90+ on an old Thinkpad T420 just sitting on the desktop and yes that was with a cleaning of fans/heatsinks and thermalpaste being reapplied to the system. CPU was a i5 2520m and gpu was the Nvidia NVS 4200M
@@Montisaquadeis That's the same cpu as my dad's laptop. It's running super hot now too. That sucks that even after all those steps it's still overheating.
Honey still hasn't found me even 1 valid code when shopping online. All it does is annoy me with slowing down shopping while it goes through a ton of invalid codes.
I think it works mostly for US based retailers and I think my friend mentioned he had some luck on aliexpress and gearbest when buying some random stuff
Just completed this exact same mod to my 12-Inch MacBook (Early 2016) with amazing success. Idle temps down from 65c to 42c, stress testing 73c+ down to stable 59c. Used 0.5mm GELID Solutions GP Extreme Thermal Pad cut to a square to fit over the unbelievably tiny cpu heatsink, and I removed an equally sized square from the black thermal insulating tape from the back plate, to provide improved thermal conductivity. Fits together like a glove! Thanks Linus!
Curious how this affects battery temperatures during extended workloads. The idea is that the batteries shouldn't be getting too hot either as it reduces their capacity and lifespan (a common issue with thin gaming laptops). I personally am not sure I would sacrifice battery longevity for increased performance.
Just do the long task this week and the m1 air with pad mod, get battery reach 48C and stop charging Fan the bottom and then it charge again when temp going down With active fan it will be OK for long task, without fan it still OK for short burst
@@frankwong9486 would it be better if you (might) use the less efficient thermal pad mod (the cheapest one)? Or just simply not applying any thermal pad mods and using an external laptop fan cooler instead?
I think there are many things that they did not take into account, such as dissipating the heat through the chassis, causing other components that are sensitive to heat to heat up, such as the battery.
I'm not sure if just subtracting the room temperature and adding 35°C will really be exact for this. I could imagine that the heat think cools less under warmer temperatures because the temperature difference is lower which results in worse heatflow.
Some of us never take their laptop of the desk, sometimes even cooling pad, so this would be a way for them. Also, pads have their own thermal ratings, some are 8x more conductive than others, so configuration and fine-tuning for your use case is possible.
If you use your MBA at 100% CPU for hours at a time daily and keeping the bottom insulated, maybe? But After just 20-30 minutes or so the batteries are still well within the standard operating temps.
Damnit Linus, Its my day off. I dont want to hear about heat chambers and IEC standards (I work for a company that tests electronics, cars, using these standards)
hmm, from an Engineering POV, I would be worried about the bottom plate warping due to the poorly distributed heating of the plate. I would also be worried about the hot plate further heating up the batteries and thus hurting their longevity. If these things don't happen, then its a good mod imo. You could also install some insulating foam or other thin insulator between the bottom plate and the batteries (if there is space of course) if you're worried about your batteries heating up.
But having your batteries impacted would imply doing heavy workloads all the time, which I think most people buying the Air won't. It's just a way to have better performance when you need it, so in normal use there shouldn't be a huge difference in temperature.
I wonder what a mod like this will do to the longevity of the device. Won’t increasing the temperature of the entire chassis cause damage over time to other temperature sensitive components in the MacBook, like the battery and even the display? This seems like a good solution if you plan on only using your laptop on a desk with a cooling pad and cool ambient airflow in the room, but come on… it’s a mobile device for a reason.
You'd be fine in most cases, as general use and browsing wont raise your temps much. Either way, the much lower TDP of the M1 vs the Intel Airs also come into play. Intel Macs tented to run much warmer over their years, and their batteries were fine long-term. Unless you're pegging your CPU all day long, this mod would be fine, and even then...
I had a "MacBook Pro (Late 2006)" 17inch burn my thigh falling asleep watching a [downloaded locally] movie. I got it for design school (3 years on quarters) and by the time i finished the program a notable amount of my [class] had to of already replace the battery due to swelling including mine.
It could be an ultimate MacBook customization with liquid metal thermal compund, thermal pads and one of those laptop cooling pads just to see how good it can get
I think apple should bring back the 2011 macbook Pro form factor as a "desktop replacement" with updated ports with new components on the inside, It wouldn't be a bad place to really scale the M1 or use intel offerings with a discreet GPU. I know the 2011 Macbook pros were known for overheating but having looked inside one before, even though the fin stacks were thick, they weren't very long, which could easily be improved. Plus the newer chips scale greatly with a little extra headroom
What if one used verticle stripes of thermal padding so that half the heat would be expelled through airflow out the back slit? Then some heat would go into the case, and the rest of the heat would be expelled as Apple engineers intended. Would that both increase performance and retain comfort?
It appears he has something in between his bottom teeth and gum. I could tell by his mouth movement. I watch peoples mouths when they talk as it helps me understand them. This is the first video I have noticed this.
@@keptkozy There's a few more countries in North America than just Canada, Mexico, and the United States. And that's before you consider that there's a whole other America just south of Panama. But yeah, if someone says "America" as a country, it's the United States.
Unintentionally did the same mod in my old macbook replacing the ssd with an Intel m.2 1tb drive... The slightly thicker m.2 drive touches the aluminum back panel... And that 'heat sink' sure do get hot!!
So if all the chips and memory are soldered this means that if any component gets damaged whole Logic board has to be replaced or we can unsolder the required chip and solder a new one??
Potentially, all you would have to do is add a dbrand skin and then you are not contacting the aluminum case directly. Would that increase limit to 70C/75C (TME/ITE)? You could even add a thin later of insulation under the hotspots between the case and the dbrand skin, since the case is basically being used as a heatsink.
Did you wonder what will happen to the batteries if the processor heats the back cover and transfers that heat to the lithium batteries? Did you measure the battery temperature during the tests?
Did anyone try to remove the black sticker from the heatsink and black sticker from the back cover along with this mod? Wondering if it would make a difference.
I think you can find thinner thermal pads and stick them all of bottom may lower some temperatures ...also apple may use liquid metal thermal solution for faster heat dissipation
You power to restate the same thing 3 different ways (even though you are saying the same thing) is amazing. How long would youtube videos be if not monetized?

