    The best there ever was! You called it right. She was other-worldly. How did she do it? She makes you FEEL it

    Huge Aretha fan here, much vocal envy. she is just magnificent, and makes it seems so easy. and the power and size of her voice.
    If i could sing a tiny bit like her it would make me very happy
    There is a video of her singing with Mavis Staples, which is very fine

      Right on! I was disappointed when I finally got to see the documentary, because I wanted to hear the complete performance from the album. When she climatically sings “LAZARUS! with so much passion and fervor, it takes you to an ecstatic state. On the album you can hear the church erupt in the way that happens particularly in the black church.

    This is from Amazing Grace, one of the best live recording ever, recorded in 1972 at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in LA. Rev James Cleveland, himself a true gospel legend who you should react to, and the Southern California Community Choir backing them up. The album went double platinum, and won Franklin a Grammy in 1973. It remains today the best selling recording of Aretha’s career, and the highest selling live Gospel album of all time. You should also check out the documentary about the live recording.

    I have never heard Aretha sing gospel? Her father was Rev. CL Franklin.... She started singing when she was 5 in his church... Her sister, Carolyn was a song writer.

    Even when Aretha sang secular music she brought you to church. She is truly one of the giants of music along with Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. They set standards unmatched even though there are some good singers out there. Heaven must be jamming as we speak. Miss you.

    How can you even know the name Aretha Franklin and not know she and Gospel go together like peanut and jelly? I’m happy to see a young person dig real vocal prowess. They don’t get much better than the Queen of Soul. I could list artists for an hour and only scratch the surface, but try out “Sarah Vaughan” and get back at me.

    hi charlie: i am so happy you are finally able to hear this...i think aretha is also my favorite voice and this song knocks me out completely every time i hear it. i lived in oakland when she appeared at the fillmore in san francisco...could not get permission to go as i was considered too young by my mother at the time!!! i did eventually get to see her about 1980 in London (which my mother paid for!!!) but this recording is almost too much for my emotions...but not quite...

    We know you like a key change, double clap & a two chord. Please explain what a two chord is

    • @TheCharlieSmithChannel
      @TheCharlieSmithChannel  Рік тому +2

      So a 2 chord (or a sus2 chord as its technically known) is where the middle note (3rd) of the triad is taken down 2 half steps or semitones to the 2nd. So where a C major chord would consist of the notes C - E - G, a Csus2 would be C - D - G.
      It's nothing special when played on a piano but when a choir sings it I absolutely love it
