result server died, pure fun, yesterday guys won with some British light infantry at Sanxian, while enemies had full amphibious setup
- rework of faction variants limited layers with vehicle heavy layers and people who dont know what each variant mean, can fuck up whole map when you go light vehicles vs heavy for no particular reason
- each faction have less logistics than before, like some of them kept 3 logi, while most have now 2 only+1heli, as a result its harder to refill habs or prepare counteroffensive if you rely on very limited amount of vehicles
-choices are like: You wanna these Chinese soldiers or these Chinese marines, while no other faction choice, or you get 4 American variants, 1 Ins, 1 MEA, as a result none of last two stand a chance vs America, i would like to see Blufor which dont consist most popular choices to make less popular countries less obsolete
MGS is cool and all but I have not seen anyone vote for the unit that has it. I've only been able to try it in the test range.
The changes are pretty cool
but NGL, the number of clueless people joining making squad names like "did they fix the game" and just going on and on, and being frankly...awful at the game at the same time are making it hard to play atm :P
man the urge to play squad has never been bigger and ofc my pc breaks during it, oh well just another excuse for another build. Cant wait to see what squad has in the works next
I don't know how I feel about the voting system yet because it takes so long espescially if both teams reroll. I think it would be better for the faction selection to be at the same time and not one after the other
map voting is great, but maybe on specific server the same map in voting should not appear at least for the next 3 maps or something similar.
Did they ever add roping out of the helicopters?
Why is the horn client side? just give it a cooldown after 3 honks or whatever
Ahhh they finally fixed the helicopter MG traversal!
Crazy it took this long.
All great but lets just hope some day they will work on stability and performance.
Squad went to far towards a larpers game and it needs to come back a bit to a gamers game :)
All in all good changes they are really headed in the right direction. And great video Moi, thanks for the info.
Cheers!
This update is CRAZY even crazier than combat over haul i need a better PC 😫
