This was my battalion, 5 Scots the Argyll and sutherland highlanders. Ross kemp is a legend he has massive support for our/all troops. This was 2008 tour.
Major Nick Calder is a legend and highly respected from the junior soldier through all ranks. Some good footage of wee Pollock ginger Hammy and Andy (medic) all great guys.

On a serious note, not sure if you served but when you are given a task by the hierarchy then it needs to be done to the best of your ability because if not your not only putting your safety/life at risk but the men/woman who choose to stand with you. Good banter and moral when you are at your lowest you can always rely on your battle buddie to come out with some sarcastic funny comment that just gets you in the gut and gets you going again.

This footage, from start to finish, perfectly shows the understated but totally professional standards of the British military. It is made all the more authentic by Ross Kemp and his cameraman’s incredible footage from the very front of a proper fire fight. The steely leadership from the Boss and the reactions of the troops to one of their buddies being hit was top class. The reaction of the wounded soldier to being hit was unflappable professionalism at its best. No whooping and hollering, no high fives, just “ it is what it is “, let’s crack on !
Then to cap it off , a combat medic who is clearly at the top of his game. He is the epitome of what it is to be a British soldier. Professional, adept and totally in charge of his skill set. You sir , are a credit to your unit, your country but especially to your oppos. Respect from a former Royal Marine 🙏🏻

Hi Theo. Ross Kemp is actually "a big girl's blouse" (his words, not mine) as he came to note as an actor playing an ex-army type in a London-based soap opera called EastEnders, and then the lead in Ultimate Force, a drama about the SAS, sometimes called Ultimate Farce by critics! I think he's done his best work in his documentary series, where he's basically a journalist. It trades on his screen rep as a 'tough guy' but it's actually the most honest thing he's done because journalists are very vulnerable in these situations.
I think this video was shot in 2008 with Delta Company, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (5 SCOTS), the 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, which sounds like a horrible amalgamation has occurred and was obviously a seperate Regiment back in the day.

just to give a bit of context, this clip started well into the original programme, he was originally embedded with the unit during training so by this point has built quite a rapport with certain soldiers, particularly the one that got shot. the soldiers repeatedly give ross crap throughout the programme for the low accuracy score he got in firearms training, in fairness he didn't get the same level of instruction first but was told "the enemy may not respect a press pass so you better know how to shoot"

Yeah. Common sight to see interpreters carrying a taliban captured radio. Pretty useful because it can give heads up on an ambush or an IED down the road. I know that in some firefights, coalition forces used radios to roughly calculate enemy casualties in the middle of combat, like, for example, when a Taliban fighter ambushing a group of NATO soldiers reports one of their team being injured or killed on the radio, etc.
Some of these Taliban fighters are just as dumb as rocks with their radios. Not complaining though, since it’s worked out in favor of our troops lmao

Ross is the example of good journalism. He told the stories that needed telling - he did them in the most honest, brutal but correct ways possible. He didn't censor anything just because.
But most importantly, he's good at getting involved when needed (i.e. making sure the boys below got the medic) and staying out of their way when needed (i.e during the start of the gun fire where he stayed off the roof).

Yeah this was one of the early Herrick Ops. Back on those days, lads used to stow things like bayonets down the front molle attachments on their body armour; even the Coy Cdr has the zip undone and you can see the actual plate in a couple of parts. Commanders used to do this to keep aerial photos/maps down for quick access.
This quickly changed when so many lads had their faces blown off from IED strikes which made everything stowed on molle to become projectiles and blow lads’ faces off 😬.
The later plate carriers were MTP and the front and rear plates were inserted from the bottom to reduce the chance of being blown out in an IED strike.

He first went to Afghanistan with the 1 Royal Anglian Regiment from Essex (his father's old regiment) in the series "Ross Kemp in Afghanistan", in summer 2007.
This footage is from the follow-up series "Ross Kemp: Return to Afghanistan", with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders battalion in 2008.
I always found the first season from 2007 much more intense, just pure gunfire, javelin and air-strikes and it is amazing to watch as Ross and the camera crew adapt to being in a warzone. At first they are very jumpy, keeping heads down during engagements. After a few hours of screen-time they are totally desensitized to the whole situation. This second season contained more of the tactical stuff, such as signals intel and the baiting of the enemy. It showed another side of the fight; less brute hardware and more intel.
    Great video thanks! 👍
