Hi Chris! Happy Birthday! I hit my 60th in 2022. Time really flies at this age. So glad you're enjoying the ink vent and not getting stressed over it. I've watched some others on UA-cam with the ink vent and I just like your layout best. Those shimmer inks are beautiful but what a pain. I really understand that. I was all geared up in November with a few shimmer inks but when December came around, my love for shimmer inks was dying down. I only loaded up two pens with shimmer. Both were from Ferris Wheel Press and I've used both before. Best Wishes is a light brown/beige with a silver shimmer and it's been very well behaved. No drying up and good flow. The other one called Cloak and Forest is a big headache. I put in in a pen and it wouldn't flow so changed it to a new one. Still no flow. Finally I moved it to a pen I've had the ink in before and it started working but it keeps stopping up with the shimmer. It seems like the ink has changed since I last used it or when I used it in the past, maybe I never shook the bottle. Then my really exciting news - I got myself a Pilot Elite 95! Got it on Alliexpress for only $116 Cdn. What a bargain. I got the burgundy one with a med nib and it writes like a dream. Got it inked up with Diamine Writers Blood. Another winner in my pens is a super cheap Baoer white pen 3035. I love how the pen looks AND writes and it was only $4.50.

Chris, this is the first year I wish I had done the Inkvent. The colors seem especially glorious this year. Right now I'm using the Opus 88 I purchased on fountain pen day with my Diamine Pick Me Up. Also, I owe you a letter!

I‘ve been pretty down. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks in November and on Thanksgiving I lost my 13 year old Lab Birdy. It’s been rough. Have a great birthday tomorrow!
Oh I'm so very sorry to hear about your loss of your fur baby. Labs are the most friendly, loving dogs I've even known - - and in my home our cats are family and very much our babies so the heartbreak of loss is so familiar. Please take good care of yourself and I am wishing you comfort and peace as you deal with the grief.
Hi Chris, Happy Birthday 🎉. Always love your videos. A jacaranda tree has beautiful purple flowers the same colour as the ink. They are in flower here in Australia at the moment and they grow quite tall. I wish I got this years inkvent. I see so many colours I like.

I’m not up to date with my inkvent but that’s ok, we’ve had a bit of a snow storm 12” in 2 days and had problems with getting the rims for my winter tires, so between shoveling, the lack of electricity due to the storm getting my car in good shape, well i got a bad cold,not covid but still spent the weekend in bed! This evening I’m getting over the worst of it. I just don’t want to rush through the inks, i want to take my time and enjoy the process. I understand what you meant! Happy birthday 🥳 🎂 For the 12th ! I remember how it was in Vermont having to get snow tires on and start worrying about plowing, boots, jackets and gloves etc all on top of the ordinary stuff that has to be done still. :) Take good care! Oh yes, I'm very careful around ladders. When in doubt I just don't try it. So far I've found some solutions where I felt comfortable and most everything was within reach with just my safety ladder that has a nice handle. :)
Happy Birthday just a little early Chris. My Inkvent activity as always involves just watching four peoples fun opening the little bottles. So far yours is the best method. I have stayed away from buying one because of all of the shimmer inks. I use fine and extra fine nibs so I would have no use for those inks.
Hi @Goldilockszone123 this is a good point I think about choice of nib size being such a factor for inks .... so far there have only been a few I'd t hink would work in a fine nib very well ... unless it was a flowy writer like a Pelikan but probably I would not put shimmer ink in my one Pelikan for fear of possible cleaning troubles.
Nearly an hour video, this was a real Xmas treat! Thank you Chris. There are so many lovely inks this time around, I just haven’t had time enough to spend with them. My favourites from day 1-10 are Fortunes Gold (one of the prettiest yellow/golds I’ve seen), and Sweet Dreams (never can resist a lovely pink). I really wanted to like Bucks Fizz but it wrote a bit too faint and dry for my taste, maybe I’ll go back and try with a stub nib. My Jinhao’s have been the workhorses this inkvent. Thanks for the Ink Journal Challenge tip, looks like a lot of fun, and best wishes with your renovations. 🙏🙂
I struggled hard with day one's ink. I'm writing long form fiction daily and that is just not the ink for the job. I eventually found it looks a lot better on cream-colored paper, but that's one ink I'm writing off as a good to have for color variety in my collection but don't try to love it ink. On the upside, that's probably going to be my least liked ink this year, and we got it out of the way quickly. Masquerade really impressed me. It was like writing with a nice bronze makeup color, and to me it looks great with or without full shimmer.

