I love FOTS. In terms of campaign it has features that make it the best experiance in entire Total War franchise. Naval bombardments or deploying your army by train to counter naval invasion in some unprotected region are soo satisfying. But in terms of avatar conquest, I think that some upgrades make units extremely overpowered such as elite infantry with increased range and better spotting which makes them an unit without any weakness, especially if you face them as a low level player.
I can tell you every new player had a hard start in Avatar Conquest and thats unfortunate why so many people leave before they experience how fun it really is to fully customize your army. But I can tell you that its not about elite units to win a battle. New players just don't understand all the mechanics and play too passive. Like when you play with experienced players they often bring Tosa Rifleman with 175 range that cost 1820 while a red bear is just 750. As I played S2 for a really long time I can tell you I already won against proplayers just by using red bears mainly. Red Bear spam is insanely powerful and if you know how to play agressive all the range upgrades can get useless fast. But I often see players just watching their lines melt to marines complaining about it later while a well organized push had been the better option instead of letting your army slowly die and causing no casulties on enemies. I agree veterans give some kind of advantage, but its not imposible to win without them ;)
@@trebor797 red bear spam in sieges or in pitch battles are some of the fun tactics I used. Always fun to see them massacre or get massacred. You always get something out of a match.
@@boomstick_jones Yeah true they always do a solid job and as they are cheap you often have the manpower advantage. But I wouldn't spam them in sieges. As attacker you need archers as they are just king. A few amount of guns is still not bad to protect your army against cav or if the enemies really have troops on the walls Red Bears can get good kills. Also for the late game guns are very good to take the mid. But if the enemies have good melee units you have no chance with mainly Bears to take the castle, as they can hide away from gunfire too well. As defender a larger amount of Red bears is ok, but I would advise to take also some White Tigers. They are cheap and a perfect meashield unit. Red Bears are too expensive to be a meatshield and rather be used to protect the inner layers. But the tactic you choose depends also on your ally and opponents and their skill. Depending on this you can choose tactics that are way more fun than just red Bear spam. For example there is a fun tactic as defender on a map where you can place ur gatling outside the walls and they can shoot immediatly and anything trying to kill them get massacred by protecting gun units and the gatling itself. Its just so satisfying seeing Gatlings using all their ammo and getting over 300+ kills. In my time playing Shogun 2 I played and invented so many different tactics that are fun that Red Bear spam is kinda boring already and at least in pitch battles one of the tactics you use to win
@@trebor797 since I usually fight sieges in single stage fortresses (as in one layer of defense), I usually sally out two units of RBs for bait while the others shoot at the pursuers, which surprisingly works, as a defender. As an attacker, however, I usually just climb the walls and charge for it with a single unit to distract while the bulk of my forces burn down gates and cap towers. I agree that bows would be best in siege situations due to superior range, and having heavy weapons (i.e. cannons and the gatling) would do better either as attacker as defender. However, I do find the RBS tactic to be often underestimated when used as a feint, or I am just lucky with the matches I play.
Thank you so much for covering this battle :D It was really intense when I fought in it cause just like you said a single unit breaking already had a huge impact on the balance of power. It was especially close, because uno used a kinda dirty method with that you can let already broken units still fight to the last man. Thats why you saw so many units without banners. It was literally bug using and it caused me huge problems. But those are the best battles, right? The ones where you fight all over the map watching every flank, seeing the battle getting closer and closer, your heartbeat going up to 300, but even though the enemies played dirty, you somehow made it and win with a fraction of your army left :D

