Great tutorial. I cannot express how frustrating this new tool has been on layer masks. I used to heavily use gradients and now i have to switch to a different mode to even do that, and presumably anything "legacy" will go away in a few years. Adobe really screwed up on that. It should behave as pixals on masks.
yes its ruined the way I use this tool. its riidiculous that the company is making their tools less accessible when every young artist I know is using procreate instead precisely because its intuitive.
I totally agree!! Well stated, Michael. I use gradients only for masks and I'm really having a much harder time now. Still, I appreciate as always Julieanne's great tutorial.
I love Photoshop. I love using gradients. This is a terrible revamp of the feature and even classic mode is overly complicated and lacks intuitive use. Just going to use the paint brush tool instead, which is a true shame.
uhg not liking this new gradient tool at all. miss being able to just hold shift on the gradient tool and getting a straight line. Adobe didn't need to change this.
It's opposite of how I use it. Often I just want to fill small selected areas quickly with a little fade -not make a new layer every time.... This new implementation breaks exactly the way I want to use it.
Julieanne, I have an adjustment layer that I have applied a mask to by Command-Clicking the channel that I saved when I created the mask and dragging it to the layer. The mask is half black (top; sky) and half white (bottom; ground) So far, so good. I have selected the Gradient tool and want to drag some low opacity linear gradients into the bottom and lower corners of the white portion of the mask (I want to partially mask these areas). But when I click-and-drag the gradient tool the top, black portion of the mask turns gray! What am I doing wrong? Thank you, Stan
Is this what happens when software engineers have way too much time on their hands? Best in the hands of people weigh more sophisticated than me. As always, Julianne, you did a wonderful job of demonstrating all of the changes. And reassuring me to stay with the gradient in Lightroom.
I don't understand how the hell this works. If I make a photo filter and go to apply a gradient to it's layer mask, it just doesn't do anything. The color stop controls show up, but it doesn't effect my mask.@@jvat
this is screwing my work so much!!!!! I want it bak to how it was before!!! I color comics for a living, I use gradients one on top of the others constantly, I am so SCREWED by this
How do I use the gradient tool in Quick Mask Mode? With this latest version of Photoshop, the Gradient Tool creates a new Gradient Fill Layer rather than affecting the quick mask area. This is basically the only thing I used Gradient Tool for - to tweak selection in Quick Mask Mode.
The way Adobe implemented this is so terrible. When using artboards, the gradients shift around every time a new artboard is made more moved around. This completely destroys the existing artboards.
the new update sure adds more flexibility to edit the gradient right on the canvas, but it's not as intuitive, i don't like the idea of invisible buttons, where you have to hover the mouse above or below to show a tiny icon on the cursor indicating you can do something. interfaces need to be clear and directly show the user what he can do
Mine doesn't seem to function properly at all, I wondering is it's something to do with the message I get when I open Photoshop nagging me to update my OS?
Great in-depth details as always - Thank you! I would love to see the PS Gradient Tool gain the perpendicular reference lines at the start and end points - similar to Lightroom, for better alignment when initially dragging out at odd angles.

What a shit they did, unbelievable! We can't drag multiple strokes at a single mask anyone.

Yep. This is NOT an improvement.

How do you use the gradient tool in a mask?

@@jvat Thanks. Missed it. Shame that this feature is not fully implemented for masks. I hope that is on the to do list!!! .
I am sure it is. Can't imagine a reason to leave it like it is now.

This feature is terrible in the new update. So bad. Why do they have to change something every time? If it ain't broken...
I'd pay good money to get Photoshop CS4 as a working software on Win 10. Not this bloated trash that I feel annoyed with everytime I try to use it.
this is screwing my work so much!!!!! I want it bak to how it was before!!! I color comics for a living, I use gradients one on top of the others constantly, I am so SCREWED by this
...so 'Classic Gradient' for me, thanks!
The line disappears. It doesn't stay on the screen. I drag out a gradient, but the line goes away. Any suggestions?

Select the Gradient Tool, then on the options click Classic Gradient to continue to use it in the usual manner

This gradient tool is honestly the least intuitive thing ever. The classic tool was flawless
horrible improvement, I used to use a lot off different gradients on one mask, now that is impossible, going back to PS 21, thanks adobe!
which we had back and forth option.
Have worked with this program for 15 years.... Why? This is horrible.
The new gradient tool is utter crap. Thanks, Adobe.

Yess!! So happy there is a preview! Tired of dragging and guessing!
Thank you! :)
