I am so glad I found your channel! My wife and I have been watching Sumo for years thanks to Jason's Sumo channel, Kintamayama, SumoNatto, and Chris Sumo. What a great video. You really did him justice and talked about the controversy which such sensitivity. I like that you didn't focus on his downfall but had a good balance between why fans love him and the impact of what happened to him.
I started watching sumo when Harumafuji first got promoted to Yokozuna. He was one of the few that rivaled Hakuho, there really isn't anyone right now that has that same aura around them that Harumafuji did. It's unfortunate how his career ended; there is a lot of sumo hierarchical culture that needs to be addressed. Hazing should never be part of any sport, and the sumo association is aware and seems to sweep it under the rug 99% of the time. Their adherence to tradition puts the health of their rikishi at risk often.
I'm out of good words about Harumafuji. He is the GOAT in my heart. He either takes everything or loses it all. I'm so grateful that I actually met him in person and took photo together. He is not a violent person he was a real man with kind heart.

Thank you so much for this video. Beautifully done, for an incredible rikishi. He was my first sumo “love” (when I discovered sumo in 2008, he was still Ama then), and always will be. I was lucky enough to see him live many times, as an Ozeki and a yokozuna, and even have met him once at the morning training in Nagoya. I got a beautiful autograph that day and it’s probably one of my most valued possessions (in my heart). I cried my heart out at his retirement ceremony. I still love and watch sumo but somehow it will never be the same without Harumafuji. I’m waiting for the next rikishi to make my heart beat but haven’t found him yet. And probably never will on the same level.

Great video and insight. As someone who started their sumo journey during the Nov. 2017 basho I do regret missing Harumafuji and Asashoryu. Shout out Jason the man who enabled me to become a sumo junkie. Keep up the great work. More sumo content is good content
Such good content, really up there with some of the best Sumo-stuff on youtube! I'm a newbie with Sumo as well and videos such like these really help on learning some of the history of Sumo, great stuff!
I sartef watching sumo this year, and i feel the very same way. It almost feels like carching the glimpses of the last great moments of sumo fading away. But hopefully future rikishis bring that greatness of old to us new sumo fans.
Being new to sumo having only watched the last two basho, but i feel like it is a very interesting time in sumo, everything seems in place for a new Yokozuna, and the idea of getting in just in time to watch the Ozeki battling it out for Yokozuna as the torch is pasted to the next gen of Rikishi has only increased my enjoyment of sumo
Haramafuji and Chiyonofuji will always be my two favorite wrestlers. You did a masterful job with this video. I love all your videos because they really add understanding and insight on why people find sumo so fascinating and unique among the world's sports. As bad as Haramafuji's fall, he has had a redemptive journey since.
One thing about Terunofuji though: He has badly busted knees and I think that his time as an active rikishi may be somewhat short. I hope he succeeds with his Yokozuna bid in July, making him a rikishi who fell from Ozeki to 4th division due to injury and back to Yokozuna - probably the only one to ever do that? (I mean, Ozeki - Sandanme - Ozeki is epic on its own of course)
What a great video! And you even got Jason to talk about Harumafuji! I love this channel and your approach to Grand Sumo although I could do without the Bach/Chopin/Satie combo
Westerner here . I love all forms a martial competition. I've been watching sumo for ages without really having much of an idea of what happens behind the scenes. I had no idea how long seasons are , what the tournament formats are , what the significance of certain things are . I'm simply here for the Art it's self. I'd like to thank you for taking the time to explain to people like me the finer points of the sport . Have my like , my sub and my best wishes.
He was so much fun to watch, you could feel the respect and rivalry between Hakuho and him. It's a shame Yokuzunae can't break a bottle or two on someone's head...
Love your shows. I love sumo too. Yokozuna pull out of a tournament when they are injured because they don't suffer any negative consequences. Every tournament you see Rikishi play injured in a desperate attempt to get kachikoshi when they would be much better off withdrawing.
