  • There are many myths & misconceptions about the UK that get on our nerves. Just a bit. But because we are polite and British and would rather roll in cow poo than confront anyone, we have saved them up and made a podcast about them.
Here are 7 of the most common misconceptions about life in the United Kingdom.
We moved to New Zealand with our kids 12 years ago. It was the best thing we ever did and we want to help you do the same.

It rains more in Perth than it does in NZ now, when I moved here,it was sunny 11 months of the year, now it rains for weeks non stop,it's been raining here for 3 weeks now. This is a desert city as well. Thermal undies are a great invention.

My parents were Welsh. We emigrated here when I was 6, so I consider myself a New Zealander. I have lived in the UK (East Midlands) for the last 18 years. I have come back to live permanently now in NZ, and have been back for the last 6 months. Apparently, I sound a bit like an Englishman now. I find it difficult, as I do miss the UK, the lifestyle and my friends there. I will always consider myself a New Zealander though, but I do feel a real affection for the UK.

Thanks so much for sharing this Stephen, (after 18 years you must sound a little bit English!) I hope that you are enjoying being back in New Zealand and sending you thanks and love for taking the time to share your story 😊

So England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all separate counties. England, Scotland and Wales make up Great Britain. When you add Northern Ireland it then becomes The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. On the rain front I believe England has less annual rain fall in mm than a lot of Europe but we do have more rainy days throughout the year.

I agree, the rain in England is really mild. When I was living in England I remember a Kiwi friend of mine complaining about the English rain not being 'violent' enough. According to him, it was too boring. I hadn't really thought about it before, but I guess he's right.
A Sunday roast at an old pub in Oxford is something to die for. Also, the best curries. Top.
When I was working in Cheltenham, there were people from Bristol, Blackpool, Liverpool, Swindon, Birmingham etc. that I worked with every day, but my Kiwi colleague's and my accent were the only ones they made fun of. Everyone had complete different accents, why were our's strange? ;-) I like the Bristol, Brummy, and Scouser accents.
Ales are warm. Lagers should be chilled. Like red and white wine.
    Love your stuff.

In a nutshell John! I'm am now sitting here drooling thinking about a Sunday roast 🤣Funny you should say about the Brummie accent - like the Bristol one it is one of those that I have come to love since moving to New Zealand (PS: I wish Bri still talked with a scouse accent - I love it too!) Thanks for watching 😁

Nationality wise. I embrace both my homeland and New Zealand. Guess it is almost impossible for me not to have any affinity to my homeland because the grounding I had, even though it was only a quarter of my life, was and continue to be special in forming the person I am today. I watch a lot of You Tube channels from England such as "Gimbal Walk TV"...tourist spots, London Bus Channels, "Tom the Taxi Driver", Blackpool Channels, "A Walk on the Wild Side" and Lindas crowd, and a heap of narrow boat channels as well. My favourite is "Rate MY Takeaway" What I have learned about England is they do beachside areas very well, many Brits takeaways shops are still in original Brit family ownership, you can escape the rat race on a narrow boat and the traffic in London is shite...just like Auckland. But best of all, I love listening to all the different dialects especially as you go county to county on the canals. Love your videos and dont stop being you.

Looking at a map England seems about two thirds the size of the South Island.
It does rain lots in NZ.
Try living in Wellington, it's bloody wet, cold and windy.
British food during WW2 wasn't the best because of tough rations but apart from that it's great. Good cheeses.
You do sound more like Kiwis.
There are beautiful beaches in the UK, they're just too cold to swim at.

I've always found the food in the UK to be good quality, but fish and chips can be a bit hit and miss. The thing that shocked me the most is seeing people handling food with their bare hands,eg burger vans, thats something I'd never seen before and to this day I recoil inside when the cook hands me a bap,I still have the thought that he may have been scratching his arse minutes before.
Just to add,I've been in the UK for 17 years but always refer to myself as a Kiwi, and people always do a double take when I open my mouth....not because I've got bad teeth, but my south island accent hasn't changed a bit although I've picked up a few Englishisms....mucker.

Born in NZ, but I consider myself a Brit. Whenever I fly into NZ I get a feeling of dread, whenever I fly into Heathrow I well up as we fly over London and I have a feeling of being at home. And despite what some people say or think, British food is amongst the best in the world. Melton Mowbray pork pies, toad in the hole, black pudding, haggis, sausages...proper sausages, I'm afraid NZ sausages are complete rubbish when compared to a nice Cumberland or Lincolnshire sausage. Although I will admit, NZ sausages are way better than Aussie sausages.

My family traditions are a mixture of all and I can never honestly call anyone place home. My culture is a real fusion. Ok get this.
I was born in the 80s (that might be relèvent here) and when I’d fill out official state documents (education, employment, census…) under nationality, there was no case for « New Zealander »
Therefore I grew up calling myself « English ». Even though my mother was already 2nd generation kiwi!
Cut to 2005, we moved to France and I couldn’t say I was « English » coz that’s where people who live in England come from… and yeah i guess that’s completely logical. So at 25years old I finally felt like I knew who I was. A proud New Zealander.
Now a week ago I come across this it’s a drama UA-cam show (btw, why is it a drama Liz??!) A wee video about British habits pops up... And bloody hell!! ;) I don’t know who I am anymore! There’s more English in me than I give credit for.

