it's crazy that this video comes out today, because im working on becoming a sysadmin, and it's my birthday, wild stuff! thanks for the vid as always, everything you make is extremely useful! thank you for all you do, as a video creator, and as a prior sysadmin!
I will always thank the teachers for insisting that I learn infrastructure even though I was a terrible student. I never forgot that knowledge and everything I did afterwards was thanks to that discipline. Sysadmin is a fascinating profession.
Nobody ever give sysadmin the appreciation they deserve, so i will learn the entire vertical structure required in IT and run my own company, do not take disrespect or stay in the shadow when you do literally everything.
It takes me longer to close a ticket in our terrible ticketing system than it takes me to resolve the problem listed most of the time. Please don’t put in a ticket just to say “Thanks!” for SysAdmin day. And a phone call isn’t much better. However, a simple email works great. Even better, obviously, is an actual, tangible gift, but in the absence of that, a simple email is sufficient.
I have been here for 3 years now. I have never had my desk phone ring. I get emails, but never a ring. Not even sure why I have a desk phone. LOL... Linux systems admin.
DISAGREE WITH THE PHONE CALL!!!! During work hours, every beep/ring/noise/etc. is a potential stresser. They might be terribly busy with other crap, and you ringing the phone just for a social grace and a "warm and fuzzy quick call" may as well be a wrong number caller or a spammer. Some environments might be laid back and it's not a big deal, but in my personal experience, the sys admin's to-do list is never-ending, and it's a race to keep on top of it and keep your fingers crossed something catastrophic doesn't break in the meantime because when it does, everything gets put on hold to focus on the crisis. I suggest an email with a clear subject like "Non-Urgent, Just Wishing You A Happy SysAdmin Day!" and maybe elaborate in the email, paste in some cheesy clip-art and call it good. Latent messaging on the clock is FAR more preferred than the immediate "Ah crap, the phone is ringing!". How many people know what it's like wondering if it's the CEO needing more paper put into his printer RIGHT NOW, and NOT answering that phone call is NOT an option? Yeah, don't call. Send an email. Or put in a ticket. ;) Lastly, (I can't believe this didn't make your list), you can't go wrong with a premium package of bacon from a local boutique butcher. Any bacon is good, but extra-premium bacon REALLY says a much bigger THANK YOU and will be extra appreciated! ....well, unless they're vegan. Then you'll have to pick something else lol!
I've been a Linux administrator for over two decades (and in IT over 35 years). I couldn't give two 5h!ts about being patted on the back, given a cake, or sent some dumb email telling me I''m appreciated. Just pay me, and rate rise me each year, and when I save the day kiss my ...
I used to work as sys and network admin in a small hospital, but they literally didn't see me working if I don't code/build app for them. They want programmer. I can't code
My two 2-cent tips: 1) You should put the date "28 July" in the title. 2) You should post this earlier because only some people check the UA-cam feed every minute. Also, in some parts of the world, it might already be the "29 July" when this is posted.
I'm good.. just as long as the supply of coffee.. instant ramen.. and the occasional reasonably up to date manga gets thrown through the grating I shall just carry on. Does the sun still come up in the mornings or has that global warming done for it yet?.. I haven't been out of this basement in decades...
You call him "Jaw"? To hell with sysadmin appreciation, learn to pronouce your cohost's name for heaven's sake 😂 to hear how "João" sounds, use Google translate's text to speech in Portuguese.
Thanks for including me and thank you to all the real SysAdmins out there!

It’s great for people like me with ADHD brains. Always something new to learn

Even an MSP needs clients....and they will still bitch.
Perfect timing. I was working through an issue with Fastmail. I tacked on my appreciation message to another response. Great video BTW.
It’s good to be appreciated by someone Jay. Usually the only time we hear from anyone is when something goes wrong.

Thank you to all SysAdmins
If they do things right people will assume they don’t do much if anything at all.
People only notice when shit goes wrong.
Great video 🫶 Thank you
Indeed, the heroes reporting for pagerduty!

Sysadmins might get more appreciation if they weren't so smug and crabby all the time.
Not for beginner's on bash terminal
Too bad there will be 1/100th of the jobs when AI automates almost all of it.
