  • Here is a DIY on how to change the oil and filters on a 1994-98 Porsche 911 (993) Carrera. If you are a 993 owner and on the fence about diving into DIYs, hopefully this video puts your mind at ease...Oil changes are a great way to get familiar with the 993. I highly recommend changing the oil in your own car if you can! I hope this video will help you get started!

    Just found your vid. Many thanks for a highly professional and informative video. More importantly it instils me with confidence. I shall be ordering my oil service kit tomorrow. Incidentally I love your 4S - great car. I have a stock Carrera 2 owned and loved for 19 years now. Great work and regards from the UK.

    Well done! I've done many DIY maintenance items/suspension/Cam Chain covers on my 95' with a 3.8. Your video absolutely helps us save myself and many 993 owners money, and increases the satisfaction of owning this amazing air-cooled 911!

      Thanks so much Brian! Appreciate the comment! I think you hit the nail on the head. 3.8L!! SWEET, tell me more! Factory power kit? Those are some serious projects you did, congrats! As you know, it's a slippery slope! Next up clutch, engine drop! LOL. Helping (or nudging) 993 owners into the world of DIY is totally my goal Bolts are bolts and it's so interesting and satisfying to be familiar with the car on that level. It also gives you insight into the true condition of everything. I think tackling DIYs has put an equally large smile on my face over the last 6 years I've owned this car. I'm going to be posting a few more DIYs over the winter so definitely stay tuned! :)

      911Percent. Of course! The 3.8 was built by a professional shop however. The PO, at 40k, decided he wanted 'more power' (I purchased it with 72k). The receipts I have-24k!! show he put in mahle pistons-I would be a little nervous rebuilding a motor as you need so many speciality tools to do this job correctly I think. But I've done enough work on cars and l methodically think through my projects that I would consider it. I did drop half the engine last year to replace some leaking cam covers, and a 70k big tune-up at the same time as it was easiest to do the plugs and wires then. I replaced most of the suspension bits as well, and Bilstein b6 and MO33's springs before Rennsport V the year before. Of course I spend over half the time cleaning, and organizing and labeling everything as I go so it always takes me longer. Ya the car pulls nicely. Handles sweet. The 3.8 is in a polar silver cab & sure wish it was a 4s like yours man! Probably one of the faster 993 cabs out there though!

    Jacob, That was awesome. I'm at 6 quarts now and my 96 993 C4S is starting to act "full". Thought I'd take a break t confirm the amount of oil needed and came upon this fantastic video. Next up is to raise the rear of the car to get a few more quarts in. Keep up the good work, Brian

    Hi Jacob, One of the absolute best oil change videos out there! Really fun to watch. The 993 is a little weird with those two filters. I think there is a filler neck that should extend to help with filling. I hear on most cars they have either been removed or fell in the tank. I got a replacement for our '95 so I'll install that with the next change. Also, you might want to try nut drivers on the clamps. They seem to go faster and less tendency to slip off. The Philips are nice. Most of my cars are just slotted so a pain. For me the 3.2 is up for an oil change. I'm going to try to close to your quality :) Thanks for the great video! Franny

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching and the comment Franny! I wish there was an oil fill on the quarter panel to the tank. I had that goose neck inside the filler, but removed it ~ people say it disintegrates after time and falls in the tank :/

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      I think there is a mod that is circulating around Rennlist where you can bend a portion of the float in the oil tank to have the gauge read more accurately. But I would still check the dipstick physically ~ because that won't lie! Thanks for watching! :)

    Nice video, really shows the bits and pieces to remove/replace well.
    My first DIY oil change was a few weeks ago and took 3 or 4 hours but will be MUCH quicker in the future. Refilling was a real pain - good tip on lowering the front end of the car - will have to try it. I did it with jackstands which was a little claustrophobic. How high do you lift the car with your scissor lift to comfortably work under it?

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Awesome Bob, 3-4 hours is pretty sweet timing for the first one!! My first one was messy, and took all day lol... Glad to hear that the filling tip will help you in the future!! The scissor lift goes up to 52" max, but, my garage isn't fully set up yet and it's not standing in the right spot, so I'm limited to probably 40" max. Very comfy. Lift has many safety settings so adjustment to the right height for something specific is done in a flash. I dropped the engine and trans to do a clutch flywheel and major service a few summers ago, the lift was integral. :)

    It is way more fun to remove the sump drain bolt on the side when the engine is hot, the oil comes flying out like a garden hose on full blast as if your Porsche suddenly had a bad case of diarrhea, also doing it while hot gets most of the old oil out. Just be sure to wear something to protect yourself from the hot oil flying out.

    Wow--I know have a greater appreciation for Japanese engineering (in its simplicity) and the Honda S2000. Great 993!

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching!!! I must say, S2000s are in my top 10 list of
      notable cars ever! I'm a big fan! Not sure I'd consider the additional
      components of a cooling system on a S2K such as the waterpump, radiator,
      hoses, coolant, thermostat, timing belt, etc "simple"! The reason for
      the 2 filters is smart; filter 1 cleans oil from the tank before it
      enters the engine, filter 2 filters the oil coming out of the engine
      back to the oil tank. Pretty sweet engineering I'd say! Just a PITA to
      DIY vs newer 911s ~ those take no time to change the oil! :)

    • @sungod1976
      @sungod1976 7 років тому

      Good points. Fortunately Honda put a timing chain on the s2000 since the beginning, although they still use timing belts on some of their newer cars with a V6 engine. You should look into picking one of those up while you can still find good examples. Subscribed for future videos on the 911. What editing software are you using?