Yes I still refer to myself as a Kiwi, but I have struggled when I first moved to the UK, to figure out what to call myself. I am technically British by descent, and for a short while I called myself a Kiwi-Brit, which is still in my Twitter profile. I've gotten over that and have come to the conclusion I'm just a Kiwi, though if someone complains about me making comments on British issues, I will point out I'm actually British, and not a foreigner, as that attitude annoys me.. I didn't move to London because I felt like I was moving back to the mother country, I moved here because I was curious about my roots. I have more family in the UK than I do in NZ, but I hardly know them, as nice as they are, except for my aunts family, whom I got to know a bit. I have to agree, despite some of my complaints about some of the food here, the food is really good. Then most of my complaints are to do with the fact I can't get some of the things I used to get in NZ, like Boysenberry Ice-cream, and decent avocados. Don't get me started on the supermarket chocolate you buy here, it's rubbish. Sorry the avocados in the UK I've had are not great, but then they are all imported. I have never thought the Brits were particularly prudish, any moire than Kiwis are, and that was before I moved to London. And yes, it got really hot here over the summers that I've been here. Till I moved to the UK, I'd never experienced temps above 30. I do think the summers here is more wet than I experienced in NZ, but that has more to do with where I lived in NZ, as it is different depending on where you are in NZ, just like the UK. Still most place in NZ that I've been to have long dry summers, with the odd bit of rain. Having said that, I've had some long dry periods here, except this year when it poured down almost ever week in summer. It is an odd year for weather I think.

Collect Stamps and you quickly find out who belongs to the UK and who is a separate Republic. You don't get the Queens head on Irish stamps: only Northern Ireland which is ruled by the England.

Northern Ireland isn't ruled by England! --- Both are part of the United Kingdom & it's the government of the United Kingdom that rules.

Worst and smelliest ever BAFlight to London. 747 from Montreal to London 1978 week before Christmas with 156 babies onboard. Best Museum food. The old Tate Elizabethan restaurant. QE I salad. Best pub food Smoked Salmon sandwich. Loved the Cutty Sark. The brass plaques on the side of buildings like Saxon printed the first English Bible here. Christmas Day 1978 finally finding a Chinese restaurant open in SoHo served the best Beijing duck I have ever eaten. The lights on Regent st. At Christmas. 1978 poor bastard illegally parked a big Jag on Regent St. Within seconds a Land Rover pulled up and the police threw a heavy net over the car. Oh the paint work. Outside the gates of
Buckingham palace at the changing of the guard. A group of Aussie blokes making a racket all half drunk. London Policewoman on horse back kneaded her horse forward very quietly and almost pressed two of the Aussies into the fence. Never said a word just quietly looked at them for a few seconds and then backed the horse away. Not a peep from them after that. Best crowd control I have ever seen. Walking through Bath. Opera at Covent Garden. Cold miserable day in York and going in an old pub to get warm. Brass plaque oh the wall. Guy Fawkes was born in this pub. Watching the All Blacks trouncing the English team. Going to Cornwall and seeing the farm my Grandfather left for N Z in 1852. Being amazed in London that the tube and busses stopped at midnight. Discovered that in my opinion NZ pies are better than the English. But I will give you thevCornish Pastie. Speakers Corner Hyde Park.Majesty of St Paul’s. imagine if Wren had been allowed to build all of the streets around it that he had planed. I know I laughed when someone pointed out to me the highest peak in Scotland but the highlands are beautiful. Another side of my family are Munros. Listening to the crowd sing the Welsh anthem in Cardiff at a Rugby test. V&A museum a week is not enough time. I think I had 7 holidays in GB and lived in London for 9 months during the 1965. But alway remember 1978. Left
Montreal at -30c and for three weeks in London wore the same jacket as I wore in Montreal but with the humidity in London it was much colder in London the cold penetrated everything. At probably + 5. And my favourite. One summer trip. My wife loved The actor Robert Taylor and she insisted we reenact the famous farewell scene from the movie Waterloo Bridge on the bridge. Didn’t work traffic noise was horrible and being so sentimental she couldn’t stop crying. But I give her an A for effort.

Aww I love all the accents and room temperature beer, I should be living in the UK. Plus I love that they're not obsessed with a generic plastic look and needing to be "somebody" 🙄😄

Yes, accents are something that makes you warm to people, isn't it? (Maybe that's why the beer is warm??! 🤣)

I thought HMTQ also has the right to those powers in all the 15 other realms and territories via her Governor Generals. They all flock down the beaches over here now when we have a bit of sun. We are prudish to a degree but we can let it all hang out as well. Also a very self depricating bunch. Take care for now.

    • @ItsaDrama

It's true! The self-deprecating thing is why I think we fit in in NZ...🥰I like being humble, it shocks people when they see what you can really do! 😉😁
