Cotton or Katan is Little or Jr. in Hebrew since Hebrew in Puritan society was a vernacular language on par or more important than English. The Hebrew word for Increase is Marbeh from which one gets the word Rabbi. It can mean Greater or Sr. So Increase Mather was either Rav or Rabbi Mather in Hebrew. Or even better he was Mather Sr. while Cotton Mather was Mather Jr. And yes they were historical figures in Mass. Bay Colony.

Fun fact for ya'll: witchcraft does not equal devil worship or even the belief in devils/demons. Satan and others like him are all Christian concepts, and most witches certainly aren't Christian (although, granted, that is a thing).

Back in the day witches were satanic- or at the very least diabolical. Pagan witches existed in ancient history, yes, like the Thessalian witches. Pagan witches were quite common in Ancient Greece and Rome. And I don’t mean magicians, that’s different- witches were treated in ancient times the exact same way they were in Christian times. They were feared and their magic was RARELY accepted and public. Witchcraft is to be hidden.
