why isn't your account linked to Fully Charged?
Such a humble man.
I haven't been for a few years but I have been an amateur car designer for the past few decades.
This design is probably THE best design I have ever seen since I put my pencil down.
(although the tail lights need to be reworked, two lights either end with the inner been round the outer semi round on the inside and following the outer panel contour on the outside, the rear panel needs slight alterations, embossed framing creaes/line).
I hope this mıodel get's realized, please tell Mr. Bob Laishley, thank you. : )
great points raised by Bob; using a Audi door and aperture, Maserati seat, what a great idea
No thank you
There is something so refreshing and honest about a car company on a humble budget. Good on Caterham, no shame and a lot to have pride in.
Are they worker owned?
It's not your typical car company, small volume and high end price. I agree it was nice to see the non cooperate CEO telling us about their journey.
And Bob really embodies that. What a dude.
The transparency regarding oem parts and cost is refreshing and wise I think.
@@mynewcolour Exactly! Why not harmonise and carry over parts rather than engineer the same as a low volume manufacturer.
What a beautiful car, and that color choice is incredible. It's refreshing to hear a CEO talk about the details of a single car so intimately, not marketing and buzzwords.
If only we were so lucky with other companies
wish all car manufacturers were run by automotive engineers rather than MBA's.
@@satoau1 They would go bankrupt and the MBAs would come out on top and buy them up
@@amazin7006 you'd think but the reverse always happens.
@@satoau1yeah, it's not like it was the engineers that started the companies and made them successful in the first place....
This is where EVs should be going, light and simple. If there is a 'green' claim to EVs then simplicity is essential. The Caterham looks amazing, they deserve a winner here.
Totally agree and imo that's the biggest issue with EVs right now. You see all those big bulky SUVs like the iX and for them to get a decent range, they have to have a huge battery that makes them insanely heavy. Cars like that go fully against the sustainability and "green" factor that EVs should have and at that point are no better than an ICE car.
EVs should be lighter, smaller and simple to preserve resources and not need those huge batteries. Good aerodynamic is also important, so SUVs shouldn't even be built as they have shit aero.
Exactly. The Hummer EV's battery weighs more than the entire Aptera!
Take notes Lotus
They are taking notes from lotus lol!!!
Didn't lotus make first light weight electric sprots car with batteries on roof or something?
Thank you 👍
Lotus says the ev emira replacement coming in 2025 or 26 will be within 100# of the emira weight.
Porsche says the cayman/boxter ground up ev due in mid 2025 will be within 100kg or less of the current ice 718s.
The Xiaomi sc01 ev is a 2dr 430hp awd ground up sports coupe coming later this year in china. Starting at 41k with a 2,900# curb weight and 300 miles of range albeit on the stupid cltc range test. But still mid 200s wltp or epa. Light quick and cheap. 😎
And this is just a lotus/tesla gen1 roadster do over 17 years later with less range less power and still slow charging albeit a bit cheaper. 😀
I want caterham to build it in mass, but with at least 330hp(call tesla up and ask to buy a few thousand plaid cf motors or lucid?
Ad solid or semi solid state cells to push the range to 300 or so+4 seat only. 3 changes would make this sell like crazy if the price was 65-80k.
They won’t anymore sadly.
Now they’re a Chinese badge brand after having been bought out and now introducing the Eletre.
Lotus is now another MG.
That good part of Lotus is dead now.
What a great looking car! I love the way they've sourced parts from established manufacturers. Good luck to Caterham in getting this beauty into mass production and making it profitable.
Crossing all my fingers and toes for this one.
My thoughts exactly… I'm not a car guy but it looks like there's a lot of smart thinking that's gone into this
It’s gorgeous, and you can kinda see echos of the “7” shapes inside that form.
More car makers than you'd believe do this. There are parts on a Lamborghini that come from budget cars, etc.
@@AnthonyAllenJr I hadn't thought about it but what you say certainly makes sense. I've wondered about the labor to make complex parts on certain low-production cars. I'll look at this differently from now on. Thanks for your comment!
Huge respect to Caterham for finding creative solutions to the problems associated with EV weight and the cost of manufacturing. You’ve got my notice, lefts hope the price is good too. Well done.
