  • This is some video I took in early 1986 at Bournemouth. I had just bought a JVC video camera, with separate recorder that was in a shoulder bag and recorded onto full size VHS tapes. This was just before the all-in-one camcorder was produced by JVC that used mini-VHS tapes.
The video is of railway activity at Bournemouth Central Railway Station, in the BR Corporate Blue era. There are third rail electric multiple units of types 4-Vep, 4-Cig, 4-Bep and 4-Rep, with 4TC trailer units. The Cig-Bep-Cig combination is unusual, as is the 12 car unit made up from three 4-Vep units.
At one point, a Class 47 diesel locomotive trundles through hauling 100 ton oil tankers.
Of special interest is the changeover from electric to diesel power for the Weymouth bound train. One or two unpowered 4TC trailer units were pushed down to Bournemouth from London Waterloo by the powerful 4-Rep electric unit, At Bournemouth, the push-pull fitted class 33 locomotive couples to the front of the trailer units, and hauls them down to Weymouth, leaving the 4-Rep unit behind. For London bound trains, the 4-Rep would leave the sidings and pull into the platform. The trailer units, pushed by the class 33 locomotive, driven from the front cab of the trailer units would pull in behind the 4-Rep, and couple up. The 4-Rep would then drag the trailers up to London, leaving the diesel locomotive behind.
It was a very cold and windy day, and the camera was too heavy for the tripod I had back then, so the video is hand-held and very wobbly. Also, much of it was shot into a low sun. Later on you will see that it was sleeting. I therefore have to apologise for the poor quality of this video, but I hope the content makes up for it.

I used to enjoy seeing 432s racing through Brookwood…sparks flying! I recall when they married them with 73s towards the end of their reign…they really sparked as they raced through! Great vid!

Certainly miss the slammers. The sounds and smells I can still remember them now. And little 33s. Miss them running about now. I know there still are a few about but I do miss them . Nice video

Ah yes - many memories of arriving and departing on the 4Vep Waterloo Bouremouth stopping train - on the now little used platform 1!!

What a valuable recording! being a Kent Coast Lad I didn't know about this arrangement at Bournemouth so I missed a trick there, You've captured the very thing I wanted to see with the Class 33's coupling up the 4TC's brilliant!

Ah, memories. I grew up in Bournemouth and spent many happy hours spotting and then travelling on REPs. The 22.12 up stopper used to be a 4-REP on its own sometimes, went like the proverbial.....
The period in the vid is when the REPs had started to be withdrawn so that their guts could be re-used in the 442s, in true SR tradition. hence the CIG-BEP-CIG formation (usually seen on the Pompey line) and the 12-VEP on the 92 service.
Nice to see the good old 33 there waiting for duty

.....Calling at Southampton and Bournemouth.... as they used to announce a Waterloo! With 4TC units and a diesel on the rear...!

I once rode in a 4-REP on it's own.. which was a rare occurrence boy could those things accelerate when they didn't have a couple of TCs in tow. The run was very lively to say the least.

It certainly does make up for the weather. This is a brilliant video and the first recording i have seen of REPs and TCs on film, or at all for that matter. This is an instant 5* and Favourites, seeing as i am a younger generation of Enthusiast and missed out on these by about 25 years.

4-VEP has a door to every seating bay and shallower windows
4-REP has 2 motor bogies on each Driving end
4-CIG has two motor bogies under coach with the guards van in (as does a 4 VEP)
4-BIG = as a CIG but with a buffet car instead of an open 2nd
4-CEP does not have jumper cable recesses at the front end and a slightly offset headcode panel
4-BEP= 4-CEP with a buffet car instead of an open 2nd
4-TC has no motor bogies and needs a 4-REP or a loco to push pull it!
    hope this helps

Well done! Truly nostalgic stuff, and somewhat rare. Interesting to see how it all worked in B.R. days.......largely because they were too skint to install 3rd rail westward.
Pity it wasn't on V2000, (but let's not be picky). On zoom the Cromptons look nearly as long as a Duff and almost Broad Gauge.

Yes they drew so much power that they could not be used "switched on" with any other tractor unit or electric loco I seem to recall. Effectively the REPs drew the equivalent power of about 2 and a half to 3 conventional 4-car EMUs

It coupled up to the unpowered 411 TC unit in order to drag it from Bournemouth to Weymouth, which was not electrified at the time. It then pushed it back to Bournemouth, controlled from the front cab of the TC unit. The 4-REP unit would power one or two of the 4 car TC units between Bournemouth and Waterloo. The 4-REP had a similar power rating to a Deltic, by the way. The TC units could go nowhere on their own as they had no motors,

I think you mean Class 491 or 438 for 4TC, class 411 is a EMU and can run on its own

You can see the old B&Q next to Holdenhurst road bridge ! Demolished to make way for student accommodation wasn't it ? Is that the old St.Pauls church to the right ? Or the old town hall building?
