The Ambani wedding has captured headlines, but it's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to India's obsession with extravagant weddings. In this episode of Let Me Explain, we dive into the billion-dollar wedding industry and the societal pressures that support it by driving individuals and families alike into debt. We'll pull back the curtain on this ₹10 lakh crore industry, explore the financial strain on middle-class and poor families, often leading to debt traps, and understand the role of dowry in wedding expenses.
Join Pooja Prasanna as she examines the influence of high-profile weddings like the Ambanis on societal expectations and how various legislative efforts to limit wedding expenditures have fared over the years. From data on wedding loans to heart-wrenching stories of families driven to desperation, this episode sheds light on a crucial issue often overshadowed by the glitz and glamour of Indian weddings.

Sadly Indians like to impress. My son's friend is the Manager of a hotel in North East England. He had associated with Indians when he was younger but told me that he had never met any nationality as boastful/bragging as the Sikhs. During Wedding season the hotel is booked/every Sikh tells him they want to outshine the last family moneywise. Absolutely shameful Indians can never rid themselves of extreme inequality in societies.

The size of the wedding is not as important as the strength of the marriage. Pomp and show is nothing but vanity and so yesterday. Conserve your money if you are low on finances and learn to live for yourself, not others. God's blessing is the biggest wedding present and He is unmatched in magnificence.

Expensive weddings are top reason for debts in India, female foeticide, seeing girl as burden, fear for her wedding expenses, unreal pressure on parents, unrealistic pressure on men also to earn a lot and have such weddings for their kids, it is top reason why parents save for wedding of girl but do not spend on her education, youngsters keep comparing wealth and show off. I think even if rich people spend a lot they should not advertise it on media and social media. As it sets unrealistic standards for ordinary people who cannot afford it. They monetise weddings, use it for PR and to promote brands and designers. But forget what a bad impact it has on society. In Punjab also most farmer suicides are due to being buried in debt due to pricey weddings and expensive funerals (bhog/antim ardas).

    • @agnescraig2912

Lots of what you said makes sense if the society would be bereft of peer pressure and class tags. Unfortunately the society revels itself in showing off and relatives in a community trying to out-do each other at these rare occasions in life, right from printing that expensive invitation card ! which can outdo the last they saw. I have seen wedding card in itself as expensive as a meal in a good restaurant !
    Although,
I myself am the other extreme of austerity as I believe in life philosophy of simple living and high thinking rolled in with all sorts of social activism.
So I could not agree with you more
But then it also had me thinking
First targetting the extremely rich like Ambani ( although have always been anti reliance myself ) but here we cannot take their example. As their abnoxious( there was some sales counters also it seems 😮 ) pompous weddings is never taken as example by the 95% of indians nor are they influenced by it, they look at it as a grand news affair. So economically lower, middle class and upper middle class do not try to out do the super rich. So that worry is misplaced. So putting onus on super rich is not right.
People usually try to outdo others weddings held in their own class, community, so it is more of peer pressure I internally within communities, friends, relatives.
That being said then I started supporting big pompous weddings of the super rich as I look at it a a good way for wealth distribution, finally some trickledown theory effect 😂😂. & good for economy of several business associate with the business f marriage.
So back to a more serious note, it has more to do with peer pressure and own thinking about finances vs what will people think ? Savings one's own reputation among immediate peers.
So I feel the rules framed should be more towards equality of sexes and savings oriented than targetting the expenses directly as those rules would only create more police-ing than achieve positive results.
    Instead rules could be like
    1. Both parties need to bear 50% of the wedding expenses, this would lower the burden on girls family and bring a 'sense' of equity amd when both parties need to dish out, some outlandish demands from either side would be curbed and also promote equal responsibility, breaking the age-old 'ladki ke baap ki majboori' syndrome.
    2. An amount EQUAL to the weddings Total Expenses ( except assets created in land, vehicles gold ) is deposited in a 'MTA' account Fixed Deposit, Marriage Togetherness Account, locked for 10 years in a public sector bank earning 1 % more interest than normal FD, a higher interest gift to newly weds from banks, also this rule would emphasize the need to have savings equal to what they ate about to spend in the wedding or they would need to lower their spendings. Of course this rule need to be only applied if a lower exemption limit of 10Lakh is crossed in cities and 5 Lakh in villages
Of course, i understand that here would be people finding loopholes and ways and means to get around these rules, but then that is no deterrent to bringing in rules which make then society think in these directions. Such rules would be included in wedding plans mutual meetings and bring a social change towards equality and savings.
I have more points but already the post is too long...

Your ideas and the comments are true and welcome. However, whether is it possible to implement. For law abiding citizens and legally earned money personal it is applicable. Not for Industrialist, Black money holders and Politicians these laws are inapplicable. Take measures by your media how to prevent and take legal action on the violators.

Its good, the expenditure will go to other poor people domestically, better than buying overpriced foreign goods. Those who have money should spend and do extravaganza and others should think about finances and do simply wedding. Don't think in black & white

I get your point, but it is their money to spend as they see fit. Consider this, should I be jealous of someone who can afford to purchase their own jet, while I fly economy? Absolutely not. If this wedding is setting wrong expectations, then it is for the people to understand the differences between wants, needs, circumstances and learn some self control.
Also, think of all the people who were employed to run this wedding, they earned money, wealth was distributed.

This wedding is no different than royal family weddings around the world.