I wish more folks like Bob existed within the car industry. This is the kind of EV that enthusiasts can look at and be proud of.
I'm sure they exist but they're engineers. The catch is that the managers, execs (and stock holders!), and accountants have the biggest say. Engineers want stuff to work well and pay for itself. The latter group want things to produce more, more, and more profit for more, more, and more time... so they add stuff for that end under the guise of "features" and being for the customer.
@@Kimoto504 You're 100% right. Unfortunately the bean counters are often the ones who win out when it comes to building anything fun.
When you hear a bloke like Bob referencing Colin Chapman, and talking about his passion project, it makes me happy to know that the future isn't all bland fwd SUV ev's with 10sec 0-100 times. They've put their (admittedly limited) budget to spectacular use getting an EV under 1200kg let alone a low slung, 3 seat sports car. That's less weight than a modern Toyota 86 or MX5 in some specs and it's going to have bucket loads more power and torque.
Enthusiasts of EVs and actual car enthusiasts are very different. People who actually build race cars and dont have to worry about there ESG score know whats up.
@@Thesomersetgimp So you're telling me that Caterham, arguably builders of the worlds most hardcore track ready, road legal cars aren't enthusiasts? No, what you're describing are luddites. People who simply refuse to accept change no matter how good it is. True enthusiasts can still enjoy internal combustion engines AND EV's for totally different reasons.
@@shakeelali20 ESG score sunbeam, that was the important bit.
No one would buy this car an Caterham know it.
EVs MIGHT have there place as moving boxes to get people from A to B.
EV performance vehicles are a gimmick.
Ok there are a lot of luddites that are scared of change and just like engine noise.
But if you really think about it, EVs are twatty in there current form. Problem is, EV owners are too heavily invested to admit it.
I love brands like Ariel and Caterham, their vision and philosophy is pin pointedly driving focused without getting into the horsepower, or 0-60 rat race, while being relatively affordable.
I mean horsepower and 0-60 is just ridiculous now unless you're chasing world records then what's the point, but i do understand like increasing bhp 0-60 time for every generation of car for a selling point other than that no matter what car you get you get bored of it anyway
I think they didn't give enough attention to the power numbers and 0-60. Just being a slower car isn't an upside. I guess we shouldn't expect much from an EV at this weight.
@@justinkase1360 I think more power would actually make it worse, since it would negatively affect handling, especially with driving assists turned off
@@justinkase1360 4.5 seconds is plenty quick for a fun day on b roads through the mountains.
@@justinkase1360this car will not be "slow" by any stretch. Everyone gets too hyped seeing 500 HP Mustangs and 700 HP Corvettes, forgetting how HEAVY those recent models are, how useless it is on most twisty roads, and how difficult it can be to actually control that kind of power. This is right in the sweet spot in terms of power to weight ratio: enough to be quick and lively, not too much that it overwhelms the driver.
Having sat in this at the festival of speed my observations were 1. that they’d absolutely hit the size/weight/power/range sweet spot 2. that the quality of the design and build of the concept was exceptional and 3. that at 6’4” I fit more comfortably in it than any other sports car I’ve driven. I really want one!
Finally a simple, effective, beautiful two door electric and I really like Bob, very down to earth guy !
Check out the Polestar 1
Honestly the project V is what I thought lotus would have made.
Reminds me of a Lotus as well.
Here's to hoping they'll have their own version of it soon.
We'll have to see what Lotus comes up with, since their all-electric future is just around the corner. I've been driving an '05 Elise since new and I hope my next car is an electric Elise.
Lotus knows that building performance EVs is nothing more than PR and not practical.
EVs are just boxes from moving people from A to B. Lotus make performance cars, not EVs.
Hence why lotus’s EV concept is an SUV. It’s not a serious lotus, it’s just to help their ESG.
@@tomindenver1331 it won’t.
Lotus know perforce EVs are a waste of time/money.
Hence why there only concept EV is an SUV.
Says it all really doesn’t it?
The Project V is like the lovechild of Alpine 110 and an Emira - this is no bad thing! And finally manufacturers are looking at packaging to suit the tech rather than EV power to fit existing designs. Following this with great interest...
Lotus should electrify the Emira instead of axing the production at some point down the line. That thing looks like a baby Ferrari!
