  • G'day Fisho's, This week I spend a couple of afternoons/evenings chasing big tailor from the beach. The first trip starts well but the fishing slows right down, Luckily on the second trip the tailor are running hot! Not better way to spend a few hours then staring into the surf with an Alvey in hand!

Noticed that both evenings you started fishing before dark. I think especially for new fishos it is a good tip to start before you lose light for some reason you know where to cast and how the waves and currents are working and after the light is gone it takes the guesswork out of it. I like the fact your old man goes with you too, just special.

Thanks for another great video Sammy. Certainly whets the appetite for some beach fishing- warm turning cool sea, cool but light westerlies blowing, an incoming tide and chucking pillies out to the sandbank! One of the great life experiences you can't miss out on! The fish are just the icing on the cake.

Love the beach and the serenity of fishing after dark, spent so many nights around Pottsville and Hastings point in late 80s fishing for Tailor, its all so good except for the eating quality , I rate Tailor as cat food sadly, and I don't like smoked fish so all mine get to live for another day.

My father passed away 20 years this September I have all the fibreglass Jarvis Walker rods and Alvey reels I was taught to fish with as a child growing up in rural Victoria, I was the only child in a family of 4 kids that was mad keen on fishing and spent a lot of time on the local waters. Fishing with your father brings back so many great memories make the most of time you both have.

Great Video! Yep everyone has an old Alvey story!! Great story about those 2 reels.. Nice Dart! some awesome taylor... Ive only caught low 40cm... best I did was fishing with my father when he was alive ... he'd never seen a ganged hook... he couldnt believe I was going to use a whole pilcahrd as bait... neither of us had ever caught a taylor... as soon as I hooked the first taylor ... he said "change my hooks son... ill try those gang things... we caught about 10 and a nice flatty... of north burleigh 20 years ago..

Very fond memories of catching taylor when I was a teenager off the bridge over Lake Illawarra (south of Wollongong). Using white-bait my brother and I caught 35 taylor in a session of about an hour and a half. My mother even pitched in with a fish or 2. I remember it clearly because one of them bit my finger as I was taking it off the line for her. None of them the equal of your beast but they were sweet eating.

Used to love my tailor fishing. We used to use alveys with braid and a running star sinker setup. We used the fly fishing finger gloves with a small patch of leather sewn on. Improved hook ups immensely you could feel them chewing on the cut baits. Casts a lot longer too. Give it a go you won't be disappointed.

Hey Sammy. What's the benefit of using the alvey reels Surf fishing? Say over jusr a surf rod and egg beater. Cheers

Max Alveyss are bomb proof. Sand does not worry them or salt water . Just rinse them off all good.. great to cast unweighted baits or sinker rigs. Can maintain line tautness with a little wind forward or backward. Some have a drag new ones probably all do. Can carry vast amount of line . Doesn't matter if it gets a bit low will still casts as well as a full spool. Downside: puts a lot of twist in line and don't think they're much good with braid. Having at least two ,three better, swivels will help alleviate twist. Not the best for spinning lures can be used if your good though. Love alleys for rock n beach. Used to use them cliff fishing in Sydney lifting big salmon 30-50 metres up cliffs Would strip an egg eaters gears but alvey handled it with ease buggers the operator though lol

I've got a coupler them be. Over 40 years old plus. Just changed the line and they good to go. In fact due to covid 19 I'm redoing the runners on the beach rod I bought 45 years ago a Kincumber by Jarvis Walker. Was pretty flash back in the day. A slow an tedious process with home made gear but have done a few on than old overhead rod so hopefully all will look good when finished. And coincidentally it is an Aussie invention to ..original ones were hand turned on lathes I believe. Typically tough and super simple design just like the victa mower or hills hoist. You do need a low mount rod to run them on others would be very difficult holding them up..if you ever get a chance get one for those tough beach fishing expeditions or rock fishing especially with booby corks.

@@jefflouis7090 I am in Victoria and use an Alvey for beach bait fishing which is very unusual down here; I have had a number of people ask questions about the reel because they have never seen one before. Alveys are great for bait fishing not very good for casting metal lures because of the slow retrieve rate and line twist. As you say line twist is a problem because on a 650 size Alvey it puts a twist in the line about ever 18 inches. Down here we use a 3-5 ounce star or grapple sinkers so the even though I use a number of swivels line twist is a problem. Once I start noticing a significant amount of line twist I use a home made spin doctor on it. There is a commercial product called a spin doctor that can take line twist out however it is designed for spin reels so spins the line in the wrong directions for Alvey reels. I made one from a sinker that just spins in the opposite direction; here is a video of the commercial version. ua-cam.com/video/xPSZMsAmdtM/v-deo.html

Iforgot to tell you that one fellow was a fresh water fisherman that was used to catching large mouth bass and would put his thumb in their mouth to land them. Well he did that with the first 15 pound blue fish he caught. BIG MISTAKE. he almost lost his thumb.

I come from the northern rivers, and I will tell you, mate. Why not. If the beach is covered in brizzos, you might as well be there too.
Big tailor in winter, choppers in the summer. A small swell for off the beach. Look for a gutter that you can cast to the spit, but that is not too shallow. Find one without too much sweep.
No good going if the wind has been northerly, and there are cornflakes or weed in the water. You will only catch stingrays and shovel nose sharks.
Dusk and after dark on freezing nights in a westerly for massive ones. Remember big fish like big food.
I hope you enjoy yourself fishing, and catch a good one.

Hey Sammy, what was the reason you changed from a running star sinker to a restricted ball sink. Was it just conditions or casting distance. Awesome video love tailor time.

R Fogg Just the conditions mate. Sweep bad on the first night and there was almost non the second. The ball sinker you can cast further so always drop back to that where possible 👍🍻🍻