It's not normal to see a player advance through the lake in this map, but in the end this battle was very close for the two sides. Trebor carried on his back the other player in this battle and the number of enemy kills is prove it. I would like to see more Empire: Total war replays upload, because recently I don't seen too much of this game on the channel.
I think FOTS infantry combat always missed three things, bayonets, the ability to space line infantry into loose formation, and most importantly you can't engage with rifle infantry from a long enough distance. The Maximum distance you can engage is so within the effective range of the rifles that the battle is basically won by the first person who shoots, usually the less aggressive player. Infantry completely melt each other in seconds. Another thing, I can't stand how when your troops are shot instead of shooting back they start to fill the ranks back in.
that last part i agree with, also with that bayonets especially if i just watched the last samurai. And sharpshooter (basically light inf) can get into loose formation
You have some good points. Actually funny or sad on the other side the line infantery is supposed to have Bayonets, but TW was too lazy(?) to create new animations and skinmodels. Cause the the stupid thing is, you can see them using swords, but looking into the gamefiles you will see thet line infantry actually has an anti cav bonus of 4 unlike other sword inf that has 0. Thats one of the reasons that kinda killed cavalry fun for me. Line infantry can not only melt cav with bullets but on a fight on a longer time your cav even lose cause tha anticav bonus. But there are mods that add bayonets to the game. Actually I think its ok that you cant put line infantry into losse formation and that would imbalance the game alot. I guess the point with range an no loose formation except for lights is probably to maintain an importance for archers. The reason that archers could actually work against a FOS army is beacuse they got higher range and line infantry cant go into loose formation. But I agree it would have been better if line infantery could start shooting on higher range so first salve wouldnt destroy so much. I guess another point here is that CA wasnt able to give bullets an impact range. I once had a battle were troops of mine charge over a hill while getting shot. However some shots missed and the bullets were flying across the battlefield actually killing a soldier of my Mangonel crew which was like 1km away or so. Maybe to avoid that troops in the backside got too many random casulties they made range short so shots barely miss or dont fly so far away at least. But one thing I can tell you is if you play with really good players everyone plays passive and its rather the key to make the enemies come to you by units with more range or a good movement. An straight foward attack is kinda almost suicide and good palyers are aware of it, only if a good chance opens up you see this happen. In this battle there was one for my enemeis as my ally spammed the shit out of expensive elites and had no manpower
DAMN S.W.A.T (purple) is such an amazing player in the shogun 2 community his Veteran royal marines 3:24 are at max level 9 with extended range of 150 (125 being the norm) and i see he's got the suppression ability active which just Max's out its reload skill though decrease accuracy done to 60 bit thats still high for accuracy this unit had to cost well over 2,000 Money
Well tbh your comment put a smile on my face. To start with the marines. Well my marines are lvl. 9 aswell, but is it smart to upgrade them with 9 upgrades? I can answer this with a clear no. Marines are an insane unit, but upgraded to lvl 5. You can add the range upgrade with the 5th upgrade and thats when marines are imo on their best price cost option. A pretty solid and kinda cheap unit with 150 range. Any upgrade after the 5th upgrade makes your unit more expensive while the stats does not really improve. You take Marines for the cheap range, not for superior stats. I guess they are not 2k money but clsoe to it, but is that good? Its actually bad having a super expensive line. One bad move or 1 salve of an opponent line inf is already a huge loss. Then you mentioned supressive fire. Supressive fire adds 20 reload and decrease 20 accuracy. Not only is accuracy the way more worthy stat (80 is alot better than 60), but also every ranged unit in S2 has a realod cap, because of the animation mechanics. There is a minnimum time a unit needs to reload, that you cant go below. Line Infantry has it cap around 80 (!!). So not only his base stats break the cap (another reason why it was stupid to add more relaod upgrades which he did), he effectively weakened his unit by using this skill. He had 0 gain in realod but a tremendous loss in accuracy. So sorry I cant share your enthusiasm for his marines. And now the most important thing. You said he is such an amazing player. Why? Because he got a super expensive unit, because his entire army was literally and elite SPAM? S.W.A.T was the player that almost made me lose. Look at his kills! They don't even compare to the enemies kills conidering that they had such an overwhelming manpower. He was able to kill kinda 50% of 1 enemy army thats usually not enough. S.W.A.T spammed elite and got curshed easy by manpower. You know quality is not everything. Its important to have a good mix and going for units with a good cost effectiveness and not the most expensive almost 2k money marines. Also you could see him wasting some of his arty shots into the lake where it has almost no impact (no explosion). I dont know what make you think he is an amzing players as he done mistakes that gave me a really hard time (I had to help him by sending my own troops to get some manpower up there on the right side). S.W.A.T is not a bad player, he is actually good and above average. But this was a battle of some really good players. Bushido is one of my friends and he is an incredible player. Imo S.W.A.T was actually the worst player in this battle, which does not mean he is bad, but the enemies were stronger players. S.W.A.T had the army of the best quality, but elite spam does not make someone a good player