I started watching grand sumo about 5 years ago...love the sport, and while i had several wrestlers who i liked, aside from his speedy technical sumo there was just something about the way Harmafuji carried himself that made him my favorite. I'd always admired how when he would occasionally be beaten. instead of looking angry or disappointed, he could manage a wry smile. Couldn't believe it when news of the bar incident broke, and think they were a little harsh in their treatment of him.Thank you for the excellent (albeit sad) documentary
I only recently got into sumo through this channel though I have been a fan of mma and other martial arts for a while now. I love the depth and story that sumo has in and out of the dohyo. I don't usually comment but this video made me tear up because of how much I sympathize with Harumafuji. As someone who only tries to be a good person but has had really bad shit happen to me which led me to be regretfully able to do bad shit to others. Like what the conclusion of the video said, is it really possible for someone to not do any harm when they are continuously experiencing pain or mistreatment from the closest people around them. I cannot say how Harumafuji must have felt after the incidents mentioned but it is not hard to image the guilt and shame one may feel from such an event even though the accusations may not necessarily be true or accurate. I relate heavily to these feelings and it seems the only logical thing to do is to try to be better, which is what Harumafuji seems to be doing after his retirement.
just wondering if people here would be interested in going to see live sumo in Japan when Japan's travel restrictions are lifted? I saw live sumo twice (once in Tokyo and once in Fukuoka) and even dipped in the hot spring with a group of sumo wrestlers 😳, definitely an experience you will never forget!! 😆
Dear host, Where can I follow your other social pages such as IG or Twitter. I really love your unbiased rational views on current sumo's situations. Much love and respect from Mongolia!
This was beautiful. Thank you for making this video. You clearly care deeply for the subject and took much time and effort to tell it the way you have. I am a new fan of sumo, and I will be a fan for the rest of my life. I appreciate you giving more insight into the world I now love.
Most excellent reporting. Sumo is a complex system with many injustices in some case, and not enough justice in others. A wonderful look at this dichotomy.
Before today I could’ve cared less about sumo and continue thinking it was overweight men, wrestling in diapers. Til i stumbled upon this absolute gem of amazing story telling, deep analysis of the sacred library of sumo techniques, and the mechanics of win conditions. The illustration and delivery of this video blew me away. It had my full attention and curiosity from the start. And this is whats led me to this sumo rabbit hole. You know a channel is great when you sort by popular. Please continue sharing your talent. Sincerely, another new fan of sumo.
Oh wow. Thank you so much! Your words are so eloquent and I'm very flattered. This video is one of my early videos and I hope you can see the progress on my channel as I try very hard to put as much passion as sumo wrestlers put into the sport! Welcome to the great world of sumo. I hope we see you in the next grand tournament. Hakkeyoi!
I love Harumafuji, he was a perfect skill and speed counterpoint to Hakuho... The most legit Yokozuna beside the goat... I agree with jason in your video... I think the allegations were corrupt and sumo is drastically reduced without him
This video just popped up for me. Harumafuji was my favorite rikishi and still is. I started watching sumo when he was starting his run at yokozuna. I still remember all of the nay sayers. I would always point out his record against Hakuho. If you can consistently beat the GoaT, you are a worthy yokozuna. (9 titles isn't bad either 😉) Great video!
Thank you, thank you. Hey, I'm that old 65-year-old guy who bugs you after each of your wonderful videos. Why do I do that? Because I still own every copy of Sumo World magazine ever printed. Please keep making your great videos and exploring this sport! I think you have already learned that it's not always pretty! But it is always human, with all our flaws.

I’m also a rather new sumo fan and watching this got me sentimental. How did I miss all this excitement 😭😭 btw loved what you’re doing in your channel.. looking forward for more!
Yeah, I feel the same. If only I’d found Sumo a few years earlier. I would’ve really enjoyed to see Asashoryu.
Very well written, edited and executed.
Very well done.
i used to watch sumo through jason's coverage. thank you for including him 🥰
Great video and insight. As someone who started their sumo journey during the Nov. 2017 basho I do regret missing Harumafuji and Asashoryu. Shout out Jason the man who enabled me to become a sumo junkie. Keep up the great work. More sumo content is good content
I love your videos!