  • @paultruckle4456

    Would it not have been prudent to take the DME relay out and bring it up to pressure / circulate the new oil by then turning over the engine?

  • @HorizonsUnlimited
    @HorizonsUnlimited 7 років тому

    I once had a stuck-on oil filter (it was torqued to spec 11 Nm / 97 lbf.in.) on my motorcycle and the only access is from the end with an oil filter socket...which simply slipped over the oil filter facets when trying to unscrew it. I no longer coat the oil filter seal with oil; instead I coat it with Dow Corning vacuum grease (silicone grease) and I haven't had a stuck-on oil filter issue since.

      Is there a safety bar that you connect in case the seals fail while the car is lifted?

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому +1

      Yes, There is a safety bar with steel notches that travels up as the lift goes up ~ like a rollercoaster. It clicks each time it advances a "safety" tooth. Once you have the car up as high as you want, you lower it a little and it rests on the steel notch vs the hydraulics. When you're done you raise the car a few inches, pull on a safety cable to release the safety, and the lift lowers down.

    Sweet car man! It's beautifully clean underneath. How do you do that? Pressure wash (hope not) or with some detergent? Another thing; why don't you just run it on the lift for a while before putting that ducting and the wheel arch back in. Then you can get close visually to look for leaks.

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Thanks so much! No, not pressure washed! Just COUNTLESS hours of elbow grease my friend! LOL! I used a ZEP orange degreaser/cleaner to agitate the cosmoline and after that it was a lot of cleaning by hand. I had the engine and transmission out for a clutch and major service 2 summers ago and spent weeks obsessively cleaning everything. Having the lump out of the engine bay and on a dolly made it "easier" to get it as pristine as it is.. There is also a dry-ice blasting method that works really well without any chances to damage. There might be a service like that close to you! Google it; amazing results at a fraction of the time if you were to do it by hand... Hope this helps! About starting the car on the lift ~ Good idea but I don't want exhaust fumes in the garage (my garage is attached to the house). Thanks for watching! :)

    Hi Jacob, still referencing your video whenever I do an oil change on my 993. Here's to us meet one day! I am going to the Porsche Palooza every year. Hit me up if you want to join, as we could tag along most of the way together (live in Michigan).

    I know this is an older video so I'm hoping you'll still respond. Do you put the plastic transmission cover back on or just leave it off permanently? TIA

  • @sinazahedinejad7007

    The guage reads perfectly but just till the last quarter, so mainly when the gage drops, means you have to add quarter oil to the car, it is the same in both 964 and 993 I own, very good clip tho, is it 15w 50 you use?

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching! My gauges have never accurately displayed the level, so I rely on physical evidence and read the dip stick on level ground instead. I use 20/50 oil with 1100+ ppm ZDDP levels.

  • @AlejandroBelloRD
    @AlejandroBelloRD 7 років тому

    Very cumbersome, but doable. Specially since old 911 only need spark plugs and regular oil changes to keep running forever.

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Agreed, it's not that bad. Once you do this once, it's quite easy and you just end up doing it faster and faster. My biggest goal is to always be cleaner than the last oil change. Thank you for watching! :)

    what instrument rings are you using on your dashboard? they are very nice and not as bold as most of the others. (at minute 8:45 ) greetings from Germany

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Hi! These are called Chris Walrod Gauge Rings. Not sure if these are available anymore, but they are essentially perfectly machined aluminum rings that tightly fit over the plastic rings. If you google them you should be able to find the Rennlist threads where they were available as group buys. Good luck!! Hope this helps!

    I could be wrong (I often am) but shouldn't you remove the oil filter with the drain bolt out? To allow air back in to the top of the system and to get all of the oil out.

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому +1

      Smart thinking! I've done it both ways and did not notice any more or less oil coming out though. Both the drain plug and filter are at the most bottom part of the oil tank, so in theory, unscrewing the filler cap in the engine bay would do what you're saying with sucking air in from the top. Thanks for watching and commenting Duncan!! Cheers my friend! :)

      Hi, the drain pan is a 15L generic plastic pan - I bought it from my local automotive part store. Here is a link: www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/plastic-oil-drain-pan-15-l-0283113p.html . I hope this helps (and google translates sanely lol)

    Hello good video, but you don't need to remove the oil return tube under the small oil filter to get the small oil filter out. I have changed the filter on mine and I have never had to remove the oil return tube.
    Once you have taken off the heater pipes as you show the small oil filter will come out OK.
    It just saves a bit of time and mess.

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому +2

      Hello, thank you! I like removing as much of the old oil out of the system as I can, and the oil line has a bunch in there. It's true, you could force your hand in there and pull out the old filter without undoing the feed line. But I find it more messy, because it doesn't drop out easily without a bit of oil spilling out.. I am in no way suggesting that my process is the right/only way to do it ~ This is the way I do it on my car. :)

    • @citori2
      @citori2 7 років тому

      Hello buddy, absolutely, I was just pointing out that you don't HAVE to take the tube off if you don't want to. I enjoy watching your videos, thanks..

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      No worries! Yeah, my car is sitting at 993RS +5mm height, so it doesn't clear the lift without the ramps I built. My plan for the future is to sink it into the concrete garage floor so it disappears out of the way. But it works this way for now. It's a great setup for general DIY. Another cool thing is, the DirectLift clears an engine and transmission drop on the awd 993 without any mods to the lift. Both the BendPak and SnapOn scissor lifts need to have the rear crossbraces chopped for clearance - too dangerously sketchy for me!!

    You didn’t replace the o ring on the tank drain plug, or the oil line to the case. Purchase the proper tool to remove those oil filters. They are only supposed to be 20 newton meters tight. We use 15w50 on these cars
