All 3 received relatively minor wounds, considering a 5lb piece of shrapnel just missed them. The SSG(dark kevlar) ducked right before the big piece flew over his head, otherwise it would have killed him, he was wounded from spalling of the walls around him. Video by Company 1SG. The 5lb piece landed on the balcony to his right. He kept it on his desk. Stay safe out there.

Civilians on Facebook were freaking out some were saying evacuate others were saying it’s fine we are far away enough not to be hurt and nobody in the post leadership put out any information or any orders. It blew my mind so I left a comment saying I wish someone in our leadership should show some competence and update us on the situation so our wife’s and children know they are safe and I got in trouble lmao. My leadership called me into their office immediately and told me that the post commander was mad at me. That little bitch still never put out any guidance until after the bomb was removed. He had nothing to worry about tho his family lived many miles away.

I remember reading a story (I think in a soldier’s autobiography of his time in Afghanistan, but I could be wrong) of another soldier who was killed by a pin-sized piece of shrapnel to the back of the head, just under his helmet. Out of nowhere the soldier just fell over dead, apparently the shrapnel was from an explosion so far away that no one even considered that it could have affected them.
I read about a damaged US carrier in WW2 exploding. Alot of sailors were watching from a nearby carrier deck. The Doctor wrote there were arms and legs strewn across the deck- can't remember which carrier it was

Theyre rated as fire symbol 1, so if you had to evacuate due to one being around fire, you're evacuating 4000 feet, or a little more than 3/4 of a mile away. They can send shrapnel pretty far.
When I was in the Air Force. I worked as a munitions loader and was actually part of the team who went to Florida to do the test loads on the A-10 for JDAMs.
There’s a reason it’s seen as cool to not look at explosions and not just walking away from them. Frag patters may be pretty wide but your eyes are the most vulnerable thing you have it’s usually not worth the risk.

As former USAF EOD... ya you want to be at minimum... MINIMUM of 3/4 of a mile away from a 2000lbs MK-84 GP bomb body(the bomb portion of the GBU-31) going off. And even then you'll want to be on the look out for debris thrown your way.

Depending on the size minimum 200m cordon, they cover them in sand bags to minimise splash zone.