It's definitely darker than any other black I've used; I want a bottle, if I can ever find one for sale. It's probably worth the inflated price to me.

Looks like Diamine is running out of holiday themed names for inks. 😁 Some of these first inks are more for art than writing, IMO. (Imagine the first one used to illuminate the first letter of a paragraph, like a medieval manuscript, for instance.😁) For the most part, I have limited use for shimmer. I like it, but when I use a shimmer ink in correspondence, absolutely no one notices, and they are more expensive, so, why make the effort? (Still using them for certain holiday stuff.😁 Like I said, I like them.) Yes, one should be honest with themselves about an ink. Some that even retailers gush about using are really not good for writing, but would work well for art use. Buck's Fizz: had to look it up. Basically a different name for a mimosa. Half sparkling wine, usually champagne, and half orange juice. So, a nice name for the color. Hi Paul -- I am getting along very good this year with Diamine Spiced Apple (a red shimmer ink from last year's Inkvent) for my cards when I remember. LOL I just refilled my Lamy Safari with it yesterday and refilling is always a sign that I'm loving an ink. Happy Holiday's to you as well and I hope you're recovering and feeling better!!!!
Chameleon is a specialty shimmer that changes color based on the angle between the light, the page, and your eyes (or the camera lens). Like if you sit with a ceiling light on and you have the page at normal table height between you and the light, and then raise up the page so that it's almost directly between you and the light, you should be able to see the change. Or you can use a bright flashlight and move it around slowly so that it's shining on the swatch from different places. You want big changes in direction-- just rocking a paper back and forth (like a hologram) usually isn't enough. Here's the shimmer color changes so far: Fortunes Gold- gold to green Nightfall- green to blue Bucks Fizz- gold to silver(blue?) Moon Beam- blue to pink/purple So far Masquerade and Sweet Dreams are the only ones I don't really care for. And I've actually already put Cashmere Rose in a pen, but didn't manage to get much in (not by choice), so that ran out quickly. Haven't put any others in a pen yet, but Jacaranda is right up there and going in soon after I finish up a specific pen I'm using. And speaking of Jacaranda-- I'm pronouncing it with the spanish 'j' sound, mostly because I really only know it from "What Else Can I Do?" from Encanto. lol 🎶A hurricane of jacarandas 🎶 Last weekend I wrote a song's lyrics in my journal, and I was so excited because I had Solar Storm from last year's inkvent in a pen and I thought that was perfect since the music video for the song had so much celestial imagery. Then I opened Nightfall and that would have been even better. And then later on we got Moon Beam, which would have been EVEN BETTER. Aaaah! lol (The music video uses the moon to symbolically represent the person being sung to/about.) Moon Beam does look a little greenish when wet, but to me it looks straight charcoal grey once dried. I ended up paining some colorverse hubble resist cards with the inks we've gotten so far to stick into cards and letters that I'm sending, as an extra bonus of ink beyond just what I'm writing with.
Hi @FlybyStardancer -- oh wow I will have to experiment with holding the page and raising it ... this is fascinating ... thank you for going into so much detail. The shimmer is so beautiful in the swatches and splats ... I just wish I could get shimmer in every word. LOL
East o Eden is a great classic.. I also like Thomas Hardy very much, but some of his stuff is very tragic (Tess of the d'Ubervilles, Jude the Obscure.) Far from the Madning Crowd is earlier and not as sad.

