- Bill Mason while working for the Shell Motor Company's film unit assembled an impressive series of documentaries that trace the history of motor racing.
The first film shows the early years as Panhards raced against Mercedes. The German Kaiser showed up at the races.
The French Grand Prix with Lancia, Fiat, Renault and Hotchkiss squaring off.
Talbot races Delage at Brooklands. Accidents abound. George Boillot becomes a star. And Grand Prix racing attract huge crowds.

And weather or not that’s true or not it doesn’t matter
Because that statement says so much about humanity
Some people may see cars as just transportation but to us having someone come up and insult your pride and joy is everything to some people
And racing is the only way to settle the argument of who’s better
Weather that be at some illegal street race or at the 24 hours of Le Mans
The same logic applies
We just wanna know who has the best car
Sums up much of human history really. "Mine's better than yours" "The hell it is!"

Hilarious and very entertaining as well as informative. Those engine noises though, having been added when the compilation was assembled, it’s a pity sound wasn’t around in the early days so that we could hear the genuine sound of these wonderful machines.
Interesting some of the surviving cars from this era can be regularly sen at Goodwood in England. The gigantic Fiat looks suspiciously like the FIAT S76, later also known as FIAT 300 HP Record and nicknamed "The Beast of Turin".
This was a car built in 1910 by the Italian company FIAT specifically to beat the land speed record held in those years by the Blitzen Benz. Its 28,353 cc displacement engine delivered 290 hp. Only two examples were built. One of which has been restored to original specifications and regularly appears at Goodwood, having been driven on public roads to the circuit from the owner’s home. Many elderly motors appear and some race at the Festival of Speed and the Revival, where no vehicles are permitted on the track or in the confines of the circuit made before 1966 when Goodwood initially ceased to host official events. This makes the Revival a very special weekend event, spectators are encouraged to dress in period clothing from the first days of motoring up tom”The Swinging Sixties” WW2 garb being very popular as the airdrome was associated with the wartime RAF. Itstill functions today, early aircraft feature at the revival and on non-event days light aircraft use the base.
Search UA-cam for various videos some on the Goodwood channel, one showing one journey included eye popping footage of this fire spitting monster re-fuelling at a petrol station en-route, the staff were somewhat panicked by the noise and flames!

First track race was in 1890's in the Bronx New York at the Morris Park Horse Track, Mercedes was a competitor along with several brass era cars, Speeds as high as 70 mph were recorded. This was the original track of the Belmont Stakes , now the area is all residential as open spaces close to Manhattan were becoming expensive by the 1910's . You can see an image of it by googling "Morris Park horsetrack, first super speedway"
So when red dead redemtion took place racing and cars was allready old news 🤔

@@paulkauchick6782 Well the #1 Driver was a guy named Chevrolet He was on record saying there was no finer car than a mercedes, Then he made Chevrolet and was mad he could never drive another mercedes in public ever again.

Love this era of racing when men where real men and cars where total animals
Cars in this period were so slow and easy to drive. Much more boring than later on

@@canismajoris6733 They were slower, yes but no less dangerous. When the French GP was at Dieppe 8 people over the 3 races held there were killed. At Amiens 5 people were killed. The cars had wooden wheels and wooden chassis (at least up until around 1907 or so) public road tracks were anywhere between 40 and 100 miles long, the roads were made of dirt and gravel, and to just simply operate the cars was stupidly complex- the controls on some of those cars were so badly laid out that you needed 3 arms, one leg and a degree in mechanical engineering just to drive them.
I wish someday that I could slap my wife like they did back then. But the bitch is way bigger the me.
@@canismajoris6733 you're coming exudes ignorance they were slower yes but more dangerous and probably even harder to drive just for one example the chemistry for rubber was so inconsistent that the tires were incredibly poor quality compared to later times and that alone made it difficult for road holding the fact that the roads themselves weren't as well made made it more difficult and the fact that this was over a hundred years ago when they had rudimentary suspension steering components chassis etc made it more difficult and dangerous and there were many more things as well

Well i can imagine that some of them lived until the 50s or even 60s, so if we search a lot on the internet we may find some interviews ecc... but i think that it would be really difficult to find something on these guys
@@pianortd4800 if any of them did 3 races.didnt crash.then retired and lived normaly they easily could have lived to 100.seems possible to me.

It’s been said that racing was born give minutes after the second car was built!
Many of those engines had pistons more liters than a modern v8. Note to creator tires don't squeal on dirt roads. Funny reminded me of the old Hawaii 50 when they squealed tires while throwing sand on the beach.

Everything is logic. A lot of the actual biggest car company was simple racer with there own car.

Drivers had to be strong. They didn't have power steering back then.
they didnt have 500kg of aero at 220mph pushing down on the steering rack then either ;) but yeh stones. 2 drivers killed in practice but still the race goes on 16:00 !!

This would be great if the sound was synced... also they could have researched the sounds of the original engines... many antique vehicles were recorded on vinyl in the 50's and early 60's

Way off topic. But only thing i could think of is the safety of the designs. Knowing the only way we ever improved our safety ... was thru terrible accidents. Weve come a long way.
