Nice video mate! I'm the guy with frostbite who you saw warming my hands in a bowl of water at Yentna Roadhouse. I did get a flight out of there, and now all my fingers seem pretty much recovered. I'm glad you made it and had a great time out on the trail. 👍
Super love this video! Thank you for sharing. I've been back and forth on whether I'd enjoy ITI. This has me thinking so! Your positivity is amazing! Really appreciate the extra effort you undertook to document it! Peace!
not sure how these old comments slipped through the cracks... but yes, put ITI on the list! So much amazing :) Thanks for your kind words, too - ride on!
Really, really cool! congrats on finishing! And such a good video. Your best one yet. I hope you do a video on your gear, what worked well and what didn't. So interesting how some people get frost bite and you are still out there trucking along.
been going back and finding comments that slipped through the cracks... sorry I never got back to ya... thanks for the kind words, and I'm actually putting together a "what worked and didn't" video now... should be out in a few weeks - ride on!!
Outstanding performance. My experience of something in 5 hours was to do 35km in the summer to North Cape of Norway. The wind was storm force 8 to 10 so 90+Kph ( 120kph maybe gusts ) and to breath you had to lie down o top of your bike in a ditch.
Great video and story on your experience Alan, your content gets me so stoked to just get out and appreciate riding. Hope to see you at the Arrowhead one of these years brotha!
Awesome recap of your ITI adventure. I was at the start and had a few buddies race with you in the pack and admire the hell out of every one of you. Congratulations on your finish!
Bravo, your methodical preparation surly help out but your big heart is what carried you through. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's very generous of you.
So glad you had such a great trip! Thanks for all the filming you did while riding, even in frigid temperatures. Was it hard to keep your cameras working? And excited that some of my friends got to meet you! Can't wait to see what is up next for you.
Alan my man so fun to travel with you and relive our shared adventure in your videos. Thanks for taking the time to document your ride and share it with us all. Pedal POWder and Bless UP!
Wow!! Congratulations!! You rock, dude! Amazing and inspiring. Time to do some epic stuff!! After all the great info you have passed on to us viewers it is just so cool that you were able to kick it across the Iditarod!!
Duuuudddde, incredible journey…..this visual ride gave me happiness I was smiling the whole time watching and was so peaceful. You look like you where in a new natural high. The ice beard was classic! Glad to able to catch this masterpiece on film.
What an amazing life memory you experienced! Congratulations on fulfilling a dream of yours! And as always, thank you for sharing it with us followers. You're an inspiration, Alan!
I don't think I've seen such a good in depth vlog of this race ever! It's not surprising considering the difficulty of both the race and filming it. I would say I now have a better impression of how difficult the race actually is, which is good because I still want to do it! Breathing hard in the -20s is rough on the lungs, what gear and strategies did you use to deal with that and how did you fare?
Thanks for the kind words, and glad you want to do it!!! It helps to humidify your breath when it’s very cold… like through a cold avenger, neck gaiter, etc - ride on!
Awesome! Well done. I was tracking and cheering for you from home. What were you wearing when it was -25? When you were hike a biking, was there too much fresh snow to ride, too steep or what? Did you have to deal with any river overflow?
when hiking it was usually because of fresh / soft snow that wasn’t packed down by snow machines - when it was cold, just normal layers - synthetic puffy vest and or jacket on top of main riding jacket… maybe a light wind layer… ride on and thanks for watching!!
I'd love to do this, but the puddle jumper part kills that idea.. I lived in Fairbanks for 4 years in the late 90's and wanted to experience an Iditarod race of any kind.. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
What an awesome achievement and the video was outstanding. Scenery galore. Glad it all worked out. What's your next adventure? Thanks for the video and take care, Al
Thank you for sharing this awesome adventure! I could not stop smiling at how amazing that must feel to be in the moment. I will never get a chance to experience this as I have a blood circulation issue that the cold would be to much. However your video is like I was there with you. 😊
