This year I'm really hoping to gain the courage to approach a publisher or figure out how to publish on KDP. I'm learning everything I need to know to play around with formatting and editing so that even if I don't format and edit my own work (or it doesn't make the official cut), I know how to do it all in the name of exciting myself to write. Thank you for these videos, Bethany.
I’m definitely going the KDP route. I’ve been trying to go the traditional route since 2018, and every agent who reads my manuscript falls in love with my writing and my world-building and my characters, but reject it because it’s “not a fit” for them. Overtime, I’ve learned that they don’t actually judge based on quality and content, but trends and sell value. What’s currently and has been trending on the market for a while now are stories like ACOTAR and Throne of Glass, so if you’re writing something closer to being along the lines of the Lord of the Rings or Dune, agents personally don’t feel like something like that will sell and will reject it just because. I care more about being published and having my story out there than I do about earning money, so I’ve pretty much given up on traditional. The market for that is extremely bias and extremely nish-led.
Hi thank you for all your advice. I am a new author, only been published in newspaper, and a tour guide. I wrote a novel my cattegory is Travel Adventure as a single woman. I am a floral, wedding, event designer and interior landscape designer. I wrote this book five years ago and recetly decided to pull this out and begin editing it and getting it published. Now that I am almost done I thought omg I make everything beautiful for people all over the world. Why would I publish a boring ass book with nothing of beauty in it? The Title is Cattleya Queen Colombia, of course the book cover has a huge orchid on the front, so now I want to put orchids on chapter headers but in a vintage style. I have a real editor, he did the book cover and its fabulous but he bailed on me with the book because his old boss called him back to work and has no time to help me. So I found you! I hope I can do this. Im super picky and as a designer I of course want it to reflect me. HOW???
I am not sure if you will see this but i was wondering if we place the image into our document to make our chapter headers, is there a way to make the table of contents pick up where each chapter is supposed to start or would it be better not to do a ToC
I misspoke, once you have your chapter header with image created, is there a video where you demonstrate how to add it to your book? 📕 I have watched the video on how to add images to your book but did not see chapter headers with images being added and how to do it.
Great video! I hoped to come across a video that taught about creating fancy headers. That is something I'm definitely interested in. I would love to create a two-page header, almost like the one you showed in your starter video (I believe) that goes across two pages. Would I need to use the book size and create two parts? I also remember that you said you had to cut your map to allow it to fit on both pages, would that be the best way to do that? Sorry for all the questions. This video really had me glued to my seat (haha) and I can't wait to try it!
Hi Bethany. Thanks so much for your tutorials. Your books are mazing! I have a problem. I use MS Word for formatting but I recently had to format a 100 page book with many images/illustrations. I am having a real challenge with placing the image (bleed) on the left and facing the corresponding chapter on the right. Do you have any advise/and/or tutorial?
Hi Bethany, I'm kind of confused on which template to use on Canva. I've watched the video more than once and I feel I'm missing something. Could you please help me on that?
Great video Bethany!! I'm loving this playlist (though I'm no where near needing to format my book yet) so helpful. I've got a Canva question for you. When you make the cute Chapter headers do you need to download the individual Chapters (like all 52 chapters) or can you download let say, Chapter One and then edit it outside of Canva and add it to your document? Hopefully I'm making sense and it's okay if you don't know the answer I can try your TA Google later lol.
Thanks Anna! Haha great question, and yep since it's an image, it's not something you can edit outside of canva the way you would edit a word doc or PDF, so you'll need to create a separate image in canva for each chapter. I believe after you make each separate chapter header, you can download them all at once as a zip file, but I always have issues when I do this so I just download them one file at a time. (There might be a less time-consuming way, but it really doesn't take too long. :)

This is BEYOND amazing. Thank you so much for creating this playlist.

Omg I'm so glad I discovered you! What great content, and great personality! Thank you for being yourself
This was SO helpful and you're one of the first videos I've commented on because it was that engaging and informative. THANK YOU!!
I saw that bleed kind of artwork in Alexandra Bracken's Passenger dualogy for the first time . It looks neat and very freaking cool
Thank you for your lessons. Did you show how to down load the work to word?

Canva did have a template with Wattpad in the title (I used it all the time) but I think they changed it to just "book" cover last summer.
Ahhh! That makes sense haha
This was so helpful!! (Lol, your commentary made me laugh some times XD)
I loved this one, it helped me so much :) also, the chapter header at 6:28 looks soooo gorgeous! Can you maybe tell me the name of this book?
Thank you! And that's "How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories" by Holly Black :)
@@BethanyAtazadeh Thank you!
This is awesome thank you.
Such great information--and yes, I do still expect Penny to be your TA, lol.
Haha, she would make a great TA! :D And thank you!
This is really cool, thank you!
Yay! I'm so glad you like it!

Hello! Also after we finish a chapter, do we have to leave a full page blank in the word document?
What if I do the art myself?
