What, from a rider that hasn’t even fully escaped being a teenager! @@michaeldobson8859 I was actually waiting for someone just like how you sound with stupid comments based on what. His age? Age is just a number and as you don’t know this individual then how can you judge him? By age alone? Absolutely not! I’ve been riding for nearly 50 years, raced at the highest level in Australia during the 90’s with over 1,000 laps around my old home racetrack being Phillip Island under race conditions (not ride days), competed in motocross during the 80’s and have owned over 30 bikes. Guess what? I’m still learning. Plus the original comment was about relevant comments to an individual (just as it reads). To further clarify the stupidity of your comment, when I was about the same age as this journalist, I had an employee who commented to me post a promotion that he’d been working longer than I’d been living so don’t expect me (him) to take directives from. My response was simple and in two parts. As all I said was that my mother had been driving longer than I’d been living and that she still was a crap driver. After 200000 kms + exploring Australia on 4 BMW GSA's over the years, I can safely say there's still no place I'd rather be than on the back of the legendary rhino.
What if you see a woods or dirt road and want to see where it goes while you are on a long touring trip. I'm not taking a goldwing down there, but the gs is perfect for that. And that is why I want a gs for a long distance tourer.
I’ve test ridden the new GSA a couple of times. The new bike handles miles better than the old 1250. The wind protection is excellent (I’m 6ft 3). The ASA shifting is as smooth as butter and when used manual mode is the smoothest shifter on the market. My only issue with the bike is the ride, which is very hard. In addition the comfort is made worse by a rock hard seat. Without that comfort issue i would definitely upgrade from my 1250.
Awesome video! I recently went to my BMW dealer to get a service done on my r1250gs. The r1300gsa in person is a beautiful bike. The pictures don't do it justice. Great review. Best!
Correct and I love it! If I were to sell my car and all my bikes and could only pick one bike to replace them all (and I wouldn’t live in a city where this would get stolen within hours) the 1300GSA would be a serious contender.
I'm in awe of BMW's marketing department. They have convinced so many people that an extremely heavy and expensive bike is suitable for off-road. To make it even more perfect, most never go off road. I got caught up in the spell and bought a 1200GS when it came out in 2005. Back then, it made slightly more sense as the market was dominated by sports bikes, and I couldn't tolerate the sport riding position. The price was also far more reasonable in 2005. But today, it makes no sense to me (other than ego) as to why you would want such a big, heavy, expensive, and complex bike. If you own the bike for a while, there are so many electronic features that can fail and will cost you an arm and a leg to repair. In 1983 I owned a Honda XR 200 (98kg/215 lbs). Now that was an off road machine. People are still rinding them today. I would like to see how many 2024 GS's are on the road in 40 years time.
Took me three GSs including a 1250 GSA to realise it’s marketing BS, love my Ducati and I’m soon replacing my Multi V2S with a V4S version and they stay on tarmac. Think the new GSA is so fugly, the standard is better but still the same noisy engine😢😉
The R1200GS (oil cooled) was the sweet spot bike. It was >50lbs lighter than the R1150GS, but had more power. With water cooling, they’ve gained back the weight. Even with the “lightening” of the R1300, the new R1300GSA is 33lbs heavier than my 2012 R1200GSA with nearly a gallon less fuel. I do take my GS off road, and it is certainly more of a handful than a light 500 DS. But, I still need to ride over 100 miles to get to the dirt so a 500 isn’t practical for me. I’m leaning more toward a middleweight to replace mine. I think the newer GSs are really great touring bikes if you only do pavement or some well maintained dirt roads. Realistically, an RT is probably a better bike for most people, but it doesn’t look like it could go off-road. With SUVs so popular in the US, the style is part of the appeal even if they never go off-road. If you are honest about your mission, I don’t think the GS is bad. I just found the new engine to be so smooth it had none of the character of the boxer in my GSA, so I wouldn’t buy one myself.
Electronics (complex) that has been available in cars for years ... without any problems. So why should it cause all kinds of problems when mounted to a bike? It will not. Cars are more reliable than ever, thats the fact. When it comes to off roading...its is excellent, but heavy and expensive. That counts against, nothing else. Every year BMW invites to GS Trophy event, all bikes heavy GSs. You have probably seen videos and what the bikes are able to do. I have ridden a R1250GS Adventure in some rough roads and very impressed by it. I think for most the price of the bike (and the weight) make it less tempting to ride off road. If you have the money, buy it and ride together with some friends in case you get stuck in the mud.
@thetubelesschannel Hi, we will need to agree to disagree. I could go on for hours, but I will give you 3 reasons why I disagree. 1) Take a 7 series or any top German luxury brand flag ship. They are always the technology show case vehicles. Look how fast a 7 series deprecates relative to a 1 Series. The reason being, people know if an old hi tech car breaks, it will probably break the bank. 2) Look at any old high end car that has adjustable air suspension and see how notorious they are for failing and the high cost to repair. 3) Look at the video attached of a GS like I owned, which was very electronically basic compared to a 1300. You will see that the bike was considered a write off. No mechanical issues, just the price to replace the electronic ignition exceeded the value of the bike. See Bike World video from 2 weeks ago. ua-cam.com/video/Zoa4L2P06mE/v-deo.htmlsi=hVdcDAV4enrZiJdP

Having ridden the length of Africa almost 20 years ago on a Transalp I can safely say the new GS would be too heavy, too big and FAR too complicated for a trans Africa or RTW. Great for a European tour but any bike could do that. More a bike for the image conscious with too much money.
Never heard of the Pan America? It was one of the first, if not the first with ARH. I think also front and back and that works perfectly. Stay somewhat objective
Old man’s bike. They should make trike version, as target buyers getting older and older it would help to folks with hip prosthesis, hernias, overweight, etc.