Thanks for taking the time to record this while on the move. Winter filming is tricky in the cold. Congrats on getting out there and making this happen for yourself !
Hearty Congratulations on the finish Alan! It was a delight to see you before you embarked on this grand adventure and Alaska like always, never disappoints despite the variable weather it dishes out. Lady Aurora offered us all a special showing and I'm grateful that you all were able to enjoy it to some extent or the other. Thank you for the mention, it was fun to meet you and I'm glad I played a smidgen of part in your ITI experience. May the rest of 2023 offer you and yours many for memorable moments! 3 Cheers for the bike community.
Well done! It's amazing how warm 10 degree (F) and no wind can feel so warm after enduring some of that extreme cold you dealt with early on. Your prep was spot on.
Awesome video! Congratulations. Also, just a question on the lodges. I see a few shots show dogs in them. Are there dogs in all the lodges along the way? Dogs make me anaphylactic so would need to figure out another way to warm up/rest/eat.
From what I remember, none of the “official” checkpoints had any dogs in or around… except maybe Bentalit had a house dog that belonged to the owner? Your best bet is to double check with the ITI race director re: checkpoints… and you can call/email the other establishments along the route (Skwentna, yentna, etc) and ask them to be sure… Hope that helps!
I'm in Anchorage if you ever need anything, recently found the channel, I love it!! I really appreciate all of the fat bike specific content you provide. I just bought a fatbike and upgraded my mountain bike, and my family has been following suit. Happy trails!
Alan, I just stumbled on this video. I love to Bikepack and have never seen this ride. What an experience. Breath taking views. Super thanks for videoing all that. I know it was hard while your out there to do what you did. Super proud of you guys.
I watched your dot for most of the race. I had other friends riding also. Are you going to do a gear breakdown? You didn’t go into detail on the frost bite issues, but it affected many and I’d love to hear more about your layering strategy and your backup plan for more extreme conditions.
Sorry for late response- I left on a family vacation right after and then working on location… I will be posting a full gear / bike check video, but I’m holding it til Winter when I think more people will watch it… hard to get hyped up for fat biking til the snow flies- ride on!!!
Emergency evacuation on the ITI is handled through the race organizer- but I have a spot tracker with insurance in case I have to hit the SOS and get airlifted… pretty cheap and worth the peace of mind IMO - ride on!!
Alan, this was an incredible recap and an insanely impressive undertaking. The fact that you gathered so many shots in those temperatures blows my mind. You're a top-shelf bikepacking story teller and we're here for the long run.
Trying to understand the condation of the trail .. do they clear it or this is a local trail people use so it compacted and is the lodges open all year round
The route itself only exists when there is snow. It goes over marshes, rivers, and lakes. It’s used by folks to travel between small, interior towns via snow machine… that’s how it stays “packed” for the most part- yes, most businesses stay open - hope that helps!
Nice video mate! I'm the guy with frostbite who you saw warming my hands in a bowl of water at Yentna Roadhouse. I did get a flight out of there, and now all my fingers seem pretty much recovered.
I'm glad you made it and had a great time out on the trail. 👍

Amazing coverage of this event!! I want to ride this now!! What kind of tire pressure were you running? Tubeless?
Yes tubeless - mostly in 3-7psi range depending on conditions- ride on!

Great video. What is the sun/nose patch you have on around 4:59 in the video? Where do you get them?
That’s frost tape - you can do a google search and buy online - thanks for watching :)
Man that was an epic! Fantastic Alan. Now to start prepping haha.

Do you carry emergency evacuation airlift personal insurance on your trips???
If so, do you have any recommendations?
Emergency evacuation on the ITI is handled through the race organizer- but I have a spot tracker with insurance in case I have to hit the SOS and get airlifted… pretty cheap and worth the peace of mind IMO - ride on!!
What an event! It really looks like a very special experience and I would love to do something similar to this. Thanks for sharing, Alan!
Thanks for watching!! Put it on your bucket list!! 🤙🤙