@@brainiacbreakdownwhich is a shame isnt? The Gen 1 roadster is still the benchmark in terms of engaging EV driving and thats thanks to Lotus being Tesla's engineering consultant in its baby steps...and now FINALLY a car that can topple the EV sports crown
Hope Caterham can produce both of these and they end up popular enough that Caterham can continue producing them. 1100kg and 700kg is exactly what I'd want to see from the future of EVs; the lightweight, small car suits the ethos of EVs perfectly. Far better than the 2300kg 600hp wallowy monsters we're increasingly seeing these days.
200 mile range and fast charging is good enough for an enthusiast runabout like this.
You're delusional if you think this car will weigh anywhere near 1100kg. LMAO.
@@MuppetsSh0wthe car that started the EV revolution : the gen 1 Tesla roadster weight as near as an S2000 but to be fair Tesla consulted Lotus to help them (which is ironic that they later go for the "fat and power" route with the Electre) but with all that said, blame Tesla for sparking the "heavy car but PR stunt numbers" dick measuring contest plaguing EV sportscars today *cough *cough Rimac...
700 kilos is like 200 kilos more than a regular 7, more than 30% more mass being carted around. You know, just to put some relativity to those numbers. Charge it fast and kill it fast, because no lithium battery likes being charged fast.
EV and lightweight, oxymoron to the day they finally realize what an ecological disaster they all are.
@@pontiacg445 nah......the automotive industryy
is an ecological problem all to itself ICEs and EVs are dead even in pollution altogether, if we keep the non car guys out of owning cars with public transportation and delivery services especially in cities and suburbs then the reduction of production will reduce emissions altogether, but idk im not American so i always touch grass with my two shoes and not some 3 ton metal horse doing it for me.
Finally someone gets it. The biggest problem with EVs is the weight. Heavy weight means you need more power, bigger tires, bigger brakes, bigger batteries, etc. this all means more weight. This also means a lot more expense replacing all these items as the y wear. And they wear much faster because of the weight.
I really hope this makes it to production.
Exactly...... They are the betamax of the car world.
Pretty sure people have understood that EVs are heavy AF LOOOONG ago. "finally, someone gets it...." Lol. Why do you think Tesla made their own 4680 cells?!
@@DescartesRenegade Tesla is a good example. They have developed a more power dense battery, this is true. But there is still a lot of uncertainty weight in their cars. They perceive that people want high horsepower cars with all wheel drive and vast amounts of luxury. And to a lot of people, this is true. But for a driving enthusiast, there is no point in having massive acceleration if the car is too heavy to stop quickly, or is sluggish to respond in corners. Lose the extra motor. Cut out most of the creature comforts. Now you reduce weight. Now you can use a smaller battery for similar performance. Now you can use smaller, lighter wheels and tires. Now you don't need so much power. Now you can use an even lighter battery. Etc.
It is the quest for the most power, for a family car to complete in a drag race with super cars, that is the biggest mistake. But it is what got electrics noticed by the public. It is just so unnecessary.
@@jaimegrant784 Tesla targeted where the auto market is, compact SUVs, compact sedans, mid size sedans, and SUVs. There is no profit in the "EV enthusiast" sector. If they wanted to, they'd do it a thousand times better and faster than this company...all with higher profit margins as well. Don't confuse lack of market interest with lack of engineering capabilities.
If car companies would stop trying to do stupid crap like automatic doors and powered everything they could cut down on weight. If they just made a simple sturdy car it wouldn't have to be 2 1/2 tons. I bet the wiring harness alone is 500lbs on a modern car!
I really hope this will turn into a production car.
Also I really love listening to Bob talk about this kind of stuff.

Watching the interaction between the Caterham CEO and the interviewer just brought to mind grandpa imparting the wisdom of the ages to grandson 😊. Great to see that despite the recent difficult headwinds, some in the UK car industry are still pushing innovative thinking in the automobile industry. Good on you Caterham!
😂 Not sure Bob would appreciate the grandfather comparison but he was delightful to talk to
Great job on the interview 👍
So great to see little Caterham not just embracing electric but pioneering development. Excellent news, thanks Jack.👍
That's such a good looking car oh my god.. 😭
My thought exactly.