To be fair, Linus is too young (and Canadian) to remember that "the Australian sun is hot enough to fry an egg [on a can of housepaint]". Aussie CPU == 4-burner BBQ; get some pork with Apple sauce on your fork, boys!
There is a reason why engineers generally use 55°C as the ambient temperature for validation. It isn't that uncommon to reach 45°C in the shade summer and that's in the cooler southern states. And you have to consider the air being heated by the device itself, direct sunlight etc.
@@ecarter2747 to be fair, show me a house or a building that wouldn't have AC on 24/7 in Australia. Not taking your laptop outside to be microwaved by the sun is just common sense :P
@@SuperFlawless2010 Not everyone can afford that; the power/water used for air-conditioning (even for just a single room, let alone an entire house) is expensive, especially in rural areas; AC is something many of us try to use as little as possible. Not all of us live in the suburbs. :P
Well that 2008 laptop didn't come with that bottom cover heatsink mod, but even so, CPUs were far less efficient back then, but if it's really 100°C on the case, it's pretty obvious that the dust should be cleaned out, the thermal paste reapplied, and voilà!
@@Poire33 I have done that, replaced the fan and in fact the whole copper thing, but it just bad, it’s a dell studio 1537, they were notorious for heating back then also

I think there are many things that they did not take into account, such as dissipating the heat through the chassis, causing other components that are sensitive to heat to heat up, such as the battery.

LTT now stands for Linus Thermodynamics Tips
It's not even right thermodynamics, unluckily unforced convection is a bitch and does not behave as linearly as I would like, or they suggested.

Damnit Linus, Its my day off. I dont want to hear about heat chambers and IEC standards (I work for a company that tests electronics, cars, using these standards)
Add laptop desk fan extension problem solved
hmm, from an Engineering POV, I would be worried about the bottom plate warping due to the poorly distributed heating of the plate.
Updating my M1 Air and then IMMEDIATELY doing this mod.
It’s been so long since I didn’t have to use proxies! So excited! 😭
When a 15 minute render is an "extended workload"...
How thin thermal pad should be ? 2.0 mm ?
That expensive RED record button must not be working.
What thickness thermal pads?
0.5/1/1.5/2/2.5/3/4/5 mm?
Use some fujipoly or thick graphite pads.
I'd love to see a follow-up in a future video with this being done to the M2 Air
It has already been done by MaxTech’s UA-cam channel.
How about add a extra transparent case cover which could insulated from radiation heat by aluminium case ?
It could be an ultimate MacBook customization with liquid metal thermal compund, thermal pads and one of those laptop cooling pads just to see how good it can get
Day 11 of asking Learn Linux with Anthony series 😅
Wouldn’t that damage the batteries, or other internal components?
"And By now..."
Say whatever you wanted to, I am going 20 seconds ahead.
Any link to the thermal pads you used? Didn’t see them in the description.
Can you please provide a link to the thermal pads you used for this project?!

You could even add a thin later of insulation under the hotspots between the case and the dbrand skin, since the case is basically being used as a heatsink.

used that for alienware 17 r3 few years ago (metal bottom as well) gave nice boost to clocks
Did you wonder what will happen to the batteries if the processor heats the back cover and transfers that heat to the lithium batteries?
Did you measure the battery temperature during the tests?
Apparently, nobody has - especially people who designed heatsink adjacent to battery...I'd rather stay with Thermal Pad on SoC alone.
Did anyone try to remove the black sticker from the heatsink and black sticker from the back cover along with this mod? Wondering if it would make a difference.
How thick is the thermal pad used for the mod?
I think you can find thinner thermal pads and stick them all of bottom may lower some temperatures ...also apple may use liquid metal thermal solution for faster heat dissipation

'35 degrees is an unreasonable ambient temperature'
**cries in Australian**
