Don’t know how many times I passed you over when looking for bee tips. When you said CanadianTire I put the brakes on. Always looking to Canadian keepers because I can identify with the location being here in Canada as well. Always good stuff relating to weather and such.
Phil is the most badass Beeman on UA-cam. Almost never need a suit, not even a veil! I wonder how the donated bees won't ball the queen at the receiving colony when you directly add two frames with bees and shook additional bees directly into that box. At that stage most of the bees are foreign. I have done similar things before. In many cases the queen will be balled. Now I only add one frame with bees at a time. Or I keep the queen in a cage if I have to add multiple frames of bees in one shot.
I think this tecnique only works in the early spring when the bees are just happy to have any queen. Once the hives get more populous it doesn't work as well. I find queenless bees are more likely to ball a queen then bees that come straight from a happy hive. Active foraging to keep them busy helps as well.
Hi Phil, thank you for sharing your experience! I wonder, don't bees fight cause they have different q pheromones? Doesn't the queen gets in danger when you add bees from another colony?
Had to do a lot of equalizing myself this spring, just not to the extent you guys up further north had to. Kills me going through yards where almost half the hives need a substantial boost to become viable, makes me think as a beekeeper I did something wrong even though mother nature looks awfully guilty. The goal now is to maintain and make a honey crop. Prices are good right now so that should bring some relief. All we can do is keep our head down and chug through the work!

You don’t have to be crazy to keep bees in Canada. But you’ll often feel like you are getting there…
Good information. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Your seat doubles as your funnel for shaking bees, smart!
you can always find a use for a sturdy super.

In early spring you can get away with this in my experience.

We are in full chug mode this week. Rain all weekend.
Hi Phil been learning from your videos. .. so what happen to the white box of bees that you separated and put on the ground?
my recollection is that the few bees in that box were shaken out in front of their hive.
Ha I enjoyed your video it was good, I wish I did not have to wear a veil or suit dont u get stung in the face have a blessed week
you don't have to wear a veil if you don't mind a few stings in the face. If you don't like stings in the face, the veil is definitely a good choice.