Happy birthday, Chris!! Thanks for the Inkvent update. I am using Vinta Pagtangi ink for December/ Christmas cards, and the color is beautiful. It’s in a Pilot Metropolitan and the agitator inside the converter moves the ink and glitter well for evenly spread color and glitter. I just hate It when the glitters fall off and end up on my writing desk! 😂
Happy Birthday Chris! I agree on the Fortunes Gold ink, it would be a great art ink but probably not the best for writing. It might grow on you though. I just put a Noodlers Ahab with a Goulet M nib back into rotation. It was one of my very first pens and I still love it! Im also doing more journaling now that warmer weather activities have slowed down.
Hi @lju5001 thank you for the birthday wishes! Oh my gosh I have to try a M Goulet on my Ahab ... I'm getting too heavy an ink flow with the regular Noodler's Flex and even their steel regular nib ... but I super love the Ahab pen bodies. I'm glad you mentioned this. :)
I did not like 6 inks in this.. so I put what I did not like in one bottle and in made a shimmering brown. I did the same thing as you. Maybe ? and absolutely not, especially the Fortunes Gold, No way. I only write and don't do crafts, so that color was not going to work at all.
I'm beginning to really not get as excited about shimmer inks ... other than the ink splats! They seem like too much work to get shimmer to actually show. But sometimes it's the ink/nib combo .... that's why I'm using all my favorite nibs since if the ink doesn't come across well in those pens I'm not likely to get far with the ink!
Truthfully, I don't think they show up in pens as much. I think more like a brush or a pen that gushes. instead maybe get your dip pen out. I see more Sheen in pens than I do Shimmering. I like the FWP inks, only because they are so pretty and have more characteristics to their inks. Don't get me wrong Diamine is a great ink. I have several. Sometimes I believe company's come to a wall and get lost at times. Oh and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! 🥳I know how you feel, I just had one!!!!@@ChrisSaenz13

Then I opened Nightfall and that would have been even better. And then later on we got Moon Beam, which would have been EVEN BETTER. Aaaah! lol (The music video uses the moon to symbolically represent the person being sung to/about.)
Moon Beam does look a little greenish when wet, but to me it looks straight charcoal grey once dried.
I ended up paining some colorverse hubble resist cards with the inks we've gotten so far to stick into cards and letters that I'm sending, as an extra bonus of ink beyond just what I'm writing with.
Hi @FlybyStardancer -- oh wow I will have to experiment with holding the page and raising it ... this is fascinating ... thank you for going into so much detail. The shimmer is so beautiful in the swatches and splats ... I just wish I could get shimmer in every word. LOL
East o Eden is a great classic.. I also like Thomas Hardy very much, but some of his stuff is very tragic (Tess of the d'Ubervilles, Jude the Obscure.) Far from the Madning Crowd is earlier and not as sad.

Hi Terri -- oh that's great -- I really enjoyed the process this year and writing in the book made it much much easier - it operates like a work book. I'm sticking with "powerful" as that is what I want to be vs "helpless".

Happy birthday, Chris!! Thanks for the Inkvent update. I am using Vinta Pagtangi ink for December/ Christmas cards, and the color is beautiful. It’s in a Pilot Metropolitan and the agitator inside the converter moves the ink and glitter well for evenly spread color and glitter. I just hate It when the glitters fall off and end up on my writing desk! 😂

Happy Birthday Chris! I agree on the Fortunes Gold ink, it would be a great art ink but probably not the best for writing. It might grow on you though. I just put a Noodlers Ahab with a Goulet M nib back into rotation. It was one of my very first pens and I still love it! Im also doing more journaling now that warmer weather activities have slowed down.
Hi @lju5001 thank you for the birthday wishes! Oh my gosh I have to try a M Goulet on my Ahab ... I'm getting too heavy an ink flow with the regular Noodler's Flex and even their steel regular nib ... but I super love the Ahab pen bodies. I'm glad you mentioned this. :)

I did not like 6 inks in this.. so I put what I did not like in one bottle and in made a shimmering brown. I did the same thing as you. Maybe ? and absolutely not, especially the Fortunes Gold, No way. I only write and don't do crafts, so that color was not going to work at all.
I'm beginning to really not get as excited about shimmer inks ... other than the ink splats! They seem like too much work to get shimmer to actually show. But sometimes it's the ink/nib combo .... that's why I'm using all my favorite nibs since if the ink doesn't come across well in those pens I'm not likely to get far with the ink!
Truthfully, I don't think they show up in pens as much. I think more like a brush or a pen that gushes. instead maybe get your dip pen out. I see more Sheen in pens than I do Shimmering. I like the FWP inks, only because they are so pretty and have more characteristics to their inks. Don't get me wrong Diamine is a great ink. I have several. Sometimes I believe company's come to a wall and get lost at times. Oh and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! 🥳I know how you feel, I just had one!!!!@@ChrisSaenz13