It's really nice to have the CEO of a car company that knowledgeable about their cars like Bob. Bob's your uncle!
I still drive my first Caterham 7, which I built in 1996. In 2013 I wanted to build an electric 7, but that project morphed into the EVSR electric race car instead. After 9 seasons of racing various EVSR prototypes (and setting multiple records😉) I’m ready to try again building an electric 7.
If you do try again, please document it on UA-cam. I'd be interested in seeing your approach.
This is what's missing from the market right now. Would also like a more barebones version, something as cheap as it can be, with the same performance. I'll be ok without the Maserati seats :)
Yeah, all EVs are trying to push the battery capacity up and up. Even Tesla is going bigger and bigger while they made a 40kWh Model S back in the very early 2012. Give me a faster charge rate but not a huge battery I need to lug around...
My heart skipped a beat upon first viewing of the Project V. It is quite possibly the most beautiful electric car on the planet, while being actually functional.

This Caterham, which is a brand I normally don't care about, has me more excited about what happens in the near future with EVs than any other brand, concept, production vehicle, etc I've come across in, maybe, years. I hope Caterham makes it happen and they sell every vehicle they can produce.
Manufacturers have somehow conflated EV powertrains with digital everything. I love how there are no screens in this car. I hope Caterham provides inspiration for larger automakers to follow.
@WhatisaLee The lack of multiple screens and capacitive buttons everywhere went unnoticed initially. But, to your point, I love that it's the digital dash/cockpit and the modestly sized infotainment screen and that's it. Other manufactures, especially those working in the non-luxury spectrum, need to pay very close attention to what Caterham did here and copy a lot of it.
@@WhatisaLeethere are 2 screens, the digital dash and the centre infotainment one

great interview - really good back and forth engagement, learned alot from Bob because Jack drew the goodness out.
I've been a huge critic of overweight massive electric vehicles and even been a bit of a critic of novelty sporty ev's. I'm one if those people who only want a practical reasonable ev's, but this is amazing. I love every aspect of this car. I want one amazing
There is no such thing as a reasonable or practical EV, and that's the point. Its a means of control.
In 10 years you'll get into your EV and it will drive you autonomously to the police station because you social credit score was too low. That's what is really behind this push to electric cause they sure as hell aren't green or cut C02 or are good for the environment when they strip mine entire mountains for the minerals in the batteries, or drilling for petroleum used to create the plastics that the entire interiors are made with.
@@RealKlausSchwab this has nothing to do with EV vs ICE. internet connection, self driving, plastics exist in combustion cats and mining/recycling necessary for any car. But worrying about petroleum used to make plastics in an EV to justify ICE is the most funny argument I've ever heard. And yeah, EV's cut C02, its a fact, its been proven countless times. BTW Im driving a lightweight EV that has no self driving, not even a screen or bluetooth :-D its also a 24kWh battery
This company talks to me more than any other at the moment. I’ve always wanted a caterham and it would be a fun place to start, with a wish of owning an EV TOO.
THAT. IS. GORGEOUS. I love that you can see the echoes of classic Caterhams in the front grill, and the back reminds me of a DeTomaso.
I don't know if you're reading this, Caterham, but I'm quite a grumpy cynic.... and I love it. I think it gets everything right. It's what I'd like to see from Lotus but they don't make. It reminds me a bit of that Renault Alpine thing from a few years back too, which is no bad thing. Please build it.
Nice that Caterham is still alive .👍
What a man. Bob. So good. Also love the consistency of design philosophy.
These two cars and the revival of SAAB/NEVS/Whatever in Sweden shows that there are still REAL engineering going on and raceheads really don't care what drives their vehicle. It only needs to feel real and entertaining. Love it. The future is bright.
How refreshing is Bob
No skinny leg trousers, crisp shirt, bring watch and the very important " iam the boss" stance with feet wide apart.👍
As a former Lotus owner and petrol head, now EV owner, this filled my heart with joy. Thank you Caterham, I'll be watching closely
This is the most beautiful new EV I've seen so far, knocked it out of the park design-wise!
Love the philosophy of this car/company. Hope it’s realized.