@@ricky578 As I said, he is not a bad player, he is one of the better players. But I know about the skill of the other players and I would rate them higher than S.W.A.T . In Shogun 2 its not too hard actually to be a good player once you understand the mechanics around Avatar Conquest. I got a friend with who I share all my tactics and knowledge with as he is an incredible player too. When we play together its kinda a safe win. We even won 2v4s and we can play tactics just for fun, with units that are not worth their price, using uncommon strategies and we still win. We are not the kind of toxic players who brag and say to be superior. In fact we helped a lot new players. But we know a lot players in that game and you have no idea what counts for us still as "noob" when we write. 10 star does not make you a good player, I even destroyed players with diamond stars (Diamond 10 is equal to lvl. 70) easy. There are players that seem to be good for most players as they are winning a lot. And this especially shows for FOS players. But once they face a serious army with a player who has high skill he can be destroyed easy. I am sure S.W.A.T is able to beat like 80% of the players in this game, because most of them don't know some basics. Elite can win easy against passive players. But when you face manpower strong agressive palyers you are going to lose

As much as I love gun battles, I find the shogun gun mechanics to be so sloppy. The extremely long lines are so unwieldy not to mention aestheticly horrifying. I like to keep to sword battles and shogun and keep the guns in napoleon or empire. I do wish they'd try another gun period, hell maybe early ww1 or civil war, but I understand if gun lines are too complex for CA to get right.
Video is nice but thumbnail was kinda misleading. I genuinely thought it was modded and that there'd be some action with units from the morning sun mod lol (on the right of it there's a chinese spear unit from the mod).
Everyone can send replays to Apollo. And tbf in other TW games you often see the same names aswell sometimes. But is it really important who sent the replay? I guess its more important that it is a good battle. Apollo also covered other peoples replays in Shogun 2 not just mine. Also keep in mind that Shogun2 does not really have an active MP community anymore and some people might send in the replays the wrong way. Additionally I played this game in MP for like 2k hours and got a collection of 800+ replays where I choose the best of. I also give a quick explanation what happened in the battles. So far I hope my replays have always been pretty good so maybe Apollo rather likes to choose replays of that he knows that they are most likely not clickbait (As some people name their replays like super insanely close and they are not) and you see tactics of an experienced player. Its really not that I have a super close connection to Apollo. I just send him the replays from time to time or remind him about some I sent in the past. And its not that he covered all I sent him yet either
@@trebor797 ikr I have played with u a few times and you really are a good player no doubt, but I too sent him like 5-6 replays on his discord server and also dm him when he asked recently and they were all really good replays with big battles as well also in some replays we too had uno and SWAT with us but the replays never got reviewed

You know for me it was like that some time the same. People sent in not that good replays and I made comments on that videos that got many likes where I said I got better replays. Then he finally noticed me and told me even in his one video to send him the replays again

I guess its more important that it is a good battle. Apollo also covered other peoples replays in Shogun 2 not just mine. Also keep in mind that Shogun2 does not really have an active MP community anymore and some people might send in the replays the wrong way. Additionally I played this game in MP for like 2k hours and got a collection of 800+ replays where I choose the best of. I also give a quick explanation what happened in the battles. So far I hope my replays have always been pretty good so maybe Apollo rather likes to choose replays of that he knows that they are most likely not clickbait (As some people name their replays like super insanely close and they are not) and you see tactics of an experienced player. Its really not that I have a super close connection to Apollo. I just send him the replays from time to time or remind him about some I sent in the past. And its not that he covered all I sent him yet either
@@trebor797 ikr I have played with u a few times and you really are a good player no doubt, but I too sent him like 5-6 replays on his discord server and also dm him when he asked recently and they were all really good replays with big battles as well also in some replays we too had uno and SWAT with us but the replays never got reviewed
@@helly9748 I don't know then. It's good to write him when he is online and not in a game. Look if he just got online or stopped playing a game you chances might be higher too. You know for me it was like that some time the same. People sent in not that good replays and I made comments on that videos that got many likes where I said I got better replays. Then he finally noticed me and told me even in his one video to send him the replays again
