I think I read somewhere that babies aren't really aware of things that aren't in their immediate view so I'm guessing they weren't really aware who was holding them since they weren't looking at them. Being aware of this, I believe some doctors who suspect a nonverbal child is a victim of child abuse put their hand behind their head and then bring it around to their peripheral vision to see if they flinch (which indicates fear of being hit) because they don't really know the hand is there until they see it. It's sad but fascinating how human development works

Trust me. The baby will know the difference before reaching adulthood. My Dad and Uncle Tom are twins that look extremely similar (technically feternal, but they look the part of identical). I can tell them apart. Then I again, I also managed to tell several look alike twins apart in high school within three months. Actually it became essential in softmore year of high school, so I was guiding to the right boy for a show in marching band.