So much work has been put in here. Please don't stop💜
Such good content, really up there with some of the best Sumo-stuff on youtube! I'm a newbie with Sumo as well and videos such like these really help on learning some of the history of Sumo, great stuff!
Amazing video. Thank you. As a new fan of sumo I too look forward to seeing a Yokozuna in his prime.
I sartef watching sumo this year, and i feel the very same way. It almost feels like carching the glimpses of the last great moments of sumo fading away. But hopefully future rikishis bring that greatness of old to us new sumo fans.
Love your stuff! This is an amazing documentary on a wrestler I didn't know much about.
Concerning your writing and editing, you truly outdid yourself. Absolutely loved everything about this video. Thank you so much!
He did! Now he’s doing very well in November (14-0). I know it’s an older comment, but I still wanted to say how he’s doing in November
@@abiezerEscude I know thank you! I've been watching on NattoSumo, and now he's even 15-0 :-)
@@Widestone001 yeah! It was amazing! I’m watching the 15 bouts of Teru on Don Don’s channel! And Natto Sumo was incredible as well!
Well done sumostew really well put together and insightful 👏👍
Keep them coming
He was so much fun to watch, you could feel the respect and rivalry between Hakuho and him. It's a shame Yokuzunae can't break a bottle or two on someone's head...
It's a shame.... hahaha
Just absolutely beautiful.... I watched this soo many times haha. Keep it up girly!
Awesome channel. This opened my world to Sumo and now I'm a fan. Much love from Texas.
Beautifully written. Thank you very much!
I'm new to sumo and you absolutelyade me a fan of this sport. I look forward to learning more and looking for the next great talent to come through
Circus it was. If they consider Harumafuji not dignified, I don't know who do they consider dignified.
Outstanding Documentary Sumostew! Thank You!
Amazing work! Thank you for this video and can't wait to see more!!
Well written piece. Objective and thoughtful questions that reflect respect for the subject matter.
Dear host, Where can I follow your other social pages such as IG or Twitter. I really love your unbiased rational views on current sumo's situations. Much love and respect from Mongolia!
Great question! I am not on other social media yet. But I will make one soon. Thank you for your kind words I really appreciate it
Very nice video, thank you. And seein some Jason commentary was great. He’s the reason I got into Sumo
Like you I am relatively knew to the sport - 2018. Loved this! Well done!
This was beautiful. Thank you for making this video. You clearly care deeply for the subject and took much time and effort to tell it the way you have. I am a new fan of sumo, and I will be a fan for the rest of my life. I appreciate you giving more insight into the world I now love.
Harumafuji was always my favorite. He would charge like an animal. Sorry I did not get to witness more of his sumo.
Well written, balanced narrative. Thanks for putting together the clips as well!
Hakkeyoi!
Your videos are awesome. Please keep making them!
What a great video Sumostew!!!! I really miss Harumafuji 😢
I am excited to have you as another sumo content creator to watch. Another good video!
Great Job! iI love haramafuji! my favorite rishiki.
Please do not stop making content. You’re fantastic
I love Harumafuji, he was a perfect skill and speed counterpoint to Hakuho... The most legit Yokozuna beside the goat... I agree with jason in your video... I think the allegations were corrupt and sumo is drastically reduced without him
Thank you for these vids! Really interesting and accessible even for Sumo newbies.
(9 titles isn't bad either 😉) Great video!
i had to watch two times, cause of the top notch quality of content, oh wow!
thanks
domo arigato
Wonderful. Thank you for this insightful video.
Absolutely beautifully done.
Loved this.he was one of my favourites
I've been enjoying your Sumo content! Keep up the good work!
He was my favorite rikishi to watch.
Awesome video, subscribed!
Excellent !! Looking fwd to more of these.
Excellent review, thank you very much
you make the best sumo vids anywhere!
Outstanding video! I really enjoyed it.
April, 2023 here.
Where are you Ter??? We miss you!
The sumo community needs you. Please come back.😢
Thank you, thank you.
I hope this sport can stay strong and be even more popular!
Wonderful production!