What a beautiful car, in looks and concept. Caterham was born out of Lotus and have continued with their sound and very desirable philosophy, even when Lotus themselves have wavered (such as now). I hope they get this to profitable production. Good luck Caterham.
This car looks fantastic! Their other Caterham 7 EV on display at Goodwood FOS also looks awesome too.
finally a company making a driver car over some stupid high bhp number which really isnt needed. 200-300bhp is plenty for the road and makes it fun

Damn that is a pretty sports car. I could never afford to buy, but I'd love to drive it one day
It's stunning, I want one
I did a track day in a Caterham about 18 years ago. Before and since, it's been dream car of mine. But, with climate change, and the move to EVs, I'd put the idea of owning one on the shelf. Over the past year, after watching many EV conversion videos, I was pondering the possibility of converting a Seven to electric. Wow. Caterham is doing it themselves, and I couldn't be more excited! The coupe is absolutely beautiful and the EV 7 has (less than) a ton of promise!
“The interpretation that we’ve delivered…”
So much humility. Gotta appreciate the delivery!
I really like the idea and it's weird nobody did it already but IMHO they should have gone for for an even smaller battery. For a sunday sprint, I feel 100 mi of range would still be enough. So as a suggestion: have the 55 kWh battery be an upgrade option and go for a smaller base battery.
PS: for reference i'd like to add that my daily driver since 5 years has around 180 mi of range. This has 250. There have been times when i thought: "that battery I don't use did cost me a lot of money". Won't be long until caterham owners think: "that battery I don't use really weighs a lot"
Absolutely brilliant…can’t wait for them to be offered for sale!
I'm liking this more-measured version of Jack! An improving balance between emoting enthusiasm, relaxed interview (given the hectic setting) and conveying some interesting facts, figures and forward-peering details. Nice!
Wow an honest and humble car exec with a great looking/sounding car. I want one.
The car looks great. Something a bit different in the EV world. Thumbs up from me :)
Well IMO they should have ditched the rear seat. No one is going to sit there anyway. And have the batterys right behind the driver for the best balance / weight distribution.
that rear seat passenger will be swaying all over the place. I hoped the upholstery would at least be moulded around the passenger a bit to keep them in place. Still, nice car
@@christophercox9150 Yep totally agree with you there.
Ahh, but what if you get rid of the passenger front seat, put the driver in the middle, then have two passengers in the back bench? Saves the weight of the passenger seat, makes the rear seats viable in the fact that either side has more leg room and makes it more fun for the driver and more convenient because you can get in and out from either side.
@@Parker-- thats actually a really interesting idea

This must be one of the first EVs I’ve been able to look at and not say “God that looks awful!” Well done Caterham
Interesting. You’re saying that out of the 100+ EV’s that have debuted these past 15 years, you didn’t find anything you didn’t consider awful looking?
Regarding this car, it’s not an instant masterpiece of beauty in my opinion, but not awful in any way from my perspective either.
May I ask, are there any current or upcoming EV’s other than this one that you liked appearance-wise? Lotus? Porsche? Tesla? DeLorean? I understand that not all designs appeal to everyone, but surely they can’t *all* be that hard on the eyes.
Hats off to Caterham for more realistic thinking and attitude, I think they deserve success

Good looking car - much more elegant than the usual modern day new car!
It's so pretty that it literally aches to look at. Genuinely amazing. (And i literally mean literally)
I literally looked this car up yesterday after watching an old Top Gear episode featuring Caterham. Great timing!

Another REALLY big advantage of using gear that is already available is that it will make it MUCH cheaper to homologate. And although Caterham is a tiny company, no company can survive only on a very small market. They need to be able to export. Currently they have 2 or maybe 3 models which they can sell in the EU.This would be a fine addition.
A brilliant application of Caterham knowhow. Can't wait to see them in the wild.
It takes me back
Project V is a beautiful car with performance to match.
Amazing. I wish my budget allowed for such a car.
Love Caterham, I wish they could scale up and be able to produce a well-priced "people" EV here in the UK. But guessing those days are long gone now sadly.
