  • From the Auckland floods to Cyclone Gabrielle, Aotearoa has been hit hard by extreme weather events this year. Subscribe to Re: bit.ly/subscribe-re
While the severity and intensity of the weather and the damage it brought was a shock, there were some who saw the signs that it was coming.
Rereata Makiha is a renowned Māori astrology and environmental expert who is now dedicated to protecting and promoting traditional te ao Māori practices and traditions.
Mahika works with Dallas King in the Hokianga to teach rangatahi about how to understand the environment and read the signs about what could be coming.
In this episode of Ohinga, they share the practices of their tīpuna, what the changes in flora and fauna can tell them about the coming season and what people can do after disaster strikes.
This is part of our reo Māori series, Ohinga, created by Mahi Tahi Media, with funding from Te Māngai Pāho. Stay tuned for a new episode every week.

Re: news, I know you deleted my last comment which criticised the major mistake you made in this video. Clearly you'll rather twist the facts to suit your agenda. I'll state it again & I'll keep on with it as long as you insist: Many cultures around the world like the ancient Greeks discovered things which were scientific, but their beliefs overall were not science. This statement also applies to Maori traditional beliefs. Not sorry.