I had the fortune to meet Bob at a race track a few months ago without really knowing who he was. Inexcusable, I know, especially since I own a Caterham. Great guy, really seemed to know what he was talking about, and this car is a true Caterham in essence. If they put it into production, I will do everything to add the first one that makes it to Europe to my existing Seven. ;-)
I absolutely LOVE a boss at a car company that is just honest and doesn't speak in hyper-bullshit marketing terms!! Great job Caterham! The EV world needs more cars that are simple and direct without being little plastic toys. Somebody needs to be building a brand new electric 1995 Civic. I don't need stupid remote controlled anything on a car. I'm better a new Caterham will be fantastic! (even if it's not too practical)
I just love this concept! Lightweight evs will be cool.
I like the simplicity of the dash, not overdone with the electronics, and if the Electric 7 concept comes to the market I'd seriously consider one, even if it arrives to market with less BHP.
That Caterham looks stunning, I want one, especially as it hasn't gone berserk with the power output and battery size. What's great is that when solid state batteries are affordable this is coming at EV performance from the right angle for me (lighter weight and driver enjoyment) and should only get better. At least in the UK you can't really enjoy 1000bhp Plaids, as impressive as they are.
Great vid, i missed checking out the Caterham at Goodwood FOS glad to have Jack take us through the specifics 😉⚡️🇬🇧
Looks great, but I'd be more interested in a center drive setup with two seats in the back. It saves weight by removing a dedicated seat, works on both sides of the pond and looks cool as hell. Also, targa top. That to me would make it the best enthusiast EV on the market.
What a great interview with Bob! He comes across as a breath of fresh air (which obviously there will be with this car, since there's no tail-pipe...)
Very practical thinking and beautiful design, it is just perfect!
No joke, this is the most beautiful car design I have seen in 30 odd years.. never expected this from Caterham.. well done!!
That is a fantastic car in every regard.
Hopefully with better battery tech & the prospect of solid state on the horizon it will be a new dawn of enjoyable light weight cars rather than bloated SUVs
Really great to see caterham moving forward. Beautiful design keeping with their core principles not trying to make it something they are not.
Where is the "buy now" button? As a Tesla owner (already 500kg less than a Taycan) THIS is what I have been waiting for. Well done Caterham. Thank you in advance for putting it into production as soon as possible.
Beautiful vehicle fantastic design phenomenal engineering 😊 the other manufacturers need to take notes 📝
Great car. Great presentation from the CEO. I would love to see more of these.
I love the neo retro design with the round screens. This is where Nissan (with the 2018 Leaf.Zero) got it wrong to keep the existing speedometer. I don't have the money for a sports car yet, but maybe some day. It is great that they are using existing designs to save money, this is key to getting the price down and some things have just already been engineered to function perfectly. To bad they won't make a family car with the same phylosophy, because that would be great!
The front looks amazing and I think that a frunk is a luxury that I personaly almosy never use so it maken sense to save cost in it
I’ve never opened the frunk on my ioniq 5. I know it’s there but meh! So long as caterham have a way to top up fluids from elsewhere in the car.
I’d love an autocross EV. Something with just enough battery capacity to run WOT for 5min. It would be light, fast to charge, and could be inexpensive since batteries add so much expense.
Wow! What a beauty! Love the minimalism and that colour! 😍
Looks awesome! If I was in the marked for something like this, I would buy it.
What a great interview from two people who clearly have respect for one another. If there's any chance that I can afford one of these when it's available, I'll buy one.
I want one.
Me too ❤
very cool. I'll be keen when the production version is announced. keep it pure & simple.
This is just stunning! Bravo!
This electric car is in the same weight class as an Mazda MX5... not bad at all.
It's definitely not In the same weight at all!
@@alanmay7929 Mazda MX5 ND2 RF weights 1155kg the Caterham project V weights 1190kg. That’s close enough for me.
@@samuelmagro4254 it's a project car with which battery capacity for which range!? That's the problem it's a project
Great video and WHAT a gloriously beautiful car the Project V is...! WOW... 😎
And I saw the Seven Concept EV at the local Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre here in Sheffield only a few months ago - looked very promising, indeed... 😉
Wow, love the Caterham - finally an EV I want
Absolutely right about first impressions I once passed on a new Alfa GTV because the door handle pulled off when I went to close the door! Never looked at Alfas as a purchase option since.
That is beautiful!
